Stars: Matthew Gray Gubler, AnnaLynne McCord, Alisha Boe, Sheila Vand, Sam Eidson | Written and Directed by Trent Haaga
Seemingly inhabiting the same universe as Cheap Thrills, the film he co-wrote with David Chirchirillo, 68 Kill, Trent Haaga’s second feature as director (his first being Chop) is a similar deep-dive into the fringes of American society – an underbelly that walks the fine line between morality and depravity. A world where people will do anything for money. Or so it would seem.
Trailer-dwelling, sewage-pumping Chip (Matthew Gray Gubler) may not lead the most glamorous life, but he’s got one thing going for him: he’s head over heels infatuated with his girlfriend Liza (AnnaLynne McCord). He’s more than willing to overlook her wild streak, the fact that she’s hooking up with their landlord and her rather extreme mood swings. So when she proposes a plot to steal $68,000, he goes along with the plan.

Trent Haaga has spent more than 15 years establishing himself in the realm of indie filmmaking. An esteemed graduate of Troma University, where he got his start as the writer on Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger 4, Haaga also penned Deadgirl and Cheap Thrills (and numerous other projects), and has made appearances in over 50 films to date. While Chop, a 2011 micro-budget horror comedy that has been grossly overlooked, may have been Haaga’s first-ever time in the director’s seat, it’s with his follow-up effort, 68 Kill, that he cements himself as a filmmaking force of nature who continues to build a strong foundation as a purveyor of cult cinema.

Oh, 68 Kill features a psychotic AnnaLynne McCord seducing and shit-kicking her way through country-fried thrills? Why yes, this is exactly my kind of midnight carnage. Wait, it gets better? You bet! This dark comedy marks Trent Haaga’s directorial follow-up to Chop (also co-wrote Cheap Thrills/Deadgirl), and 68 Kill only furthers his catalog of gleeful nastiness. Femininity and masculinity clash in a bumbling Bonnie and Clyde reimagining, with a dash of Tarantino unpredictability. It’s a raucous closing-time nightcap that runs on perfume and blood-soaked booty shorts, because what man wouldn’t kill for Ms. McCord? Brilliant casting, Mr. Haaga. Novelist Bryan Smith should be proud of this adaptation.
Matthew Gray Gubler stars as Chip, the love-struck boyfriend of white-trash vixen Liza (AnnaLynne McCord). She’s the talk of the trailer park. Everyone wants her, but Chip is the lucky guy she goes home with – when not sexing landlords in lieu of late rent.

68 Kill is a straight whiskey flick with a whiskey chaser. Trent Haaga (writer, director) is not playing about when it comes to his characters. They’re wild, authentic, and painfully mean. For all intents, he’s made a female exploitation film but gender-swapped nearly all the characters. It’s a story about two victims of abuse trying to find their way in life. Well, trying to find their way to $68,000 and then, maybe, life. There’s a lot more than surface level violence for fun’s sake going on here. Between 2001 and 2006, Endemol USA produced the reality series Fear Factor for NBC. A brief 2011 revival notwithstanding, viewers haven't thought much about the stunt-based reality show in the past decade, but Endemol's digital division is looking to change that. As first noted by The Hollywood Reporter, it has released the first episode of a web series called Fear Factor Remix that mashes up clips from the TV show.
The creative force behind Fear Factor Remix is DJ Steve Porter, who is known for putting a musical spin on viral clips. His most popular video, which remixes the Slap Chop infomercial, has been viewed more than 15 million times since its release in 2009.
For Endemol's web series, Porter cuts together Fear Factor clips based around a specific theme. The first episode, for example, is titled "The Taste In Your Mouth," and it focuses on the gross things Fear Factor contestants have been forced to eat over the years.

Since cancelling our cable subscription, at my house we are often at a loss for what to watch. We have every imaginable streaming service, but I feel like all of that variety makes it even harder to narrow down what we would like to watch. I’m often so bombarded with review copies of things that I seldom have a chance to watch what I “want” to watch in the first place, so wasting time choosing something on Netflix/Hulu/Hbogo/Amazon Instant is even more infuriating. Sometimes I wish somebody would just tell me what to watch. Please note that this is no kind of “Top” list. These movies are not ranked. This is just a list of 4 horror films currently on Netflix instant that I feel must be watched by fans of the genre. If you have any recommendations, please put them in the comments, or send me an email at Shawn@liberaldead.

The best horror films make you question your own values, psychologically forcing you to rationalize the unthinkable – for my money, at least. Slasher films about murderous dolls or angry undead groundskeepers possess their own kind of supernatural terror, but to this day, I still haven’t heard of a doll coming to life and slaughtering its owner. There’s a fantasy element that provides safety, unlike a movie such as Cheap Thrills, an unnerving presentation of man’s biggest folly – ourselves. People are vile, greedy, self-obsessed beings who react based on survival instincts when backed into a corner, forgetting moral normals like loyalty, compassion, and civility – but of course we chose to believe otherwise. Such silly, ignorant, naive souls we are.

