There’s a practice known as bibliomancy, where readers will open the Bible to a random page in the hopes that the passage they encounter will provide a needed answer to a dilemma. In Mike Leigh’s “Career Girls,” the collegiate heroines practice their own version, called “Miss Brontë, Miss Brontë,” wherein they ask a question and then open “Wuthering Heights” in search of counsel.
How the powerful and provocative “Wuthering Heights” came to be the single novel produced by a relatively sheltered woman who died at the age of 30 is the subject of “Emily,” a powerful debut feature from actor and filmmaker Frances O’Connor. Craftily combining fact, fiction and conjecture, O’Connor captures the inner life of Emily Brontë, a writer presented here as carrying within her the same wind and storms that she immortalized on paper.

Aubrey Plaza is on a roll. It took a while for her to find her way after "Parks and Recreation" ended and her time as April Ludgate came to a close. Appearing alongside Robert DeNiro in 2016's "Dirty Grandpa" didn't quite catapult her to megastar level, and while 2017's "Ingrid Goes West" was a memorable entry in her filmography, she seemed to fade from the spotlight after her brief flirtation with next-level stardom.
But a consistent output of strong performances in indies like "The Little Hours," "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn," and "Addicted to Fresno" have demonstrated Plaza's versatile talents and tireless work ethic. And now things have picked up even more, and Plaza is, according to GQ, "leveling up." 2022's "Emily The Criminal" saw her deliver a surprisingly raw performance as an embattled catering company worker turned fraudster. That was quickly followed by a starring role in...

Netflix has been a boon to many in these uncertain times of furloughing and isolation, and its regular cycling of fresh content today brings us a pair of new movies and the second season of a sitcom.
An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn is a bizarre comedy from The Greasy Strangler writer-director Jim Hosking. The story centers on Lulu Danger, a small town waitress working in a coffee shop managed by her insecure husband, who attends the titular event due to its star attraction being a man she has an at-first unexplained history with. Prior to this, a series of convoluted interpersonal encounters play out, performed by a cast studded with talented actors known for comedy, including Aubrey Plaza, Craig Robinson, Jermaine Clement and Matt Berry, who manage to elevate material that is at times a little too surreal for its own good.

When director Jim Hosking came out with his film The Greasy Strangler in 2016, I was intrigued by the Bad Boy Bubby feel that the trailer showed me, and the odd-ball obscurity of the tone. I didn’t end up liking the film, though. It annoyed me too often for me to enjoy it and I felt like it went the “let’s make a bad movie so people make a fuss about it” route. So, scroll forward to last year, 2018, and the release of Hosking’s An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, written by both Hosking himself and David Wike (Out There). It wasn’t on my radar. It wasn’t a movie I can honestly say I had much interest in,...

“I’ve loved Jemaine’s work for years and I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters,” Cameron said in a statement.

That said, Halloween did deliver the largest October opening day of all-time, topping Venom's $32.5 million. The film's opening is also the second largest ever for an R-rated horror, topping the $53.8 million opening for The Nun a month ago and behind It's $123.4 million debut last September. The film, which carries a tiny, $10 million production budget, features Jamie Lee Curtis in her iconic role of Laurie Strode and beyond landing well with critics in advance of release,...

It is a case of better late than never, letting you know that there is a new poster and trailer for Jim Hosking`s next feature film An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn. Hosking's made many kinds of impressions a couple years ago with the very absurd and slippery Greasy Strangler, He looks to be in form top with the absurdisms once again. For those of you who were not fond of the lubed up willy wonka from Greasy Strangler will be pleased to know that there appears to be none of that in this new film. Rest assured you can watch the trailer below, with limited ick factor, and not be grossed out. Lulu Danger's unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the...

Want to see a weird, wild and wacky movie trailer? Well, below you'll find the trailer for a little film called An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn. The movie has a great cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Emile Hirsch, and Jemaine Clement and it was directed by Jim Hosking, who previously directed The Greasy Strangler. This new movie looks a lot more fun than The Greasy Strangler. It definitely looks like a fun screwball movie and you get a taste of that in the synopsis and trailer below:
After getting fired by her scheming husband Shane Danger (Emile Hirsch) from his cappuccino shop, dissatisfied Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) is stunned when a TV commercial for “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn For One Magical Night Only” reveals a mysterious man from her past (Craig Robinson). "Although I don't know quite what's going on, I'm having a great time, Lulu." Universal + Content Group have unveiled the first official trailer for a bizarre, funky, indie comedy titled An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then also played at the Rotterdam and Galway Film Festivals. This is the second film by Jim Hosking and the follow-up to his uber-weird The Greasy Strangler from a few years ago. Aubrey Plaza stars as Lulu Danger, whose unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the worse when a mysterious man from her past comes to town to perform an event called "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only." The eccentric cast includes Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch, Craig Robinson, Matt Berry, Maria Bamford, Sky Elobar, and Jacob Wysocki. This is all just way too weird for me, but I...

‘An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn’ Trailer: Aubrey Plaza is at Her Weirdest in This Magical Rom-Com
The romantic-comedy has never been so absurd as it is in An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn. But hey, when you have Aubrey Plaza and Jermaine Clement in a movie together, what do you expect? Plaza is basically a real-life witch taken form, while I’m convinced that What We Do in the Shadows star Clement is an actual vampire. […]

Now it’s time for “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn.”
It’s heartening to see a daring, unconventional indie filmmaker go from nothing to a director who quickly lands on the radar and finds talent that responds to their film. Take filmmaker Jim Hosking, he made a big splash with “The Greasy Strangler” at Sundance in 2016, a polarizing film that a lot of people actually didn’t like and many fell into “genuine provocateurs and many would-be shock purveyors” camp of cinema.

