Ireland’s screen industry is having a moment. With the Cannes Film Festival well underway, there’s a notable strong Irish presence in this year’s line-up including Element Pictures’ three entrants – Competition title Kinds of Kindness from Yorgos Lanthimos, Rungano Nyoni’s sophomore feature On Becoming A Guinea Fowl and Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says (both in Un Certain Regard). There’s also Competition title The Apprentice, which is co-produced with Irish outfit Tailored Films and Lorcan Finnegan’s Nicolas Cage starrer The Surfer premiering in the Midnight Screenings strand. Even Andrea Arnold’s Competition title Bird is rich with Irish talent with star Barry Keoghan and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robbie Ryan both having worked on the film.

If you took a poll of movie lovers and asked for a list of the best actors of the past 50 years, Daniel Day-Lewis would certainly be among them -- he may even occupy the number one slot. The versatile performer has been wowing audiences with his all-in, committed performance style for decades, and legends are legion about the lengths to which he'll go to immerse himself in his characters.
But only one of his films has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and it's somewhat surprising: It's not "Gangs of New York," "My Left Foot," or even "In the Name of the Father," but 1985's "A Room With a View," directed by James Ivory. Set in the early 1900s, the film follows a young Englishwoman named Lucy (Helena Bonham Carter) and her chaperone (Maggie Smith) on a trip to Italy, where she ignites a brief relationship with a man (Julian Sands...

In the summer of 2017, Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis surprised Hollywood, London and the entire entertainment world when he revealed that he retired from acting and would make no more films. His final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Phantom Thread” (2017) brought Day-Lewis his sixth Oscar nomination, his eighth Golden Globe nom and his seventh BAFTA bid (losing all three to Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour”).
One of the most respected actors of his generation, Day-Lewis is the only man who has won three Oscars for Best Actor. Those victories were for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). In fact he is one of only three men to win acting Oscars three times; the others are Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson. In addition, he has won two Best Actor awards each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

When audiences seek movies based on brands, that usually means the likes of Marvel, DC Comics, and Pixar — not studios or distributors.
The exception is A24. It’s something acknowledged by its peers (however grudgingly) and among a growing section of younger cinephiles, for whom “an A24 movie” means something a little weird and potentially cool, maybe great — and reason to take a chance on going to a theater.
Alex Garland‘s “Civil War,” the company’s most expensive film (a reported $50 million) opens this week with tracking that suggests it could open to $20 million or more. That would top any previous A24 opening; its best is “Hereditary,” which opened to $13.5 million in 2018.
Garland’s film checks many of the boxes that have translated into A24’s success. Its director has a strong following, including prior A24 films “Ex Machina” and “Men.” “Civil War” also had a widely publicized festival premiere at SXSW last month.

Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.

Retired English actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors in cinema’s history. Although picky, the actor won numerous accolades throughout his career. Most of his performances, if not all, have been critically acclaimed. The proof of this fact is that he has three Academy Awards, making him the actor with the most Academy Awards for Best Actor.
Back to the part about him being picky, Day-Lewis has rejected roles in some great movies. For instance, he rejected the lead role in 1993’s Philadelphia and the role of the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.
Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot
Another such role that Day-Lewis reportedly rejected was Batman. Zack Snyder once approached the actor for a role in Man of Steel, and it was not until much later that he revealed which role it was.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

The Academy Award, popularly known as the Oscars, is the most prestigious award that someone from within the film fraternity can win. It is every actor’s dream to etch their name in the annals of film history, a recognition of their mastery over the art form that takes a significant amount of time to refine. Over the years, several actors have won the award, thus setting themselves apart from the rest. In this article, we will take a look at five such actors whose Oscar records will not be broken anytime soon.
The film industry has seen the rise and fall of actors. While not everyone can make it big, those who have managed to do so have left their mark forever.
It is worth noting that an Oscar alone does not determine one’s talent, as it is merely a reward for the work that they put in.

Ever since Daniel Day-Lewis made a rare appearance to present an award to Martin Scorsese, speculations have been spreading on the internet about his return to films with a Scorsese project. However, that dream may not happen anytime soon as one of the close friends of the actor has revealed that he is done with films. The revelation came from Day-Lewis’s My Left Foot director Jim Sheridan.

Scorsese is riding high this awards season as his latest film Killers of the Flower Moon is currently nominated for ten Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Martin Scorsese’s next film will be a spiritual movie on Jesus and rumors suggested that Day-Lewis may play the central role.

