Jack Reynor is reuniting with his “Sing Street” director John Carney for the musical comedy “Power Ballad.”
He will star alongside Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Described as an “uplifting and music-driven story,” the film follows a wedding singer, a rock star — and the song that comes between them. It’s unclear who any of the three actors will portray.
This marks the fourth collaboration between Reynor and Carney following the musical comedies “Sing Street” and “Flora and Son,” as well as the Amazon Prime series “Modern Love.” Reynor is also known for Ari Aster’s horror film “Midsommar,” “Transformers: Age of Extinction” and Amazon’s TV series “The Peripheral.” He’ll be seen next in Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple” adaptation and Amazon’s series “Citadel,” now in its second season.

Following collaborations with music-driven auteur John Carney on last year’s Flora and Son and a pair of other high-profile projects, Jack Reynor has closed a deal to reteam with the Irish filmmaker on his latest effort, the musical comedy Power Ballad, starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
Details as to his role are under wraps, as are specifics of the plot, though the film is billed as an uplifting, music-driven story about a wedding singer, a rock star, and the song that comes between them. Deadline was first to tell you about the project.
Currently in production in Dublin, Power Ballad hails from 30West and Likely Story. Written by Carney and Peter McDonald, the film will be produced by Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story, Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan for Treasure Entertainment, and Carney, all of whom produced Carney’s Flora and Son for Apple TV...

Nobody really makes AIDS dramas anymore, which seems as good a reason as any to make one now. The disease that, forty-odd years ago, decimated a generation of queer people and prompted a prejudice-driven global panic hasn’t gone away — least of all in various developing countries, where it isn’t popularly defined by gender or sexuality, and death rates are still high. But its narrative has changed. For many, advances in antiretroviral and preventative drugs have stripped HIV of its aura of terror, making it something to be lived with, not a ticking clock to the end. With little posturing or overtly groundbreaking intent, French writer-director Gaël Morel unusually and sensitively bridges these eras of HIV/AIDS in his gentle romantic melodrama “To Live, To Die, To Live Again” — beginning in a distinctly Nineties register of mainstream queer cinema, before looking ahead to the 21st century.

Headlines read, “Leos Carax Bring Back Baby Annette to the Croisette,” but this is only half the truth. Yes, the legendary puppet makes a comeback in C’est Pas Moi (English: It’s Not Me), his new film in Cannes’ non-competitive Premiere section. While described as a “self-portrait” (and is in fact more of an essay), it was made in response to a prompt posed by Paris’ Pompidou Centre and was supposed to play in an exhibition. The question, supposedly “where are you at, Leos Carax,” was answered with a 41-minute essay. One of the first things to appear onscreen was a concession: “I don’t know,” a seemingly humble opening for a mid-length film shown at the sold-out Debussy hall at Cannes’ Palais du Festival. But this is Leos Carax and we don’t really need his humbleness, do we?

Updated with ovation for The Second Act: The Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday evening with a joyously female vibe as Meryl Streep received the Honorary Palme d’Or from an emotional Juliette Binoche and Greta Gerwig became the first female U.S. director to serve as jury president across its 77 editions.
The ceremony at the Palais led into the festival’s opening-night film The Second Act from Quentin Dupieux. The French pic, starring Léa Seydoux and Louis Garrel, received a lukewarm 3-minute, 46-second standing ovation from the audience.
Earlier, resplendent in a long sequin gown, Gerwig said she was still coming to terms with the fact that she was presiding over the Cannes jury.
“I hardly know what to say… This is holy to me; art is sacred, film is sacred… I cannot believe that I’m getting the chance to spend 10 days in this house of worship.”

Cannes Film Festival kicked off its 77th edition with opening night film The Second Act, an apt title for the French event that kicked off with clear skies and a festive mood after days of looming strikes, #MeToo rumours and a high tension geopolitical landscape.
General delegate Thierry Fremaux set the tone for the evening by walking casually to the Lumiere theatre with microphone in hand with a simple “good evening everyone - Quentin Dupieux” as the director and his starry cast including Lea Seydoux and Louis Garrel took their seats.