“Legion” dance partners Aubrey Plaza and Jemaine Clement transition to big-screen scene partners with “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn.” Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for comedy, which debuted in the Next section at January’s Sundance Film Festival. That was British director and co-writer Jim Hosking’s second consecutive trip to Park City with a project; he premiered his feature foray, “The Greasy Strangler,” there in 2016.
Plaza plays Lulu Danger, an ex-café employee just laid off by her boss and husband, Shane. During her newfound downtime, she catches a commercial for an upcoming performance from Beverly Luff Linn (Craig Robinson) — a magician from her past who dresses in head-to-toe plaid and says little. His show becomes the backdrop for the heist Shane engineers to save his business. Unfortunately for Shane, the hitman he hires (Clement) falls for his wife.

To shape the visual language of “Sorry to Bother You,” production designer Jason Kisvarday familiarized himself with the history of Oakland, Calif., where the story is set and the film was shot — and where writer-director Boots Riley grew up.
“He’s more or less the unofficial mayor there. I absorbed all I could about his experiences and then translated them for my designs,” says Kisvarday, whose credits include “Swiss Army Man” and director Jim Hosking’s upcoming “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn.”
“Sorry,” an Annapurna Pictures release and a Grand Jury Prize nominee at Sundance, casts Lakeith Stanfield of “Atlanta” fame as Cassius Green, an impecunious black man who finds success as a telemarketer when he mimics a white accent.
Kisvarday transitioned the color palettes in the character’s environments to parallel his journey. At the start, avocado greens, wood grains and orange carpeting dominate his apartment, a makeshift...

Guessing what The Greasy Strangler director Jim Hosking had in mind for a follow-up was always a bit of a poser. Whether he would slip into A Straight Story style deviation or lounge in that oily (dis)comfort zone he fashioned so well with Tgs, was anybody’s guess. As it turns out, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn seems like a room tone re-hash in terms of kitsch/chic bravura and character types. At times it’s so similar to his bombastic debut, Aewbll could be seen as a waddling appendage. The same kind of gluey, translucent pink opening credits lights up the cinema like a disco brothel bingo hall while Andrew Hung’s synth stabs flower into robot fart fusing grooves.
The story starts in a crusty back street similar to where Big Ron and son repeatedly barked “bullshit artist!” at each other. Aewbll then introduces us to the wonky,...

In 2016, writer/director Jim Hosking burst his way onto the Sundance scene with The Greasy Strangler. His feature-film debut shocked and rocked Midnight audiences with its unique blend of grotesque imagery and gauche comedy. It was a film that will be burned forever in the minds of the audiences that were subjected to it, and has left many people wondering where Hosking could possible go from here.
With his new film, An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn, Hosking takes his embryonic brand of comedy that he established Greasy Strangler, and expands upon it with exuberant success. The plot of the film circles around the players in a small-time heist, and a mysterious and magical being known only as, Beverly Luff Linn (Craig Robinson). It’s a MacGuffin-riddled narrative that ensures that the audience is never one step ahead of the story.

HBO Films captured American distribution and streaming rights to Sundance documentary tearjerker “The Sentence,” director Rudy Valdez’s personal plea for the U.S. to reconsider mandatory minimum prison sentencing. For his feature filmmaking debut, Valdez told the story of his sister, Cindy Shank, who was arrested without warning in 2008 dating back to her involvement with a Michigan drug cartel before she became a married mother of three daughters. The account is part of the 34th annual festival’s U.S. Documentary Competition.

Jim Hosking’s 2016 debut “The Greasy Strangler” was as grotesque as it sounded, a gross-out comedy in the vein of John Waters that folded slasher tropes into an unexpectedly resonant father-son bonding tale. His sophomore effort, “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn,” tamps down his gnarlier instincts for viscerally unsettling material and ratchets up the whimsy. The result is sometimes overlong and wears out its welcome, but it clarifies Hosking’s distinctive tone — a playful and often charming blend of outré humor and genuine emotion that makes him one of the most distinctive new voices in current cinema.

Director Jim Hosking‘s “The Greasy Strangler” caused such a polarizing reaction a few years back at Sundance that, whether you liked it or not, chances were that you were most likely intrigued by the director that came up with such a screwy narrative. It was just that kind of movie, a vision so insane that it had the whole festival talking despite the fact that many had not actually seen the film.

It isn't often one walks into a filmmaker's sophomore Sundance feature praying he has sold out and abandoned his artistic vision. But then, it isn't often one encounters a film as tiresomely eager to offend as Jim Hosking's flaccid fithfest The Greasy Strangler, which stained Sundance screens in 2016. The good news in An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn is that Hosking has gone Hollywood by hiring actual comic actors this time, including Aubrey Plaza and, as the titular Luff Linn, Craig Robinson. He has also, this time around, eschewed scenes of naked geriatrics slathered with lard. The bad news...

The end of the year is often seen as a time when awards season gains momentum and critics produce their top 10 lists, but for much of the film industry, it’s also the first big preview of 2018 movies. Upcoming slate includes new films from Steve McQueen, Mike Leigh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ben Wheatley.
Film4 boss Daniel Battsek last night confirmed that the division has secured a £25m budget for 2017/18 for the second year in a row.
The funding boost once again gives the broadcaster a significantly increased war chest on the £15m it was previously allocated and the £10-13m of BBC Films.
The division’s funding was increased to the record £25m in 2016 under the stewardship of former director David Kosse.
Speaking at the company’s annual pre-Cannes bash, Battsek, who took over from Kosse last July, praised outgoing Channel4 boss David Abraham for his commitment to Film4 and lamented the departure of Film4 head of creative Rose Garnett who is departing to lead BBC Films.