Daniel Day-Lewis will remain retired from acting, despite best efforts to lure him back. Apparently the actor is also most displeased with “streamers”.
We’ve known for a while that Daniel Day-Lewis, the actor known for roles in films like Phantom Thread, There Will Be Blood and Gangs Of New York, has retired from acting.
Just to be clear, nothing has changed on that front. In fact, we’ve simply got further confirmation that Day-Lewis is not looking to make a comeback of any sorts.
Director Jim Sheridan, speaking to ScreenDaily, said he still talks to Day-Lewis, but the actor isn’t interested in making another film.
“I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else, he opens up the streamers and there’s seven thousand choices, none of them are good. Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote,...

Despite Martin Scorsese teasing a possible collaboration with his “Gangs of New York” star Daniel Day-Lewis, the famed Oscar-winning Method actor is still firmly retired, according to director Jim Sheridan.
Sheridan worked with Day-Lewis on “My Left Foot,” “In the Name of the Father,” and “The Boxer,” with “My Left Foot” landing Day-Lewis one of his three Best Actor Academy Awards. Day-Lewis officially announced his retirement from acting in 2017 with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” as his last film.
“He says he’s done. I keep talking to him,” Sheridan told ScreenDaily. “I’d love to do something with him again. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something because he’s so good.”
You know what’s not “so good”? Streaming content — and that medium’s takeover has (further) soured the serious actor on the entertainment business, Sheridan said.

It sounds like Daniel Day-Lewis is serious about his retirement from acting and won’t be returning, at least according to his longtime director Jim Sheridan. The Irish filmmaker directed three of Day-Lewis’ most prominent films: “My Left Foot” (1989), “In the Name of the Father” (1993) and “The Boxer” (1997). Day-Lewis won the Oscar for best actor with “My Left Foot” and was also nominated for “In the Name of the Father.”

Jim Sheridan has dispelled rumors around a possible return to acting by Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the Irish director’s drama My Left Foot and also starred in his subsequent films In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer.
Rumors have been rife that Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, might be contemplating a return to the big screen after he was photographed by paparazzi coming out of a New York restaurant with Sheridan and Steven Spielberg in early January.
Sheridan said the trio had been holding a meeting about a possible reboot of his long-gestating project about the Kennedy family, focused on its social climber-patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor,” said Sheridan.

Hollywood has a long history of casting and awarding able-bodied actors to portray characters with disabilities. In the Oscars’ best actor category alone, there is Daniel Day-Lewis for My Left Foot, Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, Colin Firth for The King’s Speech and Jamie Foxx for Ray. In the history of the Academy Awards, only three disabled actors have been awarded a best performance trophy for portraying a character who has their disability.
Director Aaron Schimberg notes that onscreen portrayals of people with disfigurements, as seen in his latest film A Different Man, are still largely played by able-bodied people in prosthetics. “On the other hand,” he continues, “When I’ve cast actors with disfigurements, people have called that exploitative, which seems to run counter to this whole discussion about representation that we’re having.” For his newest film, he wanted to interrogate the complexities of that sometimes counterproductive conversation.

Upscale crossover sales agent Latido Films has acquired international sales rights to “Re-creation,” directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, whose “In the Name of the Father” won a Berlin Golden Bear in 1994.
Starring Vicky Krieps, a Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner for “Corsage,” the docu-drama is co-written and co-directed by Irish artist and filmmaker David Merriman (“Rock Against Homelessness”). It will be unveiled to buyers at the European Film Market.
Like Sheridan’s prior five-hour documentary, SkyCrime’s “Murder at the Cottage,” “Re-creation” turns on what the earlier title calls Ireland’s most shocking unresolved crime whose victim, French TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was battered to death at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.
A fiction/reality hybrid feature, “Re-creation” introduces a fictional jury, inspired by Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men,” which sifts through the facts, lies and convenient truths behind the murder, Sheridan told Variety.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis made a rare public appearance to present Martin Scorsese with an award for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon at the National Board of Review Gala in Manhattan on Thursday night.
Day-Lewis praised Scorsese for his vision and effort to create “enthralling” films.
“Martin’s work — with the light of his own making — he illuminated unknown worlds that pulsed with the dangerous, irresistible energy, worlds that were mysterious to me and utterly enthralling,” Day-Lewis said. “He illuminated the vast beautiful landscape of what is possible in film, and he clarified for me what it is that one must ask of oneself, to work in faith.”
Day-Lewis has appeared in two films directed by Scorsese. The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York.
“One of the greatest joys and most unexpected privileges of my life was to find myself one day working with him,” Day-Lewis said.

