The Greatest Horror Film Ever Made (2020)
Super fun spoof of the horror genre!
I'm the programmer of the Killer Valley Horror Film Festival, so I watch a ton, (A TON!), of horror short films every year. This one immediately jumped out to me as something different, and we accepted it to our 2020 festival.
It starts off with a writer working on the script for his new horror film, and we hear his inner monologue as he writes. It's a fun technique that I haven't seen used in quite this way before. We see the film he's narrating getting made, and it changes course every time he changes his mind on how the film should work. He goes over all the typical tropes of the genre, either trying to avoid them or just fully embracing them. His narration is the highlight of the film.
I won't give it a 10/10, because some of the filmmaking could have been improved. The sound is spotty in places, the film could have been more interestingly shot, and I thought the main killer could have been better realized, but beyond that it's a really fun 10 minute ride for any fan of the horror genre.
Ling (1999)
Incredibly effective horror film.
The film is set up with a simple concept and driven home with masterly filmmaking. It starts with an urban-legend along the lines of "Candyman". If you watch this certain video tape you will receive a phone call immediately afterwards, and you'll be dead in a week. A young girl dies in the opening scene, and our reporter hero is on the story. She of course watches the video. It's up to her and her husband to break this curse.
It's a slow, meandering, psychologically type of scary. (The best kind in my opinion.) There is no gore and very few people die, this is not your typical horror film. Horrendous sounds assault your senses any time something slightly strange happens. The mystery of it all is what is scary. The climax is one of the creepiest moments I've ever seen commited to film.
This is not the type of film that will work for everybody. Some people need to SEE everything, these folk will probably just be bored. But if you've got an imagination that works in overtime, than this is a great film.
It's very hard to find in the States, but seek it out if your a true horror fan. I had to rent a VCD version of it that was just horrible to watch. Very low quality video, with some of the worst engrish subtitles I've ever had the displeasure to read.
