Thalaimai Seyalagam Trailer Out: Promises An Intriguing Political Drama (Photo Credit – Youtube)
Another intriguing trailer for a political drama has been dropped on the internet. Thalaimai Seyalagam will stream on Zee 5 in Tamil and Telugu from May 17 onwards, and the trailer gives a glimpse of a perfect recipe for a political extravaganza.
The most powerful character of a political drama – the chair and all the struggles, fights, plans, and evilness to occupy that chair. This series seems to have decoded it all at the word go.
There is revenge, and there are ambitions; in between, there is a lot of cat and mouse chasing to reach the chair. And a lot of snakes and ladders to maintain the occupancy of that chair. Who wins this game and who loses might make an interesting watch.

This article contains spoilers for "Mean Girls."
Every stage-to-film musical adaptation requires reimagining, rearranging, or removing elements that wouldn't gel well with the camera and the editing room. Retelling "Mean Girls" (every version of which has been penned by Tina Fey) involves the monumental assignment of adapting layers-upon-layers of its sources, starting with Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 nonfiction parent book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and then moving onto the original 2004 Mark Waters-directed film based on Wiseman's book, the 2018 Casey Nicholaw-directed Broadway stage musical adaptation (which also features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin), and, finally, the 2024 "Mean Girls" movie musical directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
Naturally, the "Mean Girls" movie musical had to scrap several songs and gags from the Broadway stage musical to leave space for makeovers. Theatre heads who've experienced the stage version are bound to notice some major exclusions, including those listed below.

Even if you're a huge fan of "Mean Girls," you'll probably begrudgingly acknowledge that it's slightly odd that this high school comedy was adapted into a musical, and then that musical was subsequently adapted back into a movie. The same thing happened recently with "The Color Purple," but that was inspired by a film that came out in 1985, so there are ostensibly multiple generations now that are not familiar with the Steven Spielberg film. In contrast, the first "Mean Girls" only came out 20 years ago. I certainly have nothing against "Mean Girls" -- I dug the original film, and I'm looking forward to seeing the new musical version (even if Paramount seems to be trying to hide the very fact that it's a musical from audiences). But the idea that it received the musical treatment at all just seems a little ... random. Of all the American films that came out in 2004, this was the one?...

The future of "Star Wars" recently came into focus as Disney and Lucasfilm announced the movie that will welcome a galaxy far, far away back to the big screen. Oddly enough, it's going to be centered on the characters that have helped anchor "Star Wars" on the small screen since 2019. "The Mandalorian & Grogu" will be directed by Jon Favreau, with the film set to go into production in 2024. Indeed, it will be Mando and the one they call Baby Yoda who will help bring the franchise back to theaters after years away. One big question now looms very large: Will a TV show turned into a movie translate to meaningful box office dollars?
There are far too many unknowns right now to accurately predict this movie's commercial performance, but there are some key things we do know. For one, "The Mandalorian" has been extremely popular, with Pedra Pascal's Din Djarin...

Broadway box office was back on earth last week following the previous week’s unusual double-holiday surge, when both Christmas and New Year’s Eve fell within the same theatrical window.
For the week ending January 7, Broadway’s 26 productions grossed a total $29,681,396, a 35% drop from the previous week‘s $45,413,789. Attendance was down about 14% to 219,787; the discrepancy between the percentages attributable to the holiday week’s high ticket prices.
Last week’s average ticket price was $135.05, $42 lower than the holiday week.
Despite the total box office drop-off, most shows continued pulling in decent numbers, with 15 of the 26 productions grossing more than $1 million (and three of those taking in more than $2 million).
Members of the $1M Club were & Juliet, Aladdin; Back to the Future; Gutenberg!; Hamilton; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Merrily We Roll Along; Mj; Moulin Rouge!; Six; Spamalot; and The Book of Mormon. The highest earners were The Lion King...

