The Sympathizer (2024)
The novel takes place in the US.
I do not know what book the reviewer who claims the novel is set in France read but The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen takes place in America. That is the whole point of the story. The main character is a communist spy undercover as an aide to a South Vietnamese military commander who escapes to the United States of America at the conclusion of the war in Vietnam. Once in America, the narrator is then is a sleeper agent and a wry observer of American culture. His commentary on American life and capitalism offers a fresh perspective not offer seen and allows us, as readers, to see the war and its aftermath from a different and much needed viewpoint.
Sugar (2024)
Nice modern noir
It seems like some people here should expose themselves to classic noir films and books this series finds its inspiration in. Folks criticizing the internal dialogue, that's a time-honored device of the genre as is, a slow burn pace and flashbacks. Maybe people these days are too accustomed to explosions and car chases to appreciate a little mystery. Read some Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett or watch a Robert Mitchum or Humphrey Bogart movie in the genre. Farrell is definitely well cast and the cinematography is sumptuous. I'm excited to see where this series takes us. We were glued to the screen and can't wait for me.
For All Mankind (2019)
Ignore the naysayers
People knocking this show because of politics are ignoring the fact that politics play a role in everything. It's part of the story as is the astronauts' personal lives.
Hightown (2020)
Are we watching the same show?
Maybe it's because too many of you only watched one episode (if that) but I found even the pilot well done. Maybe it's the fact that the main character is a lesbian. I don't know but this is a good series with good characters, excellent acting and great production values. Give it a try and ignore the haters.
