It's the type of confusing that builds curiosity rather than making you feel completely lost
maulcun23 May 2024
I just watched the first two episodes and I am already hooked. Imagine waking up one day and the world as you know it has changed.

Beautifully constructed. There is a mixture of suspense, drama, and thrill. It's the type of confusing that builds curiosity rather than making you feel completely lost.

I like the question the show asks... could one choice really make your life so very different? If you ever had a thought like that, you'll enjoy this. I think that's why I connected to the story so much.

This show is one of the best sci-fi shows out there right now. I can't wait to see where it goes.

A Very Compelling Twist On An Old Concept
TMAuthor238 May 2024
There are enough episodes out to reveal this is definitely worth watching. Good actors, good direction, decent production values and a legit story with compelling things at risk.

It starts slow, which represents typical Apple TV filler or padding in a story that might be better served as a movie. This is frequently the case when a series is based on a single book.

But... Production values are good. The two leads, Edgerton and Connelly, are both strong actors. There have been other series (possibly ripping off the book on which this is based) that have used this premise and not done well. But we note know that we care about Jason, Daniela and Amanda. We care about Jason2 as well, but for a very different reason.

Alice Braga, as Amanda, is a capable actress although not on the same level as the two leads. Her role increases in episode three. And her character's impact on the mutating emotional relationships is fascinating. Jimi Simmons, still looking like a Christian Slater cousin or clone, is fine as well as Ryan, Jason's (Edgerton) best friend.

In episode one, as is the case in most series like this, it rips along pretty well. It's the later episodes where repetitive exposition bogs things down a bit. This kind of "story bloat" can be a problem. The scripting, acting and intriguing plot may reveal a very good series though, so I'll reserve judgment. By the sixth episode we have a definitive plot shaping up, with some emotional and moral dilemmas causing some intriguing tension. And then our own investment in the characters starts to twist. Are we rooting for the same things we were way back in episode one? Maybe not.

Other reviewers want to take issue with the quantum theory (apparently all the rage in sci-fi, Marvel and Disney nowadays) angle and the Schrodinger's Cat reference in the beginning. Don't bother with any of that. It's mainly foreshadowing and merely puts forth the key premise: two things can be true at the same time; and if you could, would you change a key event in your past. The tech-speak dialogue about super position in quantum theory only serves to make us look too closely at the premise's central concept, which, while important, doesn't need to be beat into us by the time we get to episode seven.

It's a flipped plot line of the old time travel trope of an older version of a person traveling back in time to change events in his or her past. Except here, in Dark Matter, it's much more complicated, and morally conflicted than that.

Time, and the final episodes we haven't seen yet, will tell.

I'll keep watching.

Now, that's my review of this series. If you read further you'll get my review of other reviewers of this series...

There are a handful of one star reviews (and more ratings without reviews). One of them starts out: " I only watched the first episode, but this series is trash." Let me say this: if you only watch one episode, don't rate the SERIES. The other one star and two star reviews are: poorly written, have lots of misspellings, have many grammatical errors, and display a deep lack of self awareness and understanding. This is what this site has been reduced to. Uneducated, preadolescents who have access to a keyboard but can't string a sentence together. Reading the puerile ramblings of idiots who feel capable of reviewing anything is exhausting. Where's the "block" or "delete" button? In the immortal words of Anthony Mackie...go get your juice box and sit in the corner. The grownups are talking here.

Great Adaptation by Blake Crouch
sales-681-5975179 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I never review something before a season is up, but the negative reviews were almost laughably unreasonable; and they failed to acknowledge that this is an adaptation of Blake Crouch's book, by Blake Crouch himself. So far, it is almost pitch perfect to the book. I have frankly never seen an adaptation so true to the source.

If you loved the book like I did, then so far so good. Solid acting from the leads. Edgerton and Connelly are superb. Simpson is great.

There's a real status-shift that each character has compared to their other-dimensional ones, and the show really brings this to life in a way I couldn't quite conjure in the book. Crouch is not terribly descriptive with his character development in the book, but he does a great job differentiating everyone on screen.

For example, Jason the burnt out professor vs. Jason the famous scientist; Daniela the mom and gallery owner vs. Daniela the famous artist; Ryan the prestigious up-and-coming scientist vs. Ryan the overweight, insecure underling.

Read the book, it's great. And so far the show is, too.