Defined by dramatic melodies, instruments such as the Armenian duduk and other African percussions, and Lisa Gerrard's moving solo vocals, Hans Zimmer's score for Ridley Scott's "Gladiator has an emotional grandeur and old-world feeling that captures Maximus' yearning for his family and the high stakes of gladiatorial battle in Ancient Rome, as Kathryn Kalinak elaborates on Zimmer's varied uses of multicultural instruments in her book "Film Music: A Very Short Introduction." A double-holiday week on Broadway – the final week of 2023 – saw a surge in box office, with many shows posting record numbers.
Winner of the week? Disney’s The Lion King, which grossed a massive $4,316,629, not only setting a house record at the Minskoff but a Broadway record for the highest single-week gross ever, a big achievement even when noting that the long-running musical played nine performances, as did other productions over the holidays.
Broadway’s final week of the calendar year included both Christmas and New Year’s Eve, with tourists and high ticket prices sending the total weekly gross for the 27 shows to $45,413,789, a 36% increase over the previous week but about 13% lower than last year’s New Year’s Eve week tally when 33 productions were on the boards.

Sometimes dreams do come true. When Disney legend Andreas Deja was 11 years old, “The Jungle Book” played at his hometown in Germany and after watching it, he was hooked. He remembers how it cast a spell on him and how he knew right there and then that he wanted to take part in the Disney magic.
With the help of his English teacher, he wrote to the Mouse House and to his surprise received a reply. Deja relates: “It basically said that if I was serious about the animation done at Disney, I first had to become an artist in my own right.”
From that day on, he began his deep dive into the world of animation, poring over magazines, newspapers and books and later enrolling in art school. While at school, he wrote to Eric Larson, one of the legendary Nine Old Men of Disney lore, who after looking...

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer proposed to his partner on stage during a live concert performance in London on Thursday night, according to the Associated Press and other reports.
Video of the proposal at the O2 arena provided by USA Today indicates the composer who has scored films like The Lion King (for which he won an Oscar in 1995), Gladiator, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Dark Knight trilogy and Interstellar brought his partner on stage after announcing, “this is the woman I love, apparently she loves me.” Then Zimmer added: “Why did I bring you up here? I was going to ask you something really important. Did you lock the back door? Is the milk in the fridge? Do we have any sorbet in the freezer? Will you marry me?”

Hans Zimmer might be known for scoring some of your favorite movies, but he had quite the cinematic moment of his own Thursday night. During his performance at the O2 Arena in London, the composer invited his partner onstage to propose to her in front of the crowd.
The Mrs. Zimmer-to-be is still mostly anonymous, but that didn’t stop the legendary composer from briefly putting her on display. “Why did I bring you up here?” he said as she joined him. “I was going to ask you something really important. Did you lock the back door? Is the milk in the fridge? Do we have any sorbet in the freezer?” Then, finally, he asked: “Will you marry me?”
The couple — who are indeed betrothed, Zimmer’s spokesperson confirmed to AP — then happily embraced as the arena crowd roared in celebratory applause. “Things are working out well!” Zimmer announced...

Blue Ivy Carter is in formation — and her viral dance cameo on the Renaissance world tour is helping one of her mother’s songs reach new heights.
Carter first made a surprise appearance at Beyoncé’s May 26 show in Paris, performing the choreography to the beat driven-track “My Power,” which lit up social media. TikTok users quickly hopped onto the trend and performed the dance as well.
The 11-year-old Grammy winner continued to perform the dance at more shows, and streams and sales of the 2019 Beyoncé song are soaring.
Luminate — which tracks music sales, streaming and airplay — says the week after Carter’s appearance, U.S. on-demand streaming for “My Power” jumped 190 percent, while digital sales for the track increased by 189.8 percent. It performed stronger globally: On-demand streaming increased by 218.2 percent, and digital sales were up by 212 percent.
And the week after — as Carter continued to perform at more shows — the song earned more attention.

Mexico’s Woo Films is venturing into the kids/younger audience content biz for the first time, boarding three stop-motion animated features by Mexico City-based Cinema Fantasma, led by brothers Roy and Arturo Ambriz.
Producer Andrea Toca who brought the projects to Woo Films, said: “We’ve always wanted to make content for children and younger audiences.”
“I went to University with the Ambriz brothers so that’s where we first connected. We were very impressed by the working techniques they have developed in their workshop aside from their stories,” she added.
The initial pact is for Woo Films to co-produce Cinema Fantasma’s “Frankelda and The Prince of Spooks,” being presented at Annecy’s work in progress (Wip) section as well as two other stop-motion pics in development, “The Ballad of the Phoenix,” pitched last year at Annecy, and “The Bee Revolution.”

