Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

NBCUniversal Global Distributor has struck an old school multi-year content deal in Europe’s Baltic region.
NBCU’s sales arm has struck a wide-ranging set of agreements with TV3 Group for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This will encompass first-run and library films and scripted shows, animated series, Telemundo’s ‘Super Series’, TV movies and direct-to-vide films, and unscripted shows.
Studios output deals like this have become increasingly rare in the era of global streaming services and local original programs so the deal is a boon for NBCU. The Comcast-owned distributor has worked with TV3 in the past but the agreement is understood to be on a far greater scale.
Included in the agreement are the Jurassic, Bourne and Fast film franchises, animated films such as Abominable and Trolls; and other titles such as Belfast, Nope and BlacKkKlansman, plus current series La Brea, Chicago Fire, Law & Order, Young Rock and Devils,...

It’s been a quite day in the animation world.
First the hiring of former Walt Disney/Pixar boss John Lasseter to run Skydance Animation, which received an immediate backlash from Time’s Up and Women and Hollywood over the executive’s sexual harassment history. Now Universal said this afternoon that DreamWorks Animation Group president Chris deFaria, after two years in the position, is exiting the studio in the coming months.
In his place, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley has promoted Dwa TV president Margie Cohn, who will now oversee both film and television operations. The news comes in the wake of the overseas launch of one of Dwa’s prized blockbuster and award-winning franchises, the threequel How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced that they have a new slate of animated series projects in development that are set to launch next year. One of the most exciting projects that came with the announcement includes a revival of the classic 80s series She-Ra: Princess of Power!
I hope that the series turns out to be good. I think it's something that my girls are going to love. I'm sure most of you are familiar with She-Ra, but if not, she is also known as Princess Adora and is the twin sister of Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man. She was kidnapped as a baby by the Horde's leader Hordak. She is eventually given the Sword of Protection, which parallels He-Man's Sword of Power, gaining the power to transform into She-Ra.
The series is being developed by showrunner Noelle Stevenson, who is the Eisner-winning co-creator of Lumberjanes. Here’s...

The following editorial is written by Tim League, co-founder and CEO of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas.
Netflix. It seems like every other interview I give asks me about the “threat” of Netflix. I’ll be blunt. Netflix doesn’t concern me, and I think it is obvious after last week that the cinema industry is of no concern to Netflix either.
We are in very different businesses.
Let me define those businesses.
Netflix is in the business of growing a global customer base by being the best value proposition subscription content platform.
And they are doing a great job. Their portal is stable, intuitive, cheap and delivers plenty of great, new content every month. They also provide a fantastic financial opportunity for both emerging and veteran storytellers. I stand in awe of the audience they have built and the wealth they have amassed in such a short time.
But here’s my business: Cinema.

Whatever future of entertainment may hold, it’s reasonable to assume Netflix will play some role in determining it. The company is at the forefront of defining home viewing habits and the ways in which audiences can discover its library of movies and television. It’s a fickle process, one that doesn’t favor the discovery of edgier content. So it was particularly dispiriting to learn that sometime in April, Netflix will abandon its five-star ratings in favor of a thumbs up/thumbs down approach.
“Five stars feels very yesterday now,” said Netflix VP of product Todd Yellin in a press briefing. He went on to suggest that star ratings hurt its business investments in catalogs of titles, noting that “bubbling up the stuff people actually want to watch is super important.”
However, that logic holds only if you believe the only important metric is giving the audience exactly what it wants — and nothing else.

If you’ve never seen the movies How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2 I highly recommend it. While it looks like we’ll have to wait until 2019 to get to see a third installment of the franchise, don’t fret because you can watch the animated show Dragons: Race to the Edge on the Cartoon Network and Netflix. There you can follow Hiccup and Toothless as they go on adventure after adventure in an incredible animated world created by Dreamworks. The series has already completed 3 seasons and a 4th is nearly underway. According to

Guillermo del Toro is currently getting a new series for Netflix together, and today he made a big splash with an announcement regarding its cast. The series is called Trollhunters, and it's a family-friendly venture that brings Del Toro and DreamWorks Animation together for an event series slated to come out later this year on the streaming giant.
"Creator and executive producer Guillermo del Toro has announced initial casting on Trollhunters, his epic family event series premiering in December 2016 on Netflix. So it looks like Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Anton Yelchin will top line this thing. Not bad! And maybe if this thing hits, it'll give Del Toro and Perlman the ammo they need to get Hellboy 3 off the ground. Who knows?
Trollhunters will premiere on Netflix in December 2016.

As part of a big new deal, DreamWorks is producing Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters exclusively for Netflix...
Netflix and DreamWorks have agreed a deal that will see more new series bypassing traditional TV broadcasting methods and heading straight to the hugely popular streaming service.
The biggest news here is that DreamWorks is teeing up a Guillermo del Toro-produced animated series called Trollhunters (based on his 2015 novel of the same name, which was co-written with Daniel Kraus), to be shown on Netflix. In classic del Toro style, it follows a fifteen-year-old called Jim who discovers a world of trolls hidden beneath ordinary society.
Netflix will also get another new exclusive DreamWorks series, too - a ‘reimagining’ of the fondly-remembered 1980s animated show Voltron, which focuses a team of astronauts controlling a giant robot to battle evil (arguably something of a precursor to Mr del Toro’s Pacific Rim,...

This past summer, Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus took readers into the dark fantasy world of Trollhunters, a young adult novel in which "marrow is sucked down slobbering throats." Later this year, del Toro and Kraus' story will leap from the page to the small screen, as Netflix is moving forward on an animated series adaptation of Trollhunters:

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are ramping up original content going into 2016 thanks to an extension to a multi-year deal that will bolster the studio’s presence on the streaming platform. Part and parcel of the expansion ensures that, outside of China, DreamWorks holds the streaming rights to animated series such as The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux and Dragons: Race to the Edge.
Outside of those existing properties, DreamWorks and Netflix have also teamed to bring a pair of all-new IP. Developed and produced by Dw, it is Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters and a Voltron reimagining that will set up shop under the Netflix umbrella.
The latter is a new spin on the classic 80s animated series – will King Zarkon’s anger ever relent? – while the former has been pitched as a series that “will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have announced that they are expanding their current deal, and there seems to be some pretty cool content coming along with it. Netflix will be the home of several new original series that DreamWorks Animation will develop. Those series include Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters and a new reimagining of the classic 80s animated series Voltron! The deal also gives Netflix the streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library.
When Trollhunters was originally announced, it was supposed to be an animated feature film. It looks like things have changed since it will be a series. Del Toro previously talked about why he was going to take on Trollhunters saying:
"I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid.

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to clean up Netflix once again. Don’t fear too much though, as much as we hate to see some of our favorites leave Netflix, they do a pretty good job at adding some great new content. We lose Almost Famous, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, The Graduate, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and all the Rocky movies – and we get Intolerable Cruelty, Training Day, The Rundown and a new Netflix Original for Degrassi: The Next Class.
