Coming from the writer of recent slow-burn horror The Wind, the slightly oddly-titled Lovely, Dark and Deep, tells the story of a park ranger looking for answers from a childhood tragedy while she walks alone through the wilderness.
I guess it should be no surprise that this movie could also be called a slow burner but don’t go thinking that this means the first half or more of the film is boring or that nothing of note happens. Because Lovely, Dark and Deep grabs its viewers right from the start. But, there’s no doubt that the pace picks up towards the climax of the film and the movie leans more into horror the longer it goes on.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
I love going to the movies every year, but I really loved going to the movies this year. I saw Knock at the Cabin in Providence, I saw May December in Tallinn. I saw Enys Men in a small theater at Village East where it felt like everyone in the audience turned against the film but me. Somehow I liked Equalizer 3 despite loathing the other two. The worst movie I saw in theaters was Fast X, which I watched on an edible that put me to sleep during a set piece. I missed out on seeing Magic Mike’s Last Dance with some friends who wound up running into Christopher Nolan going to see Skinamarink. I loved breaking Yom Kippur fast during The Beast (out next year—I...

In 1989, with a budget of a quarter-million dollars, Whit Stillman couldn’t afford to make a true period piece, which is why Metropolitan is vaguely set “not so long ago.” This phrase, tinged with the melancholy that imbues the film, also serves as the title for a modest new companion to Stillman’s career, Whit Stillman: Not So Long Ago, which features a long interview, critical essays by Serge Bozon, Charlotte Garson, Félix Rehm, and Beatrice Loayza, and a dossier of materials from the production of Metropolitan put together by Haden Guest.
Also included in the book are some of Stillman’s writings from various magazines (mostly book reviews), but anyone hoping for a fount of the filmmaker’s prose waiting to be discovered will be disappointed, as these brief pieces are mostly disposable. The real value of Not So Long Ago is found in the lengthy conversation between Stillman and the book’s editor,...

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel of the same title, Netflix released the survival thriller Bird Box in 2018, featuring Sandra Bullock in the lead role. This film explored the themes of complexities in human nature, grief and trauma acting as an evil force, and the relentless pursuit of survival. By portraying a nightmarish apocalypse, the film effectively highlights the inner demons faced by the protagonist. However, the spinoff movie Bird Box: Barcelona, which maintains a strong connection with its predecessor, introduced a touch of innovation to the storyline.
The core of Bird Box: Barcelona revolves around Sebastian (Mario Casas), a survivor who embarks on a harrowing journey of self-discovery, questioning whether he is destined to save or destroy humanity. The spinoff film presented an intriguing premise by depicting the global impact of the unseen and unknown entity in the film. The plot unfolded in the European setting of Barcelona, showcasing...

Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. So it comes as a surprise to realize that the original screen “Bird Box” arrived a full 14 months or so in advance of pandemic restrictions — becoming an early Netflix pop-culture phenomenon before lockdown made that sort of thing a regular occurrence. Susanne Bier’s film of Josh Malerman’s sci-fi horror novel was intriguing and suspenseful enough, even if its emphasis on psychological drama over thrills made for a somewhat unlikely breakout hit.
Inevitably, if belatedly, there’s now a follow-up — but not an adaptation of Malerman’s own print sequel, which continued the travails of the character played by Sandra Bullock. Instead, “Bird Box Barcelona” is a “parallel story” set on another continent entirely. Written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, whose prior genre efforts “The Last Days” (2013) and “Carriers” (2009) both had similar basic premises, it...

Plot: After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.
Review: Released eight months after John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box became a hit for Netflix. In the five years since Susanne Bier’s film debuted, author Josh Malerman has penned a sequel novel while a film follow-up has been in development. The first of multiple global spin-offs, Bird Box Barcelona continues the tale of supernatural entities that force people to commit grisly suicide. Existing in the same post-apocalyptic universe as the Sandra Bullock-led hit film, Bird Box Barcelona manages to weave a distinct story while unveiling new details about the monstrous beings by taking the story in an unexpected direction.

