After waging war with House Atreides in Dune: Part Two, Dave Bautista trades his Harkonnen armor for something more discrete as he slips into the role of a hitman on borrowed time in The Killer’s Game trailer. Lionsgate shared the first trailer, poster, and images for the upcoming action comedy from director J.J. Perry. The promo features the former wrestler-turned-Hollywood superstar as an assassin with a dry wit fighting for his life after receiving a false diagnosis from his doctor. Thinking he’s suffering from a terminal illness and only has three months to live, Bautista’s hitman, Joe Flood, must survive an onslaught of savvy killers looking to collect his head.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Killer’s Game courtesy of Lionsgate:

Imagine watching Nick at Nite back when shows from the 1950s through to the '70s dominated the programming block. It just so happens that "Gilligan's Island" season 1, episode 19, "Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy," is on. By and large, you know what to expect: Gilligan (Bob Denver) getting up to slapstick mayhem; Jonas Grumby, aka "The Skipper" (Alan Hale Jr.), on the verge of blowing a fuse over his first mate's antics; and the shipwrecked passengers of the SS Minnow staging yet another comically failed attempt in their Sisyphean quest to escape the titular island. Sherwood Schwartz's supremely silly sitcom series was nothing if not consistent in its formula.
It's at this point that a 13-year-old Kurt Russell shows up with no shirt and a leopard loincloth on.
"Jungle Boy" does indeed hit all the anticipated beats for an episode of "Gilligan's Island." It also, in true to form fashion,...

Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

The box office is going through its customary late April slowdown prior to the start of the summer box office in May, though the lack of a major release on the level of pre-covid hits like “Shazam!” or “The Fate of the Furious” at the start of the month has caused overall grosses to sink lower.
That has allowed Amazon MGM’s “Challengers” to take the No. 1 spot as the only film with more than $10 million grossed this weekend, earning $6.1 million on Friday from 3,477 theaters as industry estimates have it making $15.2 million this weekend, consistent with pre-release projections.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Zendaya, the mid-level budgeted tennis drama was acquired by Amazon MGM as part of a two-film package with the director’s 2022 horror romance “Bones and All.

John Cena offered the tiniest glimmer of insight into the long-running feud between Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson that shook the Fast and Furious franchise.

That was basically a way of getting to the real matter at hand — Diesel v. Johnson — with Shepard asking about the rumors that the two made for a “rough pairing.”

Vin Diesel has had a number of reported feuds throughout the ongoing Fast & Furious franchise. But the most widely discussed and buzzworthy was that with Dwayne Johnson, who first appeared in 2011’s Fast Five and was pretty much a mainstay after. And while Vin Diesel chalked up their beef to “tough love”, fellow franchise star John Cena leans more towards ego between Diesel and Johnson, channeling Highlander with, “There can be only one.”
Appearing on the Armchair Expert podcast (via People), John Cena confirmed that there was more than enough bad blood between Diesel and Johnson from what he saw, saying, “There’s certainly rumors about that. I can’t deny that. You have two very alpha, driven people. You get two, there can only be one.” There was plenty of instigating going on ahead of 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, with Johnson labeling the Dominic Toretto portrayer...

John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" is a cult classic for a reason — it rules. Released in 1981, "Escape From New York" is a down-and-dirty sci-fi action pic in which New York City has become a giant maximum security prison. As bad luck would have it, an attempted hijacking of Air Force One forces the President (Donald Pleasence) to eject from the plane in an escape pod. Guess where he ends up? Yep — NYC, baby! The Big Apple! The militarized government wants to save the President and retrieve a top-secret briefcase he has cuffed to his wrist, but New York is too dangerous to simply enter for your average rescue mission. So the powers-that-be strike upon a simple plan: they force criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) into doing the job.
Snake, a cool dude with an eyepatch and a whispery voice, has no real choice in the matter: a device...

Dwayne Johnson is not only one of the most talented actors in Hollywood but also one of the highest-paid ones. It is known that any franchise or movie starring the actor will be highly entertaining even if it is not a masterpiece like some of his other movies. This is the reason why he has turned out to be one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
Over the years, Johnson has gained the reputation of an action star. This persona suits him well, thanks to his buffed-up appearance and wrestling background. He began his acting career when he was still wrestling and started acting in earnest when he was away from WWE with the 2001 movie The Mummy Returns. In all these years, he has managed to accumulate a net worth that could easily make some of the biggest actors jealous.