Daniel Day-Lewis has always been known for his method acting. For My Left Foot, in which he played a man with cerebral palsy, he wouldn’t leave his wheelchair and had people feed him. For Lincoln, he had cast and crew address him as Mr. President. And for Phantom Thread, we can only assume he actually ate poisonous mushrooms. So when he’s retired, you better believe he’s going to disappear. And that’s pretty much how it’s been, as the three-time Oscar winner has stayed off the radar. That is, until Thursday night, when he bestowed Martin Scorsese – who he has worked with twice – with the National Board of Review’s Best Director award. And with that came a tease for a hopeful third collaboration…

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis has shown his versatility as a performer in projects like My Left Foot and Phantom Thread. But one filmmaker noted there was one genre of film he didn’t think Day-Lewis was capable of mastering.
Daniel Day-Lewis couldn’t provide audiences with laughter according to this director Daniel Day-Lewis | Jim Spellman/WireImage
Day-Lewis is often known for playing tortured or traumatized characters in his movies. But he’s never really been seen in a more wholesome, positive light on the big screen. Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar noticed the lack of comedy features in the Oscar-winner’s filmography. Because of this, Almodovar put Day-Lewis in the same category as other veteran stars with very little humor in their film resumes like Marlon Brando.
“Brando, a comedy actor? No. And he tried it. He even sang and danced in Guys and Dolls, stiff as a board, but Brando was too self-aware.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis was treated like royalty on the set of his last film Phantom Thread. But this rubbed one of his co-stars the wrong way behind the scenes.

Day-Lewis found himself co-starring alongside the much younger Vicky Krieps in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Krieps ended up playing more than a love interest, and became a formidable romantic foil for Day-Lewis’ character. She didn’t do any extensive research on Day-Lewis before being cast in the film. This meant she knew very little about her co-star and his famous method acting.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Krieps remembered being put off by everyone accommodating the actor’s preferences. She also mocked the cast and crew’s seemingly unwarranted reaction to the actor.

Day-Lewis applied some of his well-known method acting for the 1992 picture Last of the Mohicans. The picture saw Day-Lewis portray a half-white Native American who was adopted by his tribe, and is unexpectedly thrust into the French and Indian War.
In his interview with The New York Times, some of the methods Day-Lewis used to prepare for the film was revealed. According to the publication, Day-Lewis would stand in a cold lake for fifteen minutes for the sake of his character. He also did a lot of running for the feature to maintain his role’s slim physique. But Mohicans also took a significant toll on the Oscar-winner.

David McCallum, the iconic actor who brought Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard to life on NCIS, has always been a cornerstone of the show. From its early days, McCallum made Ducky a fan-favorite character, even as his role evolved.
Surprisingly, McCallum’s most cherished episode dates back to the show’s first season, defying expectations that one of the later episodes might have captured his favor. With Branagh’s latest movie currently in theaters, let’s look back at his eight Oscar races and talk about how the actor-director finally won his first gold trophy just last year.
In early 2022, Branagh broke the record for nominations in the highest number of different categories at the Academy Awards. Of his eight Oscar mentions, he has competed in seven categories total — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay and Best Live Action Short Film. Leonardo DiCaprio has reaped an even dozen Oscar nominations for acting. His first bid was back in 1994 in Best Supporting Actor for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” After a gap of more than a decade (including being snubbed for “Titanic), he contended for Best Actor in 2005 for “The Aviator” and in 2007 for “Blood Diamond.” He then earned two nominations for Martin Scorsese‘s “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2014 as both producer and star. Two years later, he won Best Actor for “The Revenant.” Most recently he competed in lead in 2020 for Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Those five Best Actor nominations match the tallies of the likes of Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, Sean Penn, and James Stewart.

Plenty of acting stars have taken a break from the spotlight. They may cite family reasons, their own mental health, or a desire to enjoy some time off. For some, however, the reason is more acute. That was the case for Daniel Day-Lewis, a method actor who found the work on Phantom Thread to be overwhelming enough to walk away from the entire acting industry.

Vicky Krieps, best performance prize winner in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard for “Corsage,” will star as Sophie Toscan du Plantier in six time-Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan and David Merriman’s “Re-creation,” which is being presented in the Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The docu-drama, which centers on the brutal murder in 1996 in Ireland of French film and TV producer Toscan du Plantier, has been co-written and will be co-directed by Sheridan, best known for “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father,” and Merriman. The unsolved crime was previously the subject of Sheridan’s documentary series “Murder at the Cottage.”
Krieps garnered widespread acclaim with her breakthrough performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” in 2017. As well as the Cannes prize, her performance in last year’s “Corsage” also won her the European Film Award for best European actress.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is not exactly a stranger to doing stage work. But performing in front of a rude audience made the actor vow to never work with a particular theater company again.
Daniel Day-Lewis walked away from a film career with England’s Royal Shakespeare Company because of a rude audience Daniel Day-Lewis | Lars Niki/Getty Images
As is the case with many actors, Day-Lewis began making a name for himself on stage. The Lincoln star was acting in theaters since the age of 11. One of the reasons why he continued acting in plays was because no one discouraged him from his passion. If someone had, Day-Lewis might have ended up like many child actors.
“Everyone does it until a certain age, and then they think, or they’re encouraged by grownups to believe, that perhaps they should do something else. But no one ever said to me, ‘This is a bad idea.