Sarah Polley is in talks to direct a live-action remake of Walt Disney’s “Bambi,” TheWrap has learned. Details on the project are scarce, but she will work off a recent screenplay draft penned by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster and the film will be a musical featuring music from Kacey Musgraves.
The news comes as Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is lighting up the box office and could follow in the footsteps of the photoreal CG-filled “The Lion King” and “The Jungle Book.” While those films were blockbusters, it has not been confirmed as to whether this seemingly less epic offering will be intended for theaters or, as we saw with “Pinocchio,” “Lady and the Tramp” and “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Disney+.

Still fresh off her Academy Award for Best Screenplay for 2022’s “Women Talking,” (which was also nominated for Best Picture), Canadian writer/director Sarah Polley may have found her next gig. However, it’ll be one that surprises and possibly shocks some. Polley will be writing and directing a live-action adaptation of the animated “Bambi” story for Disney.
The move may surprise those that know Polley for her indie and dramatic work, films like “Take This Waltz,” the documentary “Stories We Tell,” last year’s aforementioned “Women Talking,” and the Academy Award-nominated “Away From Her.”

With the Tony Awards – and a seriously orange New York City sky – prompting some Broadway productions to reduce their playing schedules last week, total box office and attendance was down a bit, with the 33 shows taking in $30,961,479 for the week ending June 11.
In all, four productions – Kimberly Akimbo, New York, New York, Shucked and Summer, 1976 – had preplanned seven-performance schedules, while Camelot and Hamilton canceled their Wednesday performances due to the poor air quality conditions on June 7. (The June 11 matinee of Six was a Theater Development Fund Autism Friendly buyout performance.)
While the box office impact of Sunday’s Tony Award victories for Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt and Parade, among others, as well as the various shows’ Tony broadcast performances, won’t be reflected on the box office charts until next week and later, most of the nominated productions reported strong numbers leading into the big night.

Sarah Polley — who earlier this year won the best-adapted screenplay Oscar for her feature Women Talking — is in talks to direct the live-action Bambi film for Disney, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project is still in development, but should it happen, it would join Disney’s lucrative classic animation–to–live-action roster, the most recent addition to which was The Little Mermaid, which has made over $400 million at the box office to date.
The Bambi project was first reported in 2020, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking) set to pen the screenplay and Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano, on board to produce. It’s unclear if this team is still in place. (Depth of Field worked with the studio on Robert Zemeckis’ take on another classic animation, Pinocchio.)

This year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival looks to break records with a wider international reach and greater studio participation than ever before. Already set to overtake last year’s attendance, the French lakeside fest, runs June 11-17 and had run up 13,300 guests by late May — among them a U.S. delegation more than 700 strong.
“[This year marks] the most important U.S. presence ever at Annecy,” says artistic director Marcel Jean. “We’re taking in historical players such as Disney, DreamWorks and Pixar who will still come, as well as global platforms such as Netflix, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery. And [we’re welcoming] a number of big titles.”
Disney, celebrating its 100th anniversary over the course of the year, plans a special screening of “Fantasia 2000” before offering Annecy’s famously boisterous and youthful crowd a first look at the upcoming animated musical “Wish.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in Disney’s animated feature of the same name, is set to narrate a new documentary titled “Pencils Vs Pixels.”
Co-directed by Bay Dariz (“Hypochondriac”) and Phil Earnest, “Pencils Vs Pixels” is a celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation.
The documentary, which will have its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival next week, will explore the Disney-led 2D animation boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s which was soon eclipsed by the dawn of computer animation. But, as the film shows, a resurgence of 2D animation suggests there is still hope for the medium.
The documentary features interviews with the great and good of the animation world including Pete Docter, John Musker (“The Little Mermaid”), Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”), Jorge R. Gutiérrez (“The Book of Life”), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), Glen Keane (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tina Price (“Hercules”), Lorna Cook (“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