Will update when S1 wraps.

Pretty good show, one of the best I've seen in awhile.
ed-503-46518329 May 2024
The show's theme is reminiscent of the TV series Sliders, but with superior production values and a slightly more mature tone. After watching the first five episodes, I'm genuinely intrigued by the direction it's taking. I eagerly await episode 6, as there have been only a handful of series in recent years that truly piqued my interest.

Every aspect of the show is commendable. The talented actors portray captivating characters, the script is well-crafted, and the production quality, set design, and cinematography are top-notch. In my opinion, this is AppleTV's finest work yet-they've ticked all the right boxes. I highly recommend giving it a watch, and I sincerely hope it continues to impress.

Only slow to start
tobydaway9 May 2024
Considering how close the first two episodes have stuck to the book, those of us who've read the book know what's coming and that should be enough to silence the haters. I'm personally excited to see the final act played out on screen.

And yes, the Dark Matter book came out over a year before the show, Counterpart.

For those looking for solid science, I would a) wager that they themselves don't know what the science actually should be and b) consider this is fun fiction. Blake Crouch is certainly closer to Dean Koontz than Stephen Hawkings. Just enjoy the fun and let's hope they stay true to the book in the final act because it's gonna be crazy.

Do not watch the trailer....
patyttafg10 May 2024
I've just finished watching the first two episodes, so my review is based on that alone. Without having read the books or any similar material, I approached the TV show with a fresh perspective (although it could have been even fresher if the trailer hadn't spoiled some aspects for me). I only watch 30 sec of the trailer, and I really regret it; nowadays, trailers tend to summarize the entire story rather than just giving hints and teasing, which diminishes the excitement of watching the actual show or movie.

That being said, the first episode had a rather slow pace, and as someone who knew what was going to happen, it started to feel a bit boring. Despite the attempt to create a sense of mystery, the trailer spoiled the experience of discovering things along with the characters.

The second episode improved upon the pace, although it still remained slow. However, it reached a satisfying point that gives hope for improvement in future episodes. I appreciate the main characters and the actors portraying them, particularly Jennifer Connelly; there's a lot of potential there. I just hope the show picks up the pace a bit.

I've been craving a good sci-fi show for a while, and this one might just be it. It certainly has great potential."

Great entertainment
avmor15 May 2024
Apple's shows can be hit or miss but this has hit the sci fi sweet spot with a really great plot. Would recommend this to all sci fi lovers and although the first episode is a bit slow the show appears to slowly crank up the heat and is getting better and better. This may be a show worth waiting for all episodes to come out and binging on to appreciate the crecendo a bit better. Great acting from cast and little to be missed from a directing point of view as transitions are smooth and the plot can easily be followed. Although I have not read the book the show can be appreciated as an adaptation really well.

Why are the smart people dumb?
mtfhvpzt4 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Are they just going to keep making the most dumb decisions all season? I hate when a show has so much good potential and they have their characters just continue to do stupid stuff. Last episode she ran out the box into the snow after already knowing how random and dangerous the worlds can be. And in this episode with him knowing as well he goes into a world clearly not his and puts them at risk again knowing the Danielle their isn't his and risk dying. I hate when shows make it seem like stuff like this is the norm to just be dumb. They're the most smartest people and just constantly doing dumb stuff they know not to do.

Honestly if this is going on next season I'm out and a lot watchers should be too. Can't have people believe you can constantly do stupid stuff and we are supposed to just forget about it.

Not slow at all. Don't listen to the reviews.
johndstock12 May 2024
So far the majority of the reviews call this a "slow start", but it's couldn't be further from the truth. The show has great character development and the pace feels right. The "mystery" portion of the show doesn't leave you feeling frustrated, as subtle hints are dropped at just the right interval.

My only criticism is the dialogue for Jason #1 could have been given a little more thought to. There are a few points where he completely forgets to mention something or someone in his recent experience, leading to a slightly confusing interaction with another character. Given the circumstances he's in, this is easily forgivable as he's experiencing something so profound.