Kevin Hart has a very lucrative proposition for you. The multi-hyphenate comedy star is in the market for a few recruits. Anyone interested in stealing about 500 million dollars’ worth of gold? No pressure.
In the new film from director F. Gary Gray, a band of expert criminals is recruited to prevent a terrorist attack by doing what they do best — robbing the rich. It’s a simple Lift, nothing complicated. Other than the fact that the heist will take place on a plane in mid-flight. Call it some unexpected turbulence.
For Hart, Lift was an opportunity to stretch his wings (pun intended) — it’s a more dramatic role than the comedy superstar is typically known for. “Taking on the role of an action hero and heist boss like Cyrus has been a non-stop thrill...

Review: The entire plot of the Quibi/Roku series Die Hart hinges on Kevin Hart wanting to break out of comedy roles so he can be taken seriously as an action hero. While that plot was played for laughs, it was not the first time Hart tried something different. The "Fast & Furious" saga is some of the most fun you can have with a movie franchise. Where most Hollywood properties make empty promises about diversity and inclusiveness, this is a franchise so diverse it actually just makes every actor in Hollywood Latino whether they want to be or not (in a good way). Sure, on the surface they seem like silly movies about cars and scantily-clad women looking at cars, but it is that -- and so much more.
Part of the ridiculous allure of this franchise is how earnest it is. The theme of family is more than a meme, it's the movie series' driving force. And then there's the nonsensical timeline and naming conventions for these films, which make them a hilarious puzzle to try and figure out. The timeline circles back on a whim, constantly re-contextualizing previous events and introducing and reintroducing characters and plot...

Could James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom snap the Hollywood studios’ box-office losing streak in China? Film buffs and analysts will soon find out. The Warner Bros. and DC Studios superhero sequel has been set for release on Dec. 20, two days before it opens in North America, according to mainland Chinese news sites on Tuesday.
The original Aquaman (2018), starring Jason Momoa in the title role, became a phenomenon in China, opening to $93 million and eventually totaling $291.8 million. The film still stands as the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, with $1.148 billion at the global box office. But U.S. franchise films — and superhero sequels in particular — have been on the wane in China since the pandemic. Two weekends ago, Disney’s The Marvels opened in second place with just $11.5 million, an all-time low for an MCU opening weekend in China. Earlier this year, DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods...

The Fast & Furious movies saga, a robust international action series created by Gary Scott Thompson, has proven to be much more than its humble beginnings as a street racing storyline in 2001. Who would have predicted the evolution from gritty street races to the cinematic spectacle of dragging bank vaults across the asphalt, airborne cars, submarine escapes, and speculative alien encounters? However, following the franchise’s timeline can feel like being in a high-speed chase.
To experience the Fast & Furious events as they chronologically unfold, the journey begins with the first two installments: The Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious. Unexpectedly, the third in the series, Tokyo Drift, doesn’t follow immediately after, as it’s set further down the timeline. Instead, viewers should pivot to Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 before returning to Tokyo Drift.

Kevin Hart could be on cloud nine if he can pull off a high-flying heist operation in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming comedy-thriller Lift.
Landing on the streaming service on Jan. 12, F. Gary Gray’s feature centers on Cyrus Whitaker (Hart), the leader of an international heist team who gets enlisted to steal $500 million in gold from a mid-air passenger plane before the fortune ends up in the wrong hands. Lift co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno and Sam Worthington.
The trailer shows Hart explaining the near-impossible task to his cohorts and warning that they’ll land in prison if they don’t succeed. “Half a billion in gold is on its way to a terrorist cell,” he says. “We gotta steal it mid-flight, 40,000 feet in the air.”

Back in 2015, just as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was cementing his status as one of the world's biggest movie stars, the wrestler-turned-actor starred in the highly successful disaster flick "San Andreas." This was actually one of the movies that proved Johnson could help open a big blockbuster outside of a major franchise. He had earned the reputation of being "franchise Viagra" given what he was able to do for "Fast & Furious," "G.I. Joe," and other established properties.
"San Andreas" sees the infamous San Andreas Fault finally give, which triggers a massive magnitude 9 earthquake in California. Rescue helicopter pilot Raymond Gaines (Johnson) and his estranged wife must then make their way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their daughter. It was a huge success, taking in $474 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. That being the case, Warner Bros. was very quick to announce a squeal back in early 2016. But all these years later,...