The latest teaser for the Spanish-language spinoff movie picks up after a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, and a blindfolded father, Sebastian, played by Mario Casas, protects his daughter and joins Barbarian breakout star Georgina Campbell as they look to escape from demonic entities in a dark, sightless world set in Barcelona.
“There are worse things than the creatures… these creatures, they are changing,” Sebastian is told in the trailer as the dramatic stakes escalate as he must navigate the desolate streets of Barcelona to survive, only for an unexpected and even more sinister threat to grow.

While the post-apocalyptic film subgenre seems to focus on the world after a catastrophic event (thus “post”), some of the best scenes in those films are when you get to see the tension and suspense of watching the world descend into panic. And apparently, Netflix has focused on that time when crafting the new “Bird Box” spinoff film, ‘Barcelona.’

For many marginalized communities, the act of racial passing stirs up uncomfortable questions. But for Rebecca Hall, it was the answer to a lingering family mystery. Hall, who you may recognize from "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" or "Iron Man 3," is the daughter of the very-British Sir Peter Hall and the American opera singer Maria Ewing. While her father had the privilege of a well-documented family line, it was more complicated on her mother's side. The actress recalls asking her mother about her ethnicity, but Ewing never had a straight answer. "Sometimes she would intimate that maybe there was African American ancestry," Hall told the New...

With the recent Broadway cancellations and Omicron knocking New York City for a holiday loop, it’s easy to forget that Broadway’s fall season was, artistically speaking, stellar, with a slate of excellent new shows opening, some fine holdovers from pre-shutdown days returning and significant strides made in the representation of Black theater artists.

Mort Rifkin, the ostensible novelist at the center of “Rifkin’s Festival,” has longterm writer’s block, and it’s hard to imagine that Woody Allen has ever empathized less with a character. Where Mort believes it’s futile to write if the finished work is not going to be on the level of Dostoevsky, the 84-year-old Allen continues churning out screenplays on an annual basis, unencumbered even by the increasingly distant memory of his own greatest work. His 49th feature, “Rifkin’s Festival” is the latest in a lengthy string of undistinguished bagatelles that might all be described as effortless, and not in an especially complimentary fashion.
Following Wallace Shawn and a typically jumbled grab-bag of fine actors as they mosey around the San Sebastián Film Festival — for which the film acts as an extended promo, duly opening this year’s edition — “Rifkin’s Festival” is a scenic summer-wind romcom that...

Mira Sorvino in MIghty Aphrodite (1995)
After interviewing Mira Sorvino about her new projects, the Emmy hopeful Hollywood and two recent indies, our conversation drifted back over her whole career.
For fun, we asked her to program her own mini three or four film retrospective by naming her favourite projects. She acknowledged immediately that Mighty Aphrodite (1995) would be selected for any retrospective since it was her Oscar-winning role, but she wanted to shine the light on lesser-known titles. "I fall in love with every project," she noted, as that three or four film group kept growing and becam eight titles in our conversation. She might have changed the list on another day but here were the titles she hoped people would rediscover or see for the first time that she's very fond of. How many how these have you seen?

Stars: Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Liev Schreiber, Selina Gomez, Diego Luna, Jude Law | Written and Directed by Woody Allen
Woody Allen can be hit-and-miss these days. He’s a great writer and director. We all know that, with films like Manhattan; Annie Hall; Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona and my favourite of his films, Midnight in Paris, he has the ability to create some magical human stories when he wants to. Even fairly recently, with Blue Jasmine, he’s knocked it out of Yankee Stadium. Now, personal opinions of Allen aside, he’s created some wonderful films over the years, and so I was intrigued by his most recent one, A Rainy Day in New York.

A cast featuring the very-talented Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Liev Schreiber, Selina Gomez, Diego Luna and Jude Law, this is the story of a young couple, Gatsby (Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Fanning) who head to Manhattan when...