Reasonable approach to fictionalized work on quantum world
rander-881239 May 2024
I think that for what it is, is pretty good. While I'd like to see more science in shows like this, to give the audience a grounding into what the multi-verse is, sans nancy-boy superheroes. In this case, the concept is dealt with in a superficial way (to ep. 3) but hopefully it clarifies as we go on. As for the people... It rarely ceases to amaze. Why is it things play out in these type of TV shows as they never would in real-life? I'm not talking about the scifi concept, that's usually very basically dealt with, sometimes it's interesting, but the actions of humans in these things rarely if ever ring true. Ask yourself, would YOU behave the way people did here? A true scientist would more than anything be fascinated by what had transpired, they would be elated that something had happened. Instead, the reactions are fear, overwrought emotion, it just does not ring true. Do you fly off the handle at the least confusing conflict? Even in a traumatic situation you would probably have the presence of MIND to ask people to explain before you went haywire. But supposed IQ's of the protagonists aside, they act like lab-rats with just as little intelligence. Dialog makes little sense, doesn't lead anywhere as quickly as it could, just facilitates dragging out and laying the groundwork for the implausible situations we always see. At the very beginning, rather than ask the guy questions about his experience, they start peppering a clearly disoriented person with questions! They should have let HIM ask the questions and patiently answered them and explained what was done. If they are going to tackle some of the concepts in quantum mechanics, they need to stop catering solely to the mouth-breathers in the audience.

Multiverse for Dummies
stevelunamotion18 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not going to recap the premise or characters, plenty of other reviews have stated as such. Nor am I going to complain about the pace-I've plenty of patience if the potential seems worth playing out.

My main comment is that for a physics professor, the protagonist is so slow on the draw that it makes you wonder how he ever attained a degree. It's SO bloody obvious what's going on here that we feel forced to endure being trapped with an allegedly brilliant person who acts like he's forgotten everything he's been trying to teach first year students. The big reveal (he's kidnapped and forced to swap places with one of his alternate selves) should've happened in the first 15 minutes of episode one, and he should've been asking pertinent questions a moment later.

Anyone who's watched Quantum Leap or Sliders will instantly know what's going on, plot-wise. The fact that good actors have to act stupidly just makes Dark Matter all the more tedious. It's well shot and edited, but production values ain't everything. If not for my wife's insistence that it will "get a lot better" (she loved the book) I'd have given up by episode three. Personally my taste in science fiction is a lot more esoteric, but nonsense like DM and Silo that seem to be drawing bigger audiences than truly great material... like The Expanse.

Not a rip off of Constellation
JWR429 May 2024
If you don't like Dark Matter, that is of course, your opinion. But to call it a copy cat of Constellation is wrong.

The book "Dark Matter" by Blake Crouch came out in 2016 (it was great!) and as far as I can tell by searching online, Constellation was written specifically as a tv show.

As flr the storyline being slow, it gets better and has to set everything up (per many good series). At least watch some more episodes before completely giving up.

Finally, the complaints about the science/physical being wrong get so tiresome. This is supposed to be fun, entertaining, etc.

Someone always has to show off their knowledge by pointing out everything wrong in a sci-fi movie/series. It's even more than just sci-fi.

Well my review turned into a rant, but I've enjoyed this so far, and if they stay even vaguely close to the book, it gets better and better. Or not, depending how much you want to tell everyone how this or that is not possible.

The path never taken .... What if every decision you take , every thought that ever popped into your mind , every wish you had , every path you thought of in your mind opened a whole version of reality with a version of you experiencing it fully .

Imagine how many versions of you out there that you know nothing about .

It's a Mind-blowing Sci-Fi thriller which will keep you alert throughout the whole show .

Yet it's still in E4 .. midway to go till the end of it.

The Cinematography is spectacular.

The whole cast is excellent , Dark Matter will make question the reality of your existence.

I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did .

I might start reading about quantum physics after I finish this show ... They got me interested.

Haven't read the book but great so far
critic-97-4176578 May 2024
While I haven't read the book, I will say that the first two episodes were very well done. It's also nice to know that the author of the book adapted the script, So it is authentic to his vision.

Joel Egerton and Jennifer Connelly's chemistry is great so far. At this point, there are a few different directions it can go (considering haven't read the book) I am very intrigued and want to know how the story unfolds.

As for the other reviewer saying this series is HEAVILY inspired by a different series, clearly he doesn't know that this is based on a book. It would be really nice if people knew what they were talking about before writing reviews. LOL!

Can't wait for more
randallstralen8 May 2024
I mean... based off the advertising I knew this show was going to be decent but wow. I haven't had a first episode knock my socks off like that in a long time.

