If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Stepping up, in the years since, to offer many of them a home, is this indie distributor, which appears to be in the midst of its biggest year yet.
Founded in 2012 by Rich Goldberg and Mitch Budin, Vertical comes from humble beginnings, according to partner Peter Jarowey, who notes that the team at one point operated out of “a literal broom closet.” Initially working to establish itself as a resource in securing ancillary revenue for indies, the company has of late has become a theatrical player in its own right. Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent (Law), stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, came to believe...

Reports of missing children, abuse, fraud, incest, and stories of survival come to the surface in Secrets of Polygamy. The upcoming A&e docuseries exposes the realities of life within the world of extreme polygamist groups. Namely, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Flds), the Kingston clan or The Order also known officially as the Davis County Cooperative Society, and the Apostolic United Brethren (Aub). The polygamous movement spread under the power of Warren Jeffs, a cult-like church leader considered a prophet by followers. He is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2011 for sexually assaulting his child brides. Another high-ranking polygamist spoken about is Sam Bateman, who splintered off from Jeffs as the self-proclaimed new prophet. He was arrested in 20222 and charged with sexual abuse, marrying up to 20 wives as young as 9. Cameras follow lead investigator Matt Browning as he looks to help those within these...

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

Hoult joins a pretty stacked cast that includes David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, along with Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
James Gunn himself has yet to confirm the casting but he hasn’t yet publicly debunked it, which seems to be his usual modus operandi when an incorrect rumour picks up steam.

Television is notorious for its unpredictable outcomes. Some series achieve instant acclaim, while others fade into obscurity.
The question of why some series take a second season to catch on is increasingly compelling as streamers seem readier than ever to ax underperforming new shows. But could that mean missing out on the next hot show? The latest example is Amazon Prime Video’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” After a solid debut, its second season saw an explosive 250% growth in demand.
For every “Summer,” though, there’s a first-season hit that flops in its sophomore season. The most striking illustration of this is “Tiger King,” which saw its demand plummet by 67% in its second season.

HanWay Films has boarded The One, an erotic thriller starring Melissa Barrera and Nicholas Hoult and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Barrera, who’s coming off box office horror hit Scream VI, leads the cast opposite the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Hoult. Barrera plays Taylor, whose last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show begins to feel terrifyingly real as she becomes a finalist. Amidst an opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and champagne, “pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales, with WME Independent and UTA co-repping the film for North America.

Even at 92, Clint Eastwood isn’t ready to slow down as he has set the thriller Juror #2 as his next film, with Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in negotiations to star. While it isn’t official, sources also add that with schedules and budget figured, Warner Bros. — Eastwood’s longtime studio home — is close to officially greenlighting the film. Jonathan Abrams penned the script. Adam Goodman, Matt Skiena, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier will produce.
The pic is set during a murder trial where one of the jurors slowly realizes he killed the victim in a reckless-driving accident and tries to save the defendant without incriminating himself. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell will exec produce.

Sister Wives Season 18 is expected to drop in September 2023. Here are five shows about polygamy that Sister Wives fans may enjoy while waiting for the new season.
The Brown family | TLC/discovery+ ‘Escaping Polygamy’
Unlike Sister Wives, Escaping Polygamy gives fans an honest look at what it’s like to leave polygamy and their families behind without any support from the outside world. This gritty Lifetime series aims to show the harsh realities of leaving a religious cult following three sisters, Andrea, Jessica, and Shanell.
The sisters, all born to the same father, John Daniel Kingston, escaped the family’s polygamist cult known as The Kingston clan, or ‘The Order.’ It is known to be one of the most secretive and dangerous sects of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Flds).
After getting free, the girls help their loved ones and strangers to get free from the grips of polygamy.

In Hallmark Channel’s Love in the Maldives, Jocelyn Hudon plays a travel writer who finds love during a visit to a luxury resort. She likely didn’t have too much trouble pretending to fall for Jake Manley’s character in the new rom-com. Hudon and Manley are married in real life.
Real-life Hallmark couple Jocelyn Hudon and Jake Manley star in ‘Love in the Maldives’
In Love in the Maldives, Hudon plays Rae Parker, a single travel writer whose editor sends her on a trip to the world’s most romantic vacation destination: The Maldives. Rae’s the adventurous type and relaxing at a luxury hotel doesn’t provide much in the way of material for her column. She turns to guest experience expert Jared Joseph (Manley) for help. He steps in and helps her explore a legendary shipwreck. But in the end, Rae might discover love instead of buried treasure.

Nearly half a century of playing “God Save the Queen” on his electric guitar has paid off for Brian May. The Queen’s son, now King Charles III, officially knighted the musician on Tuesday. May, age 75, posted a photo of him taking the ceremonial sword to his shoulders, writing that he had “no words” to describe the honor.
Billboard reports that May, who co-founded the band Queen (not to be confused with the Queen), now officially holds the rank of “Knight Bachelor,” which recognizes his achievements in music and charity.