The incomparable Chris Eigeman is probably best known for the three films he made with Whit Stillman—Metropolitan (which was his very first film), Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco. The singular style of performance he delivered in those films led to great work with filmmakers and showrunners such as Noah Baumbach, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and John Frankenheimer. Lately he’s been writing and directing his own films. Rakuten TV has garnered 10 million views on its free on-demand service since its launch in October. The streamer’s CEO, Jacinto Roca, told Variety that, buoyed by the early Avod success, it will launch a suite of new channels and original shows on the ad-supported service in 2020. He added that he hopes the free service will notch a billion views next year as Rakuten TV ramps up.
“We launched less than two months ago and have had a million users and over 10 million views,” Roca said of the Avod platform, which is available in over 40 territories in Europe. “The first months have been better than expected.”
Making the “Matchday – Inside Fc Barcelona” original documentary series, about the legendary titular Spanish soccer club, available for free has been a key traffic driver for Rakuten TV, the streaming arm of Japan-based e-commerce giant Rakuten.
The plan now is to expand the existing roster of three channels.

“Almost Famous” did make perhaps more sense to translate from the big screen to a stage musical than some other films have because, for one thing (spoiler alert for anyone who’s been asleep at the switch for the last 19 years), it already has music in it — and it’s about musicians, or those who’d do anything keep their company, whether it’s in person or just in headphones. When it comes down to it, It’s not really a stretch for the characters to break into song, when they’re already spending their entire inner waking lives silently doing just that.
Still, it’s not a huge stretch to imagine some of Cameron Crowe’s other films transitioning to the stage, too. Surely “Show Me the Money” is a Broadway production number waiting to happen? Or, it wouldn’t be weird for some earnest young actor to carry...

Chicago Mc Mick Jenkins has always been something of a rap hermit, emerging when he feels ready and dropping sprawling projects of baritone philosophy and freeform wordplay. When he broke out in 2014 with the contemplative mixtape The Water (S), Jenkins seemed to exist outside of the general rap universe: he collaborated with a small roster of underground MCs while espousing at times sanctimonious views on self-improvement, the ills of society and the shallowness of other rappers. Jenkins’ voice–alternatively booming and restrained–sounded like some sort of doomsday robot’ aided by sparse,...

Javier Bardem is, once again, standing by the filmmaking prowess of Woody Allen.
According to Variety, the Oscar winner, 49, spoke about his career during a masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France, from learning English thanks to AC/DC to growing up in Spain and all he’d picked up at the hands of a range of directors, including the Coen Brothers and 82-year-old Allen.
The latter, who worked with Bardem on the 2008 film Vicky, Christina, Barcelona, has faced longstanding accusations of sexual abuse from his daughter Dylan, one of Allen’s three children with ex Mia Farrow.

Kudos to the Criterion Collection for releasing Whit Stillman’s charming trio of young adult angst: Metropolitan (1990), Barcelona (1994), and The Last Days of Disco (1998). The bookend films have both been previously released by Criterion on DVD and Blu-ray, but now the company bows Barcelona to complete the trilogy. Available as both a stand-alone disc as well as part of a set of the three films, Barcelona features the luminous Mira Sorvino in an early role.
The trilogy of films that Mr. Stillman made as the beginning of his career and for which he is most well-known are interesting in that they depict groups of people who fall out of the scope of most of the general population and probably appeal to even less. That is actually a welcome relief. Metropolitan was shot in January and February in 1989 and released in August 1990 (a curious choice for a film...

Mark and Aaron take a look at Whit Stillman’s Barcelona (1994), and how it compares with his other work. We focus most on his other two films from the 1990s, Metropolitan (1990) and Last Days of Disco (1998), but we also discuss his most recent effort, Love and Friendship.
About the film:
Whit Stillman followed his delightful indie breakthrough Metropolitan with another clever and garrulous comedy of manners, this one with a darker edge. A pair of preppy yet constitutionally mismatched American cousins—a salesman and a navy officer—argue about romance and politics while working in the beautiful Spanish city of the film’s title. Set during the eighties, Barcelona explores topics both heady (American exceptionalism, Cold War foreign policy) and hilarious (the ins and outs of international dating, the proper shaving method) while remaining a constantly witty delight, featuring a sharp young cast that includes Taylor Nichols, Chris Eigeman, and Mira Sorvino.