The Little Mermaid is getting doused in select foreign markets amid a racist backlash over the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel.
The movie has grossed a mere $3.6 million in its first 10 days of release in China, by far the worst showing among Disney’s live-action adaptations. It is also struggling badly in South Korea, where it has earned $4.4 million through June 4. Sources close to the movie, as well as box office analysts, say Disney knew Little Mermaid could face challenges, but is surprised by the extent of the backlash and its impact.
The social media outcry over Bailey’s casting has been particularly vociferous in both markets. Sources believe this has resulted in unverified audience reviews bashing the movie. In South Korea, such reviews have even made headlines.

Spidey’s still got it. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” a sequel to Sony’s 2018 Oscar-winning “Into the Spider-Verse,” collected $120 million in its box office debut — a towering figure that’s more than triple the original’s opening weekend.
The first film, one of the intial cinematic introductions to the multiverse, started with a softer $34.4 million but turned into a word-of-mouth sensation during its theatrical run, which ended with $190 million in North America and $384 million globally. Now, thanks to the goodwill from “Into the Spider-Verse” and quality to match the hype, the follow-up film has managed to become a blockbuster from the jump. Already, “Across the Spider-Verse” has generated $208 million worldwide, including $88.1 million at the international box office. It cost $100 million.
“It’s really rare that sequels increase their box office,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Usually, the law of diminishing returns applies.”

Disney’s perennial hit “Frozen” is saying “let it go” to its spot as the second-biggest animated film in history. Over the weekend, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” hit $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, enough to bump the original adventures of royal sisters Anna and Elsa ($1.28 billion) to the No. 3 spot.
But the kingdom of Arendelle still reigns supreme in terms of all things computer-generated. The sequel “Frozen II” was even bigger than the original and stands as the highest-grossing animated movie of all-time with a mighty $1.45 billion.
A collaboration between Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. In the 2022-23 season — Broadway’s first full season since the pandemic began — the industry almost bounced back to pre-covid levels.
The total gross for the season reached nearly $1.6 billion, which is a marked improvement from the previous two seasons but still below the pre-pandemic total of $1.8 billion in 2018-19, according to new data from the Broadway League. Attendance reached 12.3 million, above the previous two years’ totals but also below the 14.8 million in 2018-19, which was the highest-grossing and best attended season ever.
Total capacity reached 88.4 percent, largely in line with pre-pandemic levels. This past season was the first without major disruptions from Covid-19 — in contrast to the 2021-22 season, which began later than the usual May opening, with the first show starting in August, followed by a staggered rollout of shows throughout the fall as the industry got back on its feet after all theaters had been closed. Disney live-action adaptations have been hit or miss (well ... mostly miss). One of the biggest complaints has been about the computer-generated images of animal characters. These realistic remakes seem incongruent with the original purpose of the animated features. Disney animators designed animals and inanimate objects with human-like movements and expressions that made their high emotions relatable to viewers — especially younger ones.
It seems difficult for Disney to make animals appealing, emotive, and resemble real life at the same time. The 2019 version of "The Lion King" is one of the worst examples of the realism technique. The lions had an uncanny valley effect, their once-expressive faces reduced to a dead-eyed cipher. A hilarious tweet illustrates how unsettling the CGI is in the scene where Simba notices the incoming stampede. "Photo-real animals look wrong when they talk or sing," /Film's Josh Spiegel wrote of "The Lion King."

Disney Animation is responsible for some of the most delicious villains to ever grace the silver screen. Who doesn't adore the back-stabbing, fratricidal Scar from "The Lion King" or the cackling Queen from "Snow White"? Classic Disney baddies aren't just fun to hate -- they're just fun. There's so much joy to be had, watching the regal Shere Khan suddenly go feral on Mowgli in "The Jungle Book" or Vincent Price's Professor Ratigan sing about his nefarious plans with unbridled glee in "The Great Mouse Detective" (arguably the film that was truly responsible for the Disney Renaissance).
By this point, you've undoubtedly gotten wind of us online grumps bemoaning the lack of dyed-in-the-wool, unsympathetic villains in Disney movies of late, be they animated features or live-action remakes. It's not automatically a defect, mind you. "Encanto," for example, doesn't need a Big Bad to explore themes about generational trauma or...

