TV Review - While The Men are Away 9/10 (Where are my Gwen Stans at?)
11 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hoooooboyyy. As an Ellie & Abby super fan I've been counting down the days to this and it did not disappoint. I took one star off because I didn't get to see Gwen smooch anyone in the last episode but I appreciate that sometimes seeing a character become more themselves is just as hot (fine fine fine).

But enough about Gwen because this cast is fire. Franky, Cathleen, Robert & Esther.. They are all brilliant. I loved seeing an australian period drama that didn't focus on the well trodden path of the anzacs. And also clearly didn't worry about being factually accurate. It's just so fun and sexy and really moving. The cinematography is unlike any australian show I've seen and the episodes are packed! It doesn't feel like a 30 minute show . I won't say much more because the less you know the more it can surprise you.

8/10 Please someone pickup the lost season 2
2 October 2023
"A League of Their Own," the Amazon TV series inspired by the beloved original film, offers a delightful blend of nostalgia and fresh perspective. Starring Abbie Jacobson and D'Arcy Carden, this adaptation manages to capture the essence of the classic while carving out its own unique identity. The show smartly pays homage to the 1992 film by keeping the spirit of women's baseball alive during World War II. Abbie Jacobson leads the cast with her charismatic performance as a determined and passionate baseball player, offering an earnest portrayal of a character trying to find her place in a male-dominated world. D'Arcy Carden, known for her comedic talents, brings a charming wit and humor to the series, providing a wonderful foil to Jacobson's character. One of the show's standout features is its commitment to diversity and inclusion. While the original film focused primarily on white characters, this adaptation makes a conscious effort to represent a more diverse group of women, showcasing the experiences of players from different backgrounds. It's a welcome and necessary update that adds depth and relevance to the story. The series maintains a strong balance between comedy and drama. The witty banter and camaraderie among the players create moments of genuine laughter, while the challenges they face both on and off the field are treated with the gravity they deserve. The writing beautifully captures the complexities of friendship, ambition, and societal expectations, making it a compelling watch for a wide range of audiences. The production values of "A League of Their Own" are commendable, with period-accurate costumes and set design that transport viewers back to the 1940s. The baseball sequences are well-choreographed and capture the excitement of the sport, even for those who may not be baseball enthusiasts. I'm so devastated to hear about the cancellation of Season 2..Can someone else please pick it up??

Birdeater (2023)

Bird ater- MIFF 2023 Reviews
30 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Birdeater," the Australian horror feature is a film that I enjoyed but left me with mixed feelings. It certainly has its strengths, The film's opening is great and grabs your attention and immerses you in a world of tension and intrigue. The directors establish a captivating atmosphere right from the start and sets high expectations for what's to come. I also loved the score. However, I personally struggled to believe any woman would attend a bucks party with dudes like that - and didn't believe the chemistry of the couple. This aspect made it challenging to fully engage with the unfolding events. But "Birdeater" showcases promise for its directors. It's important to remember that this is their debut feature, and they demonstrate a strong grasp of visual storytelling and mood-building. The potential for future projects is evident, and it will be interesting to see how they refine their storytelling skills in their next endeavors.

If you have a penchant for horror and can look past some plot inconsistencies, "Birdeater" is worth a watch, if only to witness the promising talent behind it.

The Rooster (2023)
9/10
My favorite film from MIFF 2023
29 September 2023
"The Rooster," starring Hugo Weaving and directed by Mark Winter, is a cinematic gem that I was lucky enough to see it at MIFF. Hugo Weaving's performance is exceptional. He effortlessly embodies the complex character, bringing depth and authenticity to every scene. Mark Winter's direction is a revelation. He masterfully navigates the narrative, creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing is spot-on, and Winter's ability to capture the essence of each moment is truly remarkable. His visual style adds an extra layer of depth to the film, making it a visual treat.

The Rooster's screenplay is equally impressive. It weaves a compelling story filled with unexpected twists and turns, making it impossible to predict the outcome. The dialogues are sharp and thought-provoking, adding layers of complexity to the characters and their motivations. The cinematography was also a real standout for me!