With the ongoing Emmy decorated run of Disney’s “The Mandalorian,” “Star Wars” has reentered the awards circle. The hit drama series has garnered multiple nominations for its first two seasons both above and below the line. While it has won 14 Emmys to date, none of the actors has prevailed.
Another “Star Wars” series, “Andor,” could break that curse. The show is much more small-scaled than “Mando” and plays a lot closer to Emmy friendly political dramas of the past. The critical reception emphasises this aspect; the series has a stellar 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have warmed to it and the series holds an 8.4 IMDb rating.
Like many other genres hits, “Andor” will likely fare exceptionally below-the-line. But, the more prestige-leaning, politically charged vision of creator Tony Gilroy (Oscar nominee for both writing and directing) will help it pierce above-the-line categories. Nearly 10 years after his death, Peter O’Toole is making a return to the screen in a BritBox documentary from Jim Sheridan.
The revered Irish director, known for narrative films including “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father,” interviewed colleagues and family about the “Lawrence of Arabia” star for “Peter O’Toole: Along the Sky Road to Aqaba.” They range from Kenneth Branagh, Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, Derek Jacobi and Stephen Fry to ex-wife Siân Phillips and daughter Kate O’Toole. Each interview helps shed light on the actor’s complicated yet brilliant life and career.
O’Toole, who grew up in England with Irish heritage, was nominated for eight Oscars, winning an honorary Academy Award in 2003. The actor was also known for his stage work and fondness for alcohol.

Daniel Day-Lewis has long been called the greatest actor ever, but his talents deserve a far deeper consideration than that.
It's been almost six years since Daniel Day-Lewis retired from acting, and we still live in the shadow of his influence. The legendary actor, who turns 66 today, has the kind of reputation that 99% of his colleagues would kill for. After nearly 40 years on stage and screen, Day-Lewis earned the moniker of The Greatest Actor of All-Time from more than one publication. A Time cover story from 2012 declared him to be the "World's Greatest Actor" while a 2013 article in the Guardian said that he had "taken up residence in the Pantheon" of actorly genius alongside the likes of Laurence Olivier and Marlon Brando.
Choosing just one mere mortal to bear the weight of this honor is near impossible, but it is notable how often Day-Lewis's name comes up as a consensus pick of sorts.

Exclusive: Six-time Academy Award nominee Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) has inked a deal to co-write, direct and produce the historical drama I Am a Man: The True Story of Chief Standing Bear with Andrew Troy.
The film with formal Resolutions of Support from the Ponca Tribe will depict the Ponca’s “Trail of Tears” march that led to the 1879 landmark trial of Standing Bear vs. the United States of America. This mostly unknown legal case helped all Native Americans to be considered “human beings” under the law, also setting legal precedent for many future civil rights matters within the U.S. courts.
Troy has spent the last decade developing the project, while working to gain the support of U.S. and state officials and Native Americans alike. The filmmaker, who is part Chiricahua Apache, was in attendance in 2019 as leaders of the U.S. Congress hosted...

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of Hollywood’s most legendary actors. Known for his strict adherence to method acting and his intense onscreen persona, he has appeared in many acclaimed movies. Although he officially retired from acting in 2017, his work in the entertainment industry remains legendary. One of the most notable instances of Day-Lewis’ dedication came in the 1989 drama My Left Foot. Reportedly, he insisted on being carried to and from the set in order to preserve his integrity to the method.

Actor Daniel-Day Lewis often goes through great preparations to embody a film role. But there was a moment when his method-acting raised a few concerns about his performance.

Day-Lewis is widely seen as one of cinema’s greatest and most dedicated actors. But what has fascinated many about the actor’s performances has been his method acting. Day-Lewis has been known to live and breathe his characters even when he isn’t filming to do his roles justice.
Phantom Thread, for instance, saw Day-Lewis making dresses from scratch to further understand his onscreen role as a dressmaker. The 2005 movie The Ballad of Jack and Rose saw Day-Lewis playing an isolated environmentalist. Because of this, the actor lived separately from his own real-life family for the role. The stories of Day-Lewis’ method...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”). Butler (69/20) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Fraser (71/20), Farrell (4/1), Nighy (9/2), and Mescal (9/2).
Last year’s lead male lineup was the first since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees, but this is the first since 1935 to consist of nothing but newcomers. The last time a group of Best Actor contenders were all strictly new to the category itself was 2006, when the only general veteran in the bunch was past supporting nominee (for “Gladiator”) Joaquin Phoenix (“Walk the Line”). Any of the current hopefuls would be the first total Oscars newcomer to take this prize since Rami Malek.
Since Nighy is English and both Farrell and Mescal are Irish, this is the third Best Actor roster in six years to...