Chicago – Say the name Whit Stillman in certain cinema circles, and a rush of admiration soon follows. The director made a name for himself with his debut film “Metropolitan’ (1990), and followed with the same emotional pallette in “Barcelona” (1994). He is back with an adaptation of a Jane Austin novel, entitled “Love & Friendship.”
The title is taken from one of Jane Austin’s short stories, but the narrative is from her novel “Lady Susan,” published 60 years after her death. It involves the title character (portrayed in the film by Kate Beckinsale), a widow without fortune, who is looking to marry again to wealth, and wishes the same for her daughter. She visits the estate of her sister-in-law and brother-in-law – Charles and Catherine Vernon – in the hopes of making a match for her lovely child Frederica, or at least herself.

A Whit Stillman Trilogy: Metropolitan, Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco
Over the course of the 1990s, writer-director Whit Stillman made a trilogy of films about the acid tongues and broken hearts of some haplessly erudite young Americans in New York and abroad. Set in the eighties, these films trace the arc of that decade, led by Stillman’s Oscar-nominated debut, Metropolitan, which introduced moviegoers to a strange, endangered species of privileged New Yorker, the “urban haute bourgeoisie.

"Metropolitan" and "Barcelona" director Whit Stillman has reunited with his two "The Last Days of Disco" stars Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny for his fifth feature - the upcoming period drama "Love and Friendship".
An adaptation of Jane Austen's unpublished early novella 'Lady Susan' and set around eighteenth-century English society, the story focuses on the machinations of beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) who takes up temporary residence at her in-laws' estate.
While there she becomes a determined matchmaker for her daughter Frederica and herself too, enlisting the help of an old friend (Chloe Sevigny). Soon, two particularly handsome suitors (Xavier Samuel and Tom Bennett) complicate her orchestrations. Stephen Fry also stars in the Victorian-era comedy which opens May 13th.

Often described as the WASPy version of Woody Allen, filmmaker Whit Stillman (“Metropolitan,” “Barcelona”) has made a career out of sharp, witty observations of the urbane and affluent upper classes. But so far, all of his films have been largely contemporary, “The Last Days Of Disco” being his one “period” film that looked back on the same class and culture of (white) people in the late 1970s. But by and large, all of his films are of a piece: droll comedy-of-manners pictures with similar societal concerns and preoccupations. Read More: Sundance Review: Whit Stillman's 'Love & Friendship' Starring Kate Beckinsale & Chloe Sevigny But for his next film, “Love And Friendship,” Stillman will at least examine brittle social interplay from an entirely different era. Starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny, his two muses from ‘Disco,’ Stillman’s fifth film is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unpublished early novella “Lady Susan.

Ever since his indie breakout Metropolitan in 1990, Whit Stillman has built a specific kind of comedy within class structure. From the strait-laced businessmen struggling to break free of themselves in Barcelona to the ambitious, two-faced college girls in Damsels in Distress, Stillman finds the laughter in the deviousness of human nature.
Love & Friendship, his fifth film, premiered at Sundance and is set to be released by Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions this spring. Adapted from Jane Austen‘s little-read, barely-published novella ‘Lady Susan,’ the costume-drama setting and biting social commentary allows for some of the funniest moments in Stillman’s career. It’s as though Austen was writing for a filmmaker like Stillman to adapt her. It’s a true match made in heaven.
Check out conversation with the director from Sundance 2016 below.

"Has there ever been a purer match between author and adapter than Jane Austen and Whit Stillman?" asks Noel Murray at the Playlist. "Stillman’s first film, 1990’s Metropolitan, updated Austen’s explorations of social values and romantic ardor among the upper classes. Then, in the second and third parts of his 'earnest young yuppies in love' trilogy (1994’s Barcelona and 1998’s The Last Days of Disco), Stillman continued his consideration of how income, religious faith, and social pressure still play as much a part in guiding romantic decisions as they did in the 1800s. So when the news came out that the writer-director was making a big-screen version of Austen’s posthumously published novella Lady Susan, under the title Love & Friendship, could any fan of the filmmaker be surprised?" Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny reunite with director Whit Stillman for a witty adaptation of Jane Austen’s early novella Lady Susan
Whit Stillman, expert chronicler of privileged youth, adapts the Jane Austen novella Lady Susan for his first period film, Love & Friendship. The material is a perfect fit for the film-maker behind the elegant comedies Metropolitan, Barcelona and most recently, Damsels in Distress. His pantheon of highly literate heroines would be at home in Austen’s world of manners and unrequited passions.