Beautifully constructed. It's the type of confusing that builds curiosity rather than making you feel completely lost.

This episode starts with a slow burn and ends with a wildfire. I'm absolutely hooked just off one episode. I'm positive this will be wildly popular.

What an exciting plot twist as well. The audience is given hints before the characters which makes things a little more fun. There is still so much to learn and things to figure out but based off the first episode it's clear all the information will be laid out very well.

EPIC first episode of television.

Fighting my fanboy tendencies
rotten-potatoes23 May 2024
I have read the book several times. I am at a lost writing this because I do not know how to critic the series. I am totally conflicted.

As a series, it's boring. I am on episode 2 and bored out of my mind. I think the only reason I will persist in watching is based on my appreciation of the intellectual property. However, I love edgerton's conviction that he displays while dealing with this heavy existential crisis. Lastly, as a series and fan of the book, I hate hate hate the back and forth between the two characters!!

As a fan of the book, my critique is not much different. It's slow. What was covered in episode one of the series took what, a chapter or two in the book. However, in the book it was much more touching, and engaging than the first episode. I think this series is a travesty so far. And did I mention that I hate the back and forth between the characters.

Edit: I am finishing up episode 4. Gotten better, veering off the source material quite a bit actually. Still a lame series overall thus far, but if they could do something about the boring aspect, and more about the peril that edgerton is in, that'd help. Oh and why a series? Why not a mini series? To string this story along for multiple seasons is asinine.

Captivating!
iempoweryou29 May 2024
I'm a big fan of Dark Matter. It had my attention From the get-go

My opinion, the storytelling is excellent. It's difficult to find a movie or TV. Show the deals with sci-fi or multiple dimensions that isn't messy or poorly shot.

I find the storyline for dark matter, very intriguing, and I enjoy the pace at which they reveal twists in the story.

The actors are fantastic. Jennifer Connelly and Joel Edgerton are sways superb.

The cinematography is also great. The vision the Director took makes us feel more like inception or an updated version of X-Files.

My only complaints are: 1. There are several times throughout the series, but the filming is too dark. This is a problem. I'm finding with most TV shows nowadays. I'm not sure if the excuses they are trying to be realistic, but we're watching a television show... I want to be able to see what I'm watching and understand the storyline. Stop shooting scenes in complete darkness. It takes me out of the story. It's painful to watch.

2. My only complaint is that I have to wait a whole week to watch the next episode lol

Overall this is my favorite new show to watch and I psych thriller or sci-fi fans will definitely enjoy the quality of detail put into the show.

Difficult Watch
martcolgoo30 May 2024
Fabulous to watch with plenty of quirky sci-fil tropes and ideas. Some of the references to real life science were interesting and promoted further enquiries from me only to leave me feeling a bit cheated! Because there is so much flitting between alternative realities and individual stories, including "flash backs," it was tough at times to follow.

Despite my reservations, I really enjoyed this. The production and casting were both top-notch and the acting was great. It is well cast and well acted so on that front, I found it satisfying.

Despite my quite positive review I still enjoyed It. Great job!

A must watch Sci-fi Drama
rishabhgupta-392846 June 2024
The concept of multiverse and infinite timelines is not unknown to us as it has been explored in many other films and tv-series but Dark Matter does it in a way that's really intriguing by using it to create an emotional dramatical narrative.

This show is beautifully made with jaw-dropping visuals and top-notch acting. The story really goes wild with all the possibilities that keeps you engaged and connected with its world and characters.

Although I would say the dialogues could be better and story could be better-paced, the show still provides enough thrill and entertainment for me to give it an 8 out of 10.

A MUST WATCH for Sci-fi lovers who are just too lazy or don't have time to read Blake Crouch's novel by the same name.

Not bad, but cliche and another multiverse show
namob-4367323 May 2024
I wish they'd done something different with the main premiss. Instead this show too, as so many others, and the entire MCU now, rely on the dumb theory, which is very likely to be untrue, and idea of the multiverse.

This is also much more drama than it is scify. Or at least it tries to be drama. The main actors pull it off, but enough of the side characters do not which make you roll your eyes. Another thing that bothers me is the abysmal sound design with bad irritating background music, horrible intro music, and each fight and run or even driving in a car lack professional sound design.