All filmed content ends up on the Internet.
Whether it’s twenty seconds long or three hours, shot on a Red digital camera, Go Pro or a 16mm film camera, or viewed on a desktop computer, laptop, cell phone, AppleTV, a Kindle, or whatever — movies, music videos, TV shows, web videos are blasting their way across the Internet right this very second and being viewed by somebody somewhere in some location.
It’s a watchable entertainment overload!
Which is a great thing. More choices means more people can find videos that are specifically tailored to their individual taste and viewing habits.
The Internet has forced all transmittable moving image formats onto a level playing field. As consumers, we can now watch just about anything anywhere — granted, of course, that you’re either signed up with five different subscription services or are a devoted Internet pirate. But, that’s another story.

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

Revenge is a dish best served cold … and sometimes without even knowing what the entrée is. In Chop, Will Keenan stars as a man being tortured — both psychologically and physically — by a mysterious stranger (Timothy Muskatell) who claims Keenan wronged him in the past, despite Keenan’s insistence that he simply doesn’t remember the dude. With no apologies forthcoming, Keenan is ordered to first dispatch certain family members, then pieces of his own body in Trent Haaga’s bloody horror comedy.
Chop is Haaga’s directing debut and, made in 2011, still his only directing credit. Also an actor, Haaga first worked with Keenan on the set of a pair of Troma films, Terror Firmer and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. They learned well under sensei Lloyd Kaufman with Chop being reasonably described as Troma-lite with a fun manic and absurdist tone with some fairly gory sequences.

Fetch this! It's that time again. Time for the return of Doctor Gash to the screening room to host Dread Central's presentation of American Maniacs on Constellation.tv on Friday, April 20th at 10 Pm Et/7 Pm Pt.
American Maniacs was written by Trent Haaga, who also penned horror favorites Deadgirl and Chop. The film was directed by Cm Downs and stars Ashlynn Yennie of The Human Centipede series. It's the most recent film in the Doctor Gash hosted Dread Central film series on Constellation.tv.
Past screenings in the series have included the thriller Absentia and the documentary Cropsey, but this time we're going for the throat with this brutal number. Certainly not for the faint of heart, if you have any doubts as to whether or not you can handle this film, you probably can't.
To participate in the event, just head over to Constellation.tv and set up a free account.

Denver Underground Film Festival
The Denver Underground Film Festival is changing things up a bit this year, namely moving its screening dates up a few months. The fest will run May 18-20 instead of its usual late autumn / early winter dates.
This is also a short films only festival, accepting movies that are 30 minutes or less. But, they are looking for short films in all applicable genres and breaking things into these categories: Narrative, Experimental, Animated, Documentary and Music Video.
To get an idea of the kinds of films they like, it’s probably best to check out last year’s list of award winners, which comes with general descriptions of why they won. You can also look at last year’s full lineup here.
Since the fest is running earlier than normal this year, here at Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, we’ve missed posting their Early Bird Deadline.

Yes! Bd Selects has done it again. As many of you already know, I am a huge supporter of the Bd Selects (Bloody Disgusting) series. I do not care about the site itself, but I do care about the film division and what they have been doing for horror; without them, we would not have The Woman (so stop yelling). I have seen just about every film Bd Selects has put out and I am constantly waiting to see what they will release next. Chop was slated for their project and I met the news with lukewarm feelings. The apathetic status came from hearing that it was going to be a horror-comedy, and even though it is directed by the writer of Deadgirl, I was still a bit uneasy. Horror comedies have a way with going south, more often than not, hence my reservations. Deadgirl ranks high in recent horror films that I adore,...

The horror-comedy. Perhaps the most difficult sub-genre of film to perfect. Most attempts at horror-comedy don't come off well. Either they're too scary without enough comedy or (more frequently) mostly humor with not enough horror. A lot of times they just come across as trying too hard and cheesy. But every once in a while a movie gets it just right. And when that happens, audiences embrace and celebrate the brilliant and elusive successful horror-comedy.
That being said, in celebration of the upcoming release of Trent Haaga's Chop, we did our best to put together a list of 10 horror-comedies (in no particular order) that we feel are the most impressive efforts in the field. Wocka, wocka, wocka!

About three weeks ago, I wrote an article announcing Shadowlocked's involvement in this year's Telluride Horror Show and my role as 'Master Host'. Some of you have been wondering what films will be on tap for those in attendance, and lemme tell ya, there are some real doozies. Whether their horror tastes lie with the moody and atmospheric or with over the top fountains of gore, fright fans will find that the Horror Show has something for everyone this year.
Back by popular demand is the extremely popular horror/comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of last year's Horror Show crown jewels returning for a repeat performance. Also on tap is The Tunnel, an Australian horror in the 'found footage' genre. Director Carlo Ledesma and producers Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey will be in attendance. Making their United States debuts are shoot-o-rama The Scarlet Worm and tournament-style gorefest Monster Brawl.