Just loved the original book so much
28 September 2023
"Red White and Royal Blue" is a film adaptation of the beloved novel, and as an English film student who adored the source material, I was both excited and apprehensive to see how it would translate to the big screen. While the film has its moments of wit, it ultimately falls short of capturing the magic of the book. The chemistry between the lead actors, while palpable, lacks the depth and authenticity of the characters in the book. Their relationship feels rushed, and the emotional nuances are somewhat lost. The film does shine in its portrayal of diversity and inclusivity. It successfully tackles issues of sexuality and identity with sensitivity and humor. The supporting cast, particularly Alex's sister June and best friend Nora, add depth and humor to the narrative. However, some side characters appear underdeveloped and one-dimensional. Visually, the film is a mixed bag. It felt like a hallmark film at some points while feeling like a more adult film in the dialogue. While the cinematography captures picturesque locations, the production design feels lacking, failing to fully immerse the audience in the world of politics and royalty. The pacing is uneven, with certain moments feeling rushed while others drag on strangely. Also Uma's accent - I don't understand what happened - she's so talented!

As an English film student, I couldn't help but notice some missed opportunities in terms of storytelling and character development. The film prioritizes the romance over the political backdrop, which may disappoint fans of the book like me, who enjoyed the balance between the two.

It is what it is

Why am I obsessed with this trash? Why can't I be better? Anyway, I love this show, I love the cast, I love the houses, I love the sydney skyline and dreaming of traveling there. Just pure escapist fun.

Perfect film for pride, Don't let the low score fool you
10 June 2022
I'd look at Rotten Tomatoes and Amazon reviews for a more accurate representation of this film. So charming, so funny - clearly a low budget but it still won the AACTA award for best Indie film in Australia. I'm a good repressed queer so naturally obsessed with the English teacher.

Beautiful to look at..
3 June 2022
I found this film to be really slow and lack tension. All the performances are great and sure it's beautifully shot.. but otherwise, pretty dull. Maybe one just for cinephiles..

Bluey (2018– )

hands down. the greatest show (Not just for Kids)
27 May 2022
I have to admit, I am childless - and yet Bluey has become my favorite show to put on when I'm just looking for something to watch. It's joyful and clever and funny! The rest of Australian television can learn something from bluey - especially how, even in the most subtlest of ways, it's not afraid to take risks.

The actresses are doing the heavy lifting here
25 May 2022
They were right to make sure the actresses were awarded the Palm D'or as well - Too many straight men making LGBT content. Glad to see there are are more filmmakers being able to tell their own stories now - but they need the same funding and support that was given to these men - and widely, that is not happening. The music and cinematography is excellent - but yeah - can't get past the unnecessary sex scenes.

Nice to have a christmas movie finally!
23 May 2022
This movie has become my comfort christmas movie in the same way "the family stone" is - in that it fills my with anxiety but it feels cosy. Kristen Stewart and Clea Duvall are clearly a great team. Dan Levy is great and his scenes with kristen are the best ones on the film I feel.

So Good to see Australian content finally catching up!
23 May 2022
First day is so sweet and Evie is such a great actress! Considering all ways Australia is currently failing trans youth - it's exciting to see that there are people out there who will back stories like this. Have followed Julie's work since starting from..now, so great to see her be able to take her story telling to a new, bigger, platform!

A near perfect show
23 May 2022
I admit, I did find the first episode slow, and I did need to skip the opening titles every time. But the last episode had me gripping on and desperate for more. I think way it's shot is fascinating and the scripts are incredibly clever. When there's so much TV out there, it's hard to find something that really breaks through, and this did for me!

Good plane film

Warning: Spoilers
I had no idea that James McAvoy was improvising in every scene and didn't know the script until after I'd watched film. Now that I know that, I've given it an extra star as you definitely couldn't tell - his performance was excellent. Clare Foy was great as always.

Pretty Good to be honest
22 May 2022
Had absolutely no idea what this was going to be about - but I really enjoyed it. A very distinct kind of humor - you have to be willing to just go with it. Cinematography and performances are particularly good.

Bawling by the end
22 May 2022
Once I was able to let go of the fact that I couldn't follow what was happening beat by beat and just surrendered to the experience, I had the most wonderful time watching this film. Bizarre and profoundly moving.