With those negatives out of the way, this is neither awful or bad. As long as the focus is on the main actors the show is even compelling and sometimes suspenseful. The show also take time setting things up, which I really like.

I guess they could take this show pretty much anywhere, which is the benefit of the multiverse - the multiverse is the lazy writers wet dream, can do anything with it. So perhaps I am too early to judge, but so far I am not too impressed and since the main premiss faulted I am giving this a reluctant 6/10. This is still better than most other TV shows nowadays, but that is more a testament on how bad entertainment has got rather than an endorsement of this show. This is good for what it is, and if you are a believer in the multiverse theory (seek help), then you might think this is a great show.

1% sci-fi, 99% drama
luttapy8 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Another science fiction which is filled with drama about relationship between the characters. The main character gets stuck in an alternate reality. Rest of the drama in about what mistakes he made in this reality, how that shaped the universe, finding all his friends from the other reality and catching up with them etc. The series has a lot of potential but opportunity has been missed. Like in every thriller, there is also an assassin walking around killing every person the main character tells his story too without telling is why. Overall, apart from the main "shell" where the characters have interchanged their realities, it is all about their survival.

Remember that 90s show called Sliders?
Maradey10 June 2024
If you ever saw Sliders or liked Sliders, that TV show from the 90s where this college kid creates a way to travel into infinite universes, then Black Matter is a must-watch. Black Matter takes the core concept of Sliders and elevates it, addressing and improving on many of the aspects where Sliders fell short.

First and foremost, the credibility of Black Matter is much stronger. The show delves deeper into the science behind inter-dimensional travel, providing a more robust and believable framework for the multiverse concept. This adds a layer of sophistication and immersion that Sliders often lacked.

Moreover, the idea of traveling to infinite universes is explored with greater creativity and depth in Black Matter. Each new universe presents unique challenges and narratives that keep the storyline fresh and exciting. The writers have done a commendable job of ensuring that the novelty of new worlds never wears off, offering viewers an endless stream of intriguing and thought-provoking scenarios.

If you're a fan of science fiction, Black Matter is definitely worth a try. It captures the adventurous spirit of Sliders while enhancing it with more complex storytelling and scientific plausibility. You won't regret giving this show a chance, as it delivers an engaging and intellectually stimulating experience that will keep you hooked.

Riveting approach to multidimensionality
sarmijonathan10 June 2024
The show approaches a familiar Sci fi concept in a totally unique and fresh way. What if you could live the life you wanted? A choice you didn't realize would change the trajectory of your life and live that as if you would (or wouldn't) have taken it? The science behind it seems logical and is conceptionally intriguing. It's the kind of movie that has you confused for all the right reasons and makes you want to keep watching to understand.

Alice Braga provides excellent acting in her supporting role. The visuals and the world building are top notch. You find yourself in these alternate realities. At times the science and exploration of why or how things are happening bog down the show watching experience. Nonetheless, I'm excited to see where this show goes.

Pretty engaging show for the most part
zfgcjx4 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched lots of shows like this and they are all boring for the most part, or confusing, or just to much of a headache to bother with all the switching back and forth. Carrying to story arch's is a challenge and this show does a decent job of it. The actors are good enough for the most part as it's TV. I like the concept of different worlds and how they tie it into your unconscious thoughts. This is a very well done concept. Which is executed well.

Now onto the science, anyone complaining about the science apparently didn't understand this is fiction. I can't tell you how many times I hear people talk about how real the science is in a science fiction movie. LOL! If you want real science go watch a science documentary or something.

The science fiction idea in this is based on a concept of super position and as any nerds on here know, super position is a Quantum Mechanics thing with particles and can't happen on a macroscopic level.

But this is fiction, so we can take that concept and apply it as we like. The concept is executed very well as the box disappears and re-appears as it should in super position. Yes, a box that size can appear out of no where because it was in super position. Anyone complaining about this concept that thinks it's dumb is actually not correct as the concept is taken from real QM.

They play around with this concept and idea of how super position would work on a macroscopic level, which is pretty cool as it ties into many worlds theory which is some reality of real theory of QM and super position.

The snapping between worlds and characters is pretty nice touch. Although it is fairly obvious in this show who's who.

I'm not really sure how you make this go on for seasons as the idea and concept will get played out quickly. But willing to see where it goes.

Some minor issues with stuff in the tv show. But 8/10 as it is engaging and overall satisfying enough to watch.