The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is notoriously strict about its black-tie dress code (one man in a blue tuxedo who committed the fashion travesty of wearing white socks was almost turned away). But on Tuesday night, France welcomed a national hero to the opening night of the 77th edition — Messi, the four-legged scene-stealer from last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The canine phenom helped brighten things up even as dark clouds gathered over the Palais des Festivals, site of Cannes’ biggest premieres. Despite the foreboding weather and light drizzle, Lily Gladstone, Greta Gerwig, Omar Sy, Jane Fonda, Juliette Binoche and other stars added some glamour and sparkle to the evening.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is officially underway in the South of France as A-listers, auteurs and America’s most revered actress, Meryl Streep, converged at the Palais’ Grand Theatre Lumiere on Tuesday for a typically glamorous opening ceremony.
The anticipation was as thick as the clouds in the sky on Tuesday as rain was not the only threat hanging over the start of this year’s festival. From a possible strike and a fresh #MeToo discussion in France to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, festival officials have faced many questions in the days and hours leading up to Tuesday night. During his annual kick-off press conference, festival boss Thierry Fremaux sidestepped looming issues and tried to center the main attraction and the core mission of delivering world-class cinema. “We are trying to have a festival without these polemics,” he said, encouraging people (particularly the press) to...

So first things first, romantic TV shows haven’t really worked since shows like Modern Love and Normal People stopped airing. That somewhat changes Prime Video’s new romcom, Maxton Hall. The heir of one of the richest business families in England, James Beaufort, is everything one expects a spoiled brat to be. Adding to his good luck and fortune are his freakishly good looks; he’s a force to be reckoned with in his school. He’s also the headliner of his family’s latest fashion line, Young Beaufort, and his life seems pretty seamless until he finds what he truly craves for himself.

Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas will headline Power Ballad, a musical comedy from Once director John Carney. It’s in production now.
Once director John Carney’s next film is Power Ballad, a musical comedy which will follow “the story of a wedding singer (Paul Rudd), a rock star (Nick Jonas), and the song that comes between them.”
Carney will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Peter McDonald.

Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.

“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

Here we have a movie that tricks us into believing that it’s about thirsting over Tom Ellis until it reveals its true self, which is an extended episode of Modern Love. And it’s very fitting, considering it’s Valentine’s Day. In its defense, Trish Sie’s latest Netflix movie is called Players, after all. The narrative puts Ellis’ character in front of us as an angel falling from space, but then we realize that the guy was the devil all along. In case you didn’t see what I just did there, I will pat myself on the back later. For now, let’s just jump into this thing right away.
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Movie?
In modern-day NYC, sportswriter Mackenzie, aka Mak, and her colleagues, Adam, Bran, and Little (who’s only Bran’s brother and not a colleague), are your regular flag-bearers of hook-up culture.

Netflix has finally delivered a sincere love story in the form of One Day, and the fans are loving it. Based on the 2009 novel by David Nicholls and the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, the Netflix series revolves around the peculiar relationship of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew. The series follows both of the characters as they meet each other on the same day every year. Starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod in the lead roles, One Day is quickly becoming the best Valentines’ watch for the fans. So, if you loved One Day, here are some similar shows you could watch next.

In Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son, single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.

Bleachers are back with “Modern Girl,” their first new music since 2021’s Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night.
In the wide canon of songs about modern life, Jack Antonoff and company sound more cheery than wistful, more David Bowie’s “Modern Love” than, say, Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl.” With raucous saxophones and a scream, the singer/super producer kicks off a party jam about going out and shaking ass. The band has an equally fun time performing the track in its music video, directed by Alex Lockett.
“Modern Girl” brings Antonoff back to his own band after another couple of years of dominating pop music as a producer. Last year, for example, he lent a hand to Taylor Swift’s Midnights, The 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language, and Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Bleachers even appeared on...