If there is cinematic butt to be kicked, rest assured that Jason Statham will be at the front of the line. Since he burst onto the scene in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, he’s left a lot of broken bodies and wrecked cars in his wake. And when Expendables 4 rolls out on September 20, he will be nearing his 50th film, the lion’s share being unapologetic explosive action.
Statham makes movies with staying power. He’s made four Expendables films, three Transporters, two Mechanics (2011 and 2016), tw0 Cranks (2006 and 2009) and two Megs (2018 and 2023). Oh, yes, he also jumped into the Fast and Furious universe, making Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), Fast X (2023) and the spinoff Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (2019), teaming with Dwayne Johnson.
As a leading man, his films have delivered $1.8 billion worldwide, according to The Numbers.

“Ballers” becomes the second HBO title licensed from Warner Bros. Discovery to debut on Netflix after Issa Rae’s comedy “Insecure” premiered on the service in July. “Barbie” is the latest film to cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, a feat accomplished by only 52 other films in history. The oldest film on the list is Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” which didn’t crack the $1 billion mark until the film’s 20th anniversary re-release in 2013. The first film to ever crack $1 billion was James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic,” which still sits at #3 on the list with a whopping $2.2 billion. Cameron, of course, dominates the list with three films in the Top 5 including “Avatar,” still the highest-grossing film ever made.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has more films in the $1 billion club than any other franchise with 10, while Disney has more films on the list than any other studio with 24 thanks to Marvel, Pixar, “Star Wars” and Disney animation and live-action remakes.

Four years ago, Daniela Melchior came out of nowhere to land the highly coveted role of Cleo Caza/Ratcatcher 2 in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and upon the film’s release in August 2021, she immediately became the heart and soul of the superhero pic. “Fast X” predictably won a second weekend on top of the mainland China box office, driving its total past the $100 million mark. But the disappointing start for Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” was the bigger talking point.
“Fast X” earned $17.6 million in China according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That was a 66% drop compared with its opening weekend, but still gave the film a $110 million cumulative after 12 days and has caused estimates to be further revised upwards.
Ticketing agency Maoyan is now forecasting that the film will finish with RMB880 million ($126 million), having previously predicted RMB728 million ($104 million), and then RMB840 million.
That would make the film the top-scoring Hollywood title of the year (excluding 2022 release “Avatar: The Way of Water”). But the numbers are way down on past outings by the franchise.
To date, “Fast X” only ranks as the 49th best-performing Hollywood film in Chinese local currency terms.

There are really only two ways to become a successful action star. You can either come up through the ranks of the stunt world and hone your acting chops along the way, or start out as an actor first and mold yourself into a formidable fighter that's believable onscreen. Charlize Theron has done the latter, going from ingénue roles like "2 Days in the Valley" to an award-winning performance in "Monster" to instantly iconic action roles in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Atomic Blonde." Theron has clearly caught the bug for close combat brawls and complex fight choreography, and with the sequels "The Old Guard 2" and "Atomic Blonde 2" on the way, audiences are going to be watching her kicking, punching, and shooting her way through Hollywood for the foreseeable future.
Theron could probably go toe-to-toe with Keanu Reeves at this point, which is why it seemed a little...

Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise has reached a new milestone, spinning past $7B at the global box office. Getting there, it becomes the fifth series of films to pass the mark, doing so with 11 titles. It’s currently the No. 5 franchise of all time, and is tied with Warner Bros’ Wizarding World for the fewest number of movies to get to $7B in the Top 5.
Over the long course of the Toretto family saga which began in 2001, there has mostly been steady growth, particularly from 2009 through to the changeable pandemic era.
The split on all 11 movies, which includes Hobbs & Shaw, is $1.946B domestic, $5.083B overseas and $7.03B worldwide.
Meanwhile, Universal, including Focus titles, has edged the $1B mark at the domestic box office wirh $1,018B+ through Thursday. This is the quickest that Uni has gotten to $1B in North America in at least the past 10 years; it’s...

No one could have blamed Universal studio mogul Donna Langley and her team for wanting to take a joy ride when Fast X opened to $251.5 million overseas, the biggest international launch of 2023 to date, besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It set franchise records in key markets including Japan, India, Brazil and Indonesia. And it’s one of the few recent Hollywood movies to resonate in China, where it started off with $77.1 million.
The box office in North America is a different matter, where the car-racing franchise has been slowing down since the record-breaking start of 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. While the series has done most of its business overseas, domestic still matters.

The Fast Saga has always played loose with continuity. Perhaps more than any other modern franchise, "Fast & Furious" knows that continuity is not nearly as important as the rule of cool. Characters can come back from the dead at any time, events from the past are recontextualized on the regular to reveal new information only relevant now. Nothing is off limits, everything can change, and mistakes or irregularities don't matter as long as the now is cool and exciting.
In typical fashion for the franchise, "Fast X" brings back people we thought were dead — physically or metaphorically. Near the end of the movie, we see none other than Gal Gadot's Gisele, back from the dead, and apparently working for Cipher on her submarine. Then there's the actual credits scene, which arguably pulls off the biggest magic trick the franchise has...