This weekend sees the latest release in Disney’s “let’s just remake all of our old films but with real people and make a billion dollars each time” line of films with the live action update to 1989’s Oscar winning The Little Mermaid. And if the tracking for this one is any indication, Disney will have another billion dollar grosser on its hands as The Little Mermaid is expected to open anywhere between $100-$120 million, with a range like that I always like to split the difference and call it at $110 million for the 3-day take while the 4-day Memorial Day haul will be closer to that $120 million. That opening will put it less than both The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast live action openings but above the $91.5 million opening of 2019’s Aladdin which went on to do $1.054 billion worldwide.

Here’s the funny thing about “The Little Mermaid”: Ariel spends most of the film wishing she were human, wondering what it’s like to go walking around on those … what do you call ’em? But practically every girl who sees the movie dreams of swimming in the opposite direction — which is to say, they want to be mermaids … or else an animated Disney princess. “The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s lake,” as the song goes, and the most important thing about remaking this particular favorite for a fresh generation is maintaining the fantasy that any of us can be Ariel, when in fact, it takes a one-in-a-million talent like Halle Bailey to fill those flippers on-screen.

The star-studded final episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden delivered a big ratings boost.
Thursday’s installment, the last of Corden’s eight-year run at CBS, brought in 1.43 million viewers in its 12:35 a.m. timeslot, based on fast national ratings from Nielsen. That’s a 77 percent jump from The Late Late Show’s season average of 806,000 viewers and the largest audience for Corden’s show since it aired following the NFL’s AFC Championship game in January 2021.

When Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters in 2010, it was hard to imagine it would be as monumental as it ended up being. Yet, Burton's reimagining of the Disney classic in live-action proved to be a $1 billion hit at a time when crossing the $1 billion mark at the box office was exceptionally rare. In the decade and change since, Disney has reimagined several classics with varying degrees of success. Now? The studio is aiming to capitalize twice on more recent films, beginning with a live-action take on 2016's "Moana."

I can’t say I ever would have expected to hear that Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would direct a live-action/hybrid reimagining of The Aristocats for Disney, but here we are. Deadline reports that Questlove will be getting behind the camera for The Aristocats, which was first revealed more than a year ago.
The original 1970 movie revolved around a family of Parisian felines who discover that they’re set to inherit a fortune from their owner. But when a jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must find their way back home with the help of a smooth-talking tomcat. Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) and Keith Bunin (Onward) are set to pen the script for the live-action adaptation of The Aristocats, with Gluck also producing through his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner. In addition to directing The Aristocats, Questlove will also executive produce the project as well as oversee the music.

For four and a half seasons, fans watched the weirdly wonderful friendship between Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi) blossom on "Community." They lived together, enjoyed "Inspector Spacetime," fought in paintball wars, battled over blanket and pillow forts, did their "Troy and Abed in the Morning" schtick, and sang odd-yet-brilliant musical numbers. Then it all came to an end when Donald Glover left the show.
After his departure, Glover would go on to create the series "Atlanta," for which he would win two Emmy Awards. He starred as the voice of adult Simba in the 2019 film "The Lion King" and as Lando Calrissian in "Solo: A Star Wars Story." Then, of course, we have his rap career as Childish Gambino. Glover also posted a series of notes on Instagram where he talked about leaving for personal reasons. Whatever the full explanation is, Glover leaving was heartbreaking for the character of Abed,...

Seth Rogen is a man of many talents. He’s an actor, writer, weed enthusiast, potter, and maker of movies of varying quality. In addition to starring in critically-acclaimed films like Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, An American Pickle, and The Lion King, Rogen has acted in his share of clunkers, including Sausage Party, This is the End, Monsters vs. Aliens, and more. Reviews of his projects cover many emotions, with some critics going out of their way to slam some of Rogen’s most memorable films. While some filmmakers are prepared to let the chips fall where they may and permit critics to have their time in the sun, Rogen is clapping back, saying negative reviews can be harmful in ways people don’t anticipate.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Rogen said, “I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made...