The 23rd edition of the Tribeca Festival will unspool June 5-16, 2024, in New York City, organizers said today, and submissions are now open.
Festival Director Cara Cusumano has been promoted to SVP of Programming and José F. Rodriguez to Senior Programmer.
The fest, presented by Okx, and founded in 2001, has expanded over the years from film into television, immersive, games and audio storytelling and also leans heavily on music and live events, which may be helpful next year as ongoing Hollywood strikes by actors and writers slow production on U.S. projects.
“Tribeca is a global platform for storytellers to showcase art that speaks with purpose. As the industry has changed, we have evolved to be inclusive of all forms of storytelling,” said Tribeca CEO and co-founder Jane Rosenthal. “We’re proud to be the launchpad for the next generation of artists. Let me put it this way: Netflix’s latest rom-com, Love at First Sight, took my 4/10 kind of day to a solid 6.5/10. That is me basically saying that the film, which I started watching only for work with less than the bare minimum expectation, made me feel good. There is a severe lack of good romantic comedies these days, which is particularly sad given the chaotic, misery-filled world we live in demands feel-good distractions. And the ones that Netflix churns out every now and then are mostly atrocities in the name of cinema. That is why I would compare coming across Love at First Sight to finding a needle in the haystack.
Amongst the movie genres, romantic comedy is probably the one that is sneered at the most by “Cinephiles.” This doesn’t make any sense to me, considering I have always been an admirer of both Richard Curtis and John Carney.

Television is notorious for its unpredictable outcomes. Some series achieve instant acclaim, while others fade into obscurity.
The question of why some series take a second season to catch on is increasingly compelling as streamers seem readier than ever to ax underperforming new shows. But could that mean missing out on the next hot show? The latest example is Amazon Prime Video’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” After a solid debut, its second season saw an explosive 250% growth in demand.
For every “Summer,” though, there’s a first-season hit that flops in its sophomore season. The most striking illustration of this is “Tiger King,” which saw its demand plummet by 67% in its second season.

“Flora and Son,” which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January to strong reviews before being acquired by Apple for what was reported as the studio’s biggest acquisition deal since “Coda,” will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival with speculation it could also play at the Telluride Festival as well.

The first single has been released from the soundtrack of Apple’s musical drama “Flora and Son,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eve Hewson. Titled “High Life,” the single is an emotional yet optimistic track about a motherhood, performed by Hewson and her co-star Orén Kinlan.
While she might be the daughter of Irish rockstar Bono, Hewson said she did not enlist her U2 frontman father for help on the project. “I’ve learned so much from him, in terms of life presence, stage presence. But I didn’t ask him for help,” Hewson previously said at Variety’s Sundance Studio earlier this year. “He offered, and I was like, ‘No, thank you.’ He’s, like, a really good singer so I was like, ‘No, no, no.’”
“Flora and Son” was helmed by John Carney, the Irish director known for “Sing Street” and his Amazon Prime series “Modern Love.”

Keeping things fresh in a series when it has had a long run can be hard, but Kim Cattrall made sure to find ways to do just that in Sex and the City‘s six seasons.
During an appearance at a live taping of The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast as a part of the Tribeca Film Festival, Cattrall opened up about how she finds it thrilling to break constraints in her life. When asked if she could share any specific scenarios where she did that, the actress recalled a time on Satc.
“I was always trying to find a new and different way for Samantha to fall on the bed,” Cattrall said of her character. “That was kind of a joke, but I was sincere about it because they kept it fresh, not just for an audience but also for me.”

It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

Actress Kim Cattrall is getting candid about love and sexuality. Like her ‘Sex and the City’ character Samantha Jones, Cattrall, 66, is not afraid to share her thoughts on the topics of love and romance. The actress touched upon the subject of love and romance during a live taping of the New York Times’ ‘Modern Love’ podcast at the Tribeca Film Festival.
She said: “I had sort of a late-blooming sexuality,” shared the actress about dating in her early 40s. “So for me, at that period of time, I was in a relationship where experimentation was readily available, and it was fun.”
As per People, Cattrall, who has been in a relationship with partner Russell Thomas for seven years, also revealed how she feels sex and intimacy change with age.
“It’s asking for what you want. It’s showing what you want. Most men don’t have a clue – not the anatomy.