When it comes to selecting which movies you are going to put in your film festival, some organizers are better than others. Judging by the announcement of first wave of films to be screened at the Second Annual Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado, these guys know their shit!
With a schedule that will boast over 20 features and 20 shorts, this is just the beginning, but I'm impressed already…Chillerama, Helldriver, a killer baseball pitcher film And Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Yeah, I'm impressed.
And not only are you getting a killer film line-up, Telluride itself is amazing! A former silver mining town set in a box canyon in southwest Colorado, it's the perfect Shining-esque, Overlook Hotel setting for a horror film festival. To-Hell-You-Ride, Colorado. Oh yeah!
I know it's a full schedule when the ol' carpel tunnel syndrome starts acting up while I write and format the film list.

For their 5th annual event, which is set to run Sept. 8-11, the Sydney Underground Film Festival is looking a little more demented than ever. And that’s saying a lot for this scrappy, still relatively young fest, which typically offers ample twisted cinematic offerings.
The fun kicks off with the Opening Night film, the demented superhero comedy Super, written and directed by former Troma go-to screenwriter James Gunn (Tromeo & Juliet); then ends with the Closing Night wallowing in Sydney’s seedy underbelly, X, by homegrown filmmaker Jon Hewitt.
Crammed between these two excursions into violence and depravity is a lineup filled with perverse visions, scandalous public figures, sickening horror, experimental pop culture remixes and more.
For Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, the highlight of the fest is Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane, a complex psychological, psychosexual, spiritual morality play about a Muslim sex worker who endures a “reverse...

The 2011 Fantasia Film Festival is in full swing up in Montreal, Canada, and of course Trembles is on the scene. One of the fest's devilish delights, Trent Haaga's feature-length directorial debut Chop, is the subject of this week's Motion Picture Purgatory. Read on for the full review!
Synopsis: Lance (Will Keenan) has seen better days. His half-brother’s car has died, leaving Lance stranded in the middle of nowhere. After numerous tries, he finally manages to flag down a ride. The driver seems sympathetic enough, initially, if a bit odd. Conversation stalls after the formalities, until the driver hits Lance with the question, “Whose life would you save, your wife or your half-brother?” After a momentary pause, Lance decides to play the game without too much further thought and chooses, obviously, his wife. Next thing he knows, he’s on the receiving end of a tranquilizer-dart gun. Lance awakes to find an axe,...

My apologies to all the Ontarians out there, but your province is boring. Eastern Quebec is refreshingly green, vibrant and interesting . It's as if nature decided it wanted more space, and tried to ruin our highway roads in order to expand (all right, so our roads are shit, and it's the government's fault, sue me). Once you make your way to the Ontario border, the trees begin to look depressed, the concrete roads are bigger, and you try not to fall asleep. Finally, once you've reached Toronto, you're relieved but too tired and sleepy to enjoy it. This is exactly how I felt watching Chop, from first time director Trent Haaga, who's appeared in more terrible B-movie horror films than I care to mention (although Dr. Horror's Erotic House of Idiots seems like something I'd pick up on a slow Friday night) but largely fails at making his own.

We have some very exciting news as Bloody Disgusting Selects is proud to announce the acquisition of Chop, the directorial debut of Deadgirl screenwriter and Troma alumni Trent Haaga, for VOD and DVD later this year! I caught the film back in February and Loved it. Here's what I had to say: " 'Chop' delivers on all sides by jam-packing the movie with laughs, gore and some insane twists that are guaranteed to get the room in a buzz...you owe it to yourself to watch this with a group of friends so you can all chatter about how f*cked it truly is." The pic, which carries a finale you have to see to believe, is "a revenge thriller with a comedic edge that centers on a seemingly innocent young couple, forced by a psychotic stranger to confront their duplicitous past."...

The 13th annual Boston Underground Film Festival has handed out their Bacchus Awards and the big winner of the fest is filmmaker Usama Alshaibi, who took home the Best of Fest Feature for his film Profane. What makes this an even sweeter win is that the film’s Buff screening on March 26 was its North American Premiere.
If you want to catch Profane again, it has a repeat screening on March 29. You can actually catch many of the winners at repeat Buff screenings all this week until the 31st. The full festival schedule is on Bad Lit here.
Another big winner of the 13th Buff was Matthew Garrett‘s disturbing short film Beating Hearts, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film just a few weeks ago. Also, Jason Eisener‘s much anticipated feature film Hobo With a Shotgun, starring Rutger Hauer took home the Audience Award.

Trent Haaga's resume as a filmmaker includes acting (lot's of it), writing, producing, directing and few other odd jobs along his journey. Gigs include the Killjoy movies from Full Moon in which he plays the evil demon clown Killjoy, he has been invloved in a Toxic Avenger movie from Troma and he has written what has become a cult classic in its very short life span, I'm talking about Dead Girl which gave Jenny Spain her break out role and if you haven't seen this cool movie I recommend you do so. I got with Trent about his current projects and the rumors going around about a sequel to Dead Girl, oh it's real all right! Check out my latest Versus to learn more about filmmaker Trent Haaga.
Brian S- Hey Trent, first off congratulations on the popularity that Dead Girl has gotten and it just keeps on making its way to cult status.
