Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies (1993)
"...The Audience is the Target"
There's no better way to describe GG Allin than in his own words:
"My mind is a machine gun, my body's the bullets, and the audience is the target."
He truly was disgusting, disturbing, and controversial, yet fascinating and entertaining all at the same time. He's brutal and honest and this documentary shows every aspect of it. Definitely intriguing, Hated manages to show the calm -- almost intuitive -- side of GG as he explains he is who he is. He wasn't just music, he was a performer. He'll do what he wants and he doesn't care who tries to stop him. Hated captures the message he's trying to convey; be yourself.
Though some may argue he was simply an obviously violent individual with nothing to offer to society, you just can't doubt that he ultimately was like nothing you've ever seen before and could give one hell of a performance that you could never forget. People strive to be known and end up losing themselves in the process. GG defied that without even trying.
He made his mark, he changed the game, and he was unstoppable. Whether you loved him or hated him, he single-handedly affected and influenced a whole generation by staying true to himself and doing what he loved. Isn't that what being an artist is all about?
Project X (2012)
Typical Comedy Movie for Teens
Project X goes where no teenager had the balls to... or maybe didn't want to. You've got your typical main character who doesn't have many friends, the over-the-top wannabe who thinks he's cool with everyone and has all the hook-ups, and the chubby geek. The three set out to have the most outrageous party in order to gain popularity at school and ultimately make it with hot babes.
Though it sounds like any other teen movie, the main characters weren't as exaggerated as I expected. They were actually probably exactly like kids you would've known in high school (or possibly *were* in high school), and that's what I think made it so funny and easy to relate to. You felt like you were part of the group and living the party. It was like you were right there with them the whole time and just laughing at your own friends.
You're quickly introduced to the main characters and get a sense of their personalities, which are pretty decently consistent throughout the movie. You see Thomas constantly worrying about the house, his sleazy friend at his side assuring him everything will be alright in order to encourage him to enjoy the party, and of course the geek whose only worry is trying to get laid. You experience the party, all the crazy events that ensue, how quickly it can all get out-of-hand, and how everything works out at the end.
What bothered me was the overdone drug-dealer. When he came for his revenge, my friend and I just looked at each other confused, thinking, "Is this even the same movie?" Also, I was distracted with the way the whole movie was shot. I found myself constantly thinking about how that kid was following them around with a camera the whole time. Every scene throughout the entire movie was from someone with a camera. I mean, I understand that we'd all love to record every crazy party we've been to, but why not just shoot the movie normally?
Overall, the movie consisted of an insane party that would be any teen's fantasy, booze, drugs, topless girls, and a tiny bit of romance thrown into the storyline. All around, it would be appealing to any teen.
Chronicle (2012)
Everything was just sort of here-and-there
After seeing the trailer, I was so excited to see this movie. It wasn't long 'til I was sitting in the theatre wondering when it would end. It constantly left me hoping something exciting would happen. It seemed as though it just dragged along, not following any sort of storyline at all.
It starts out with these three boys who happen upon a hole leading to a rock that gives them telekinetic powers. And we never hear about the rock again. This incredible, mysterious, glowing rock that allows for the rest of movie to actually play out wasn't important enough to be mentioned of again.
There was no lead-up from scene to scene and there was nothing that tied the scenes together; suddenly they're flying, then they're in a car, then a talent show, then a party, a car again, flying again, then Andrew decides to rob a gas station. Everything was just sort of here-and-there. And Andrew at the end was WAY too over-the-top. The only parts I actually found the least bit entertaining was when the boys used their powers to mess with people at the store and when Andrew used his powers when he was angry (save for the ending). I honestly think the only thing I appreciated was the concept and the special effects.
