Sex & Nudity

  • Occasional sexual dialogue.
  • References to dildos
  • A man wakes up to hear a man and a woman having sex. Loud, passionate moaning can be heard. Nothing is shown. Curious to know the extent of their vigorous lovemaking, he walks up to their room. Suddenly, he is greeted by another man, who is completely naked. But only the man's upper body, as well as a small portion of his crotch, is shown.
  • A woman makes some crude references
  • There is a short, stylized, slow-motion montage of two people having sex. The camera flies around them artificially and the image is somewhat blurry. The woman's breasts are visible and we hear her moaning.
  • Moaning noises are heard coming from the theater.
  • A brief splice picture of a penis is shown near the end.
  • A woman grabs a man's balls briefly
  • A dildo is bumped and shown moving
  • After the narrator says "let me tell you about Tyler Durden" a photo of a penis briefly comes up, it is blurry for a moment but then it becomes clear. This last for less than 5 seconds.

Violence & Gore

  • A man repeatedly punches another man, but the latter laughs psychotically with each punch. The man later jumps on the other man, continuing to laugh wildly while spraying and coughing up blood on him.
  • About 15 scenes of men involved in bare-fisted boxing matches: they punch each other in the face, ears and stomach and are sometimes thrown to the ground or against a wall; often they're surrounded by a group of cheering men. The participants in these fights nearly always have at least one very bloody facial cut or have blood on their clothing; we see many men with black eyes, bruised faces, bloody mouths and bandages on their faces.
  • A man has a fantasy of a midair collision where we see an airplane's cabin destroyed and people and seats being sucked out of what's left.
  • To intimidate his boss, a man starts punching and flailing himself across his boss' office (and breaking a glass coffee table and some shelving units with his body in the process). We see shards of glass puncture his arm along with blood on his shirt. He then walks away.
  • A man goes to a parking garage and defuses a bomb in a van, then the other man kicks him in the face and pushes him out of the van, the man has a gun and shoots near him. That man is then thrown against a ticket booth and a car, dragged, delivered a few blows and then thrown down a staircase and kicked;
  • A man's forehead is stitched after a fight (we don't see the wound, but we see the doctor's hand sewing it up).
  • A man purposefully drives down the wrong side of the road and into oncoming traffic to prove his lack of fear and scare the others with him. He then drives faster and without holding onto the steering wheel, causing the car to crash into another car that's pulled over to the side. As a result, both roll over an embankment, injuring everyone inside.
  • Extremely brutal, bloody and disturbing fist-fight scenes throughout. They're very graphic, savage and realistic, and are more than enough to discourage anyone from beating up people.

Profanity

  • 79 uses of "fuck."
  • More than a dozen uses of "shit."
  • "Damn" is said.
  • "Ass" is said.
  • "Goddamn" is said several times.
  • "Titties" is said.
  • Several uses of "bitch-tits" (referring to a man).
  • Occasional sexual dialogue.
  • 1 use of "cock" and 5 uses of "balls."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman threatens suicide by overdosing on Xanax.
  • A bottle of pills is seen a few times.
  • Vodka and beer drinking.
  • There is smoking throughout the whole movie.
  • Several scenes take place in and around bars.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The whole film is extremely disturbing and psychologically crazy, as it depicts men engaging in acts of urban vandalism, fighting each other and doing other barbaric things in order to achieve their masculinity, whereas the Narrator (Edward Norton's character) slowly becomes increasingly insane as his inner demons begin to control him. This is all very unnerving and thought-provoking, but the film overall has a darkly comedic and satirical tone.
  • The movie gets intense several times, quite stressing and pressuring.
  • The men in the fight club go through lots of brutal pain.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A man's face is beaten to a bloody pulp. He struggles to breathe afterwards. This is extremely brutal and it's all shown in really close-up and slow-motion. Afterwards we later see that man with his mutilated face almost unrecognizable.
  • A group of men ambush a man whom a man beats to the ground, the men wear ski masks and hold him hostage, pulling down his pants and duct-taping his mouth shut. They threaten to castrate him and he passes out from shock.
  • A man kisses/licks another's hand (to make it wet) and then pours lye on it, creating a chemical burn as a test of strength and slaps him repeatedly as he screams and writhes in pain. The skin starts to blister really bad and partly melts away. This is pretty graphic and the camera lingers on the injury for a while.
  • A man shoots himself through the cheek. Lots of blood and smoke then gushes out from the wound and down his neck as he is seen thrashing. Another man is seen with a graphic and gory bullet hole on the back of his head and he collapses, dead.
  • An explosion sets free a large corporate logo ball that then crashes into a coffee shop. As the perpetrators run away, we see a cop shooting at them (and he hits one in the head -- the impact isn't seen, although we do see the gory aftermath). The dead body lays on a table, dead as he bleeds out from the back of his head. The top half of his head is missing and blood and brains spill out. Brief but very graphic.
  • Tyler Durden get in a fight with another man. Eventually it gets pretty brutal and bloody.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A man's face is beaten to a near unrecognizable pulp. In the unrated version, a brief shot of his mouth is seen, with a lot of teeth missing. Very brutal and disturbing.