Let’s race! The Fast & Furious movies have been pleasing audiences since they first appeared on the big-screen back in 2001 with stakes being raised film after film. A series of movies that started with a simple street-racing premise has catapulted into one of the largest film franchises in cinema history and seemingly won’t be stopped. The 11th film in the franchise, Fast X, raced into theaters this past week, blowing away box office and critical expectations and proving that audiences aren’t done with the Toretto family just yet.
Despite the film leaving audiences with several cliff-hangers, and the announcement that another film will follow the next one despite rumors that it would be the last, it’s only human nature to want to compare the movie to all of it’s predecessors. After all, with franchises as large as the Fast Saga, there will never be a...

Back in 2001, when the first movie of the Fast franchise, The Fast and the Furious, hit theaters, hardly anyone could have predicted that a simple story revolving around a cat-and-mouse game between a bunch of street racers/DVD player hijackers and a bright-eyed rookie cop would generate a multibillion-dollar-earning franchise a decade down the line. But here we are all these years later, with ten movies released as part of three trilogies and the first chapter of the upcoming trilogy, Fast X, already raking in big numbers at the box office. While the NoS-pumped physical law-defying campy fun doesn’t seem to be restrained by brakes or clutches, the makers have charted out the ending of the franchise, and the aftermath of Fast X has provided enough hints that will help viewers assess what the final lap will look like. We would like to discuss it briefly, thereby joining the...

Despite its immense production and marketing budget, Universal’s “Fast X” may be able to turn a profit after all. If it does, it will have the enduring international appeal of the “Fast & Furious” franchise to thank for that.
In the U.S., “Fast & Furious” is continuing its decline from a mid-2010s peak with a $67 million opening for “Fast X,” a launch below the $70 million that the tentpole’s predecessor “F9” earned during the early stages of the box office’s Covid recovery in June 2021.
But overseas grosses were a different story, with a $251.5 million total from 84 markets, including $78 million from China. That such a result would be seen as a positive despite being 42.5% down from the $136 million Chinese opening of “F9” shows how far Hollywood’s fortunes in that country have fallen. Yet “Fast X” nonetheless has the best Chinese opening of any Hollywood film so far this year.

While Dom may be the face of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, Brian O'Conner was its heart and soul. From the very first movie, Brian was our way into the world of racing: He was the protagonist we followed, the baby-faced hero who defied orders and chose family over duty, letting Dom escape in the movie's final moments. When Vin Diesel refused to do a sequel, Brian was in the spotlight in "2 Fast 2 Furious," which still holds up remarkably well without Diesel, especially compared to how these films hold up when Brian is absent.
Even when the whole family reunited in "Fast Five" and we got more characters than ever, Brian continued to be an essential part of the team, serving as a counterpart to Dom. He was the former cop who knew how to catch criminals, and who kept the franchise grounded while Dom slowly became a borderline superhuman comic book character.

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
Come what may in the future, the main series of "Fast & Furious" is coming to an end, with "Fast X" now in theaters. It's been billed from the start as a two-part finale to the Fast Saga, with "Fast & Furious 11" teed up by the film's cliffhanger ending. As for what's to come in the presumed finale (assuming it doesn't actually become a trilogy)? That remains uncertain, but for those who have seen the movie, we know a couple of things for sure. 1) Dom and the gang have unfinished business with Jason Momoa's Dante. 2) The Rock is returning as Luke Hobbs to finish his business with the franchise's new big baddie.
In a mid-credits scene attached to "Fast X," we see a masked man wandering some sort of warehouse set up by Dante — the son of Herman Reyes, the main villain...

The summer moviegoing season is officially upon us now that "Fast X" brought the "Fast & Furious" franchise back to the big screen, with this latest entry serving as the beginning of the end for Dom and the Fast Family. And given the movie's performance in theaters on its opening weekend, it seems like that's probably in Universal's best interests. We'll get into the "why" in a moment but, first, let's break down the numbers, shall we?
"Fast X" made a lot of money, taking in a decent $67.5 million domestically, but a massive $251.3 million internationally, per The Numbers. That ranks as the second-biggest global debut for 2023 to date, just behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which was also released by Universal Pictures. On that note, "Mario" added another $9.8 million domestically this weekend ($1.23 billion worldwide). Somewhat amazingly, director Louis Leterrier's "Fast" flick made even more in China than it did in North America,...
