Throughout the 1950s, big-budget musicals were de rigueur for Hollywood, and there was a sudden glut of epics that sported gigantic budgets, recognizable stars, and no small amount of studio hype. Such films were exhibited as touring roadshow productions, which was a great way for films to make fistfuls of cash. Roadshow epics were also, it should be noted, a concerted ploy by studios to distract audiences from the rising threat of television. Studios felt the need to invest a lot of money into musicals and epics, hoping the massive productions could draw people into theaters and keep the industry afloat.
One might logically predict, however, that Hollywood tried to ride the trend of epics for a little longer than was healthy, and foolish overspending eventually became common. The age of the "roadshow epic" pretty much came to a close with the release of the notorious bomb "Cleopatra" in 1963.

When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

In the "Star Trek" episode "Metamorphosis", an important dignitary named Commissioner Nancy Hedford (Elinor Donohue) is being transported to the U.S.S. Enterprise to undergo a complex medical procedure that can only be performed on the ship. She is afflicted with a fast-moving condition called Sukaro's Disease which, if not treated, could prove fatal within a few days, even though Commissioner Hedford has no discernible symptoms. Unfortunately for her, Hedford's shuttle is randomly attacked by a shape-shifting blob of energy and pulled down to the surface of a nearby planet. Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) have to find a way to repair the shuttle and get the Commissioner back to the Enterprise before her condition worsens.

It's been nearly 60 years since Julie Andrews first sang about how the hills of Austria were alive with the sound of music, but "The Sound of Music" remains a beloved cinematic treasure. Vividly colorful, unabashedly musical, and anchored by Andrews' performance, the story of Maria the would-be nun, and her small army of new wards — the Von Trapp children — is still rewatched and referenced often across the world.
With more than half a century of retrospect, "The Sound of Music" has also become a bit of a historical document: much of the film's cast and crew has since passed away, with the exception of Andrews herself and five of the seven actors who embodied the Von Trapp kids. Peter Berkos, the Universal Pictures sound effects maestro and champion of sound editors everywhere who shared a special achievement Oscar for his work on the Robert Wise-directed disaster epic The Hindenburg, has died. He was 101.
Berkos died Tuesday in Rancho Bernardo, California, his friend Brae Wyckoff told The Hollywood Reporter.
While president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors from 1963-66, Berkos began a successful campaign for his colleagues to gain full membership into the film and television academies and to receive credit onscreen and off for their work.
Berkos himself was uncredited for the first 20 years of his career until Car Wash (1976), and the Oscars would eventually revive its dormant competitive sound effects category from 1983 onward.
Across four decades, he worked for Universal on such films as Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958), four features directed by George Roy Hill — Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), the Oscar best picture winner The Sting...

Herman “Hy” Levine, a 48-year veteran of the film industry who rose through the marketing ranks at Universal and Disney, died Dec. 27 in Rockville, Md. after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He was 87.
Levine was an executive Disney from 1986 to 1998, rising to the rank of Vice President of Co-Op Advertising at the time when the studio began stepping up its movie output under CEO Michael Eisner after a particularly fallow period in the early 1980s. According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, reigning Tony champ “Kimberly Akimbo” is the frontrunner to win this year’s Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album with 10/3 odds. So far within this century 10 shows that won Tonys for both Best Musical and Best Score also came out on top at the Grammys. Among them are “The Producers,” “Hairspray,” “Spring Awakening,” “In the Heights,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Kinky Boots,” “Hamilton,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Band’s Visit” and “Hadestown.” Will that trend continue this year?

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
Best Original Song is such an odd category. On the Academy Awards broadcast, it is the one that gets the most airtime, as it is typical to perform all five of the nominated tunes during the show. While this is technically meant to showcase the nominees, it is really an excuse to break up what would be a fairly monotonous, long awards show.
However, most of the songs nominated for Best Original Song aren't all that interesting. A lot of the time, these tunes aren't integral to the film itself in the slightest, and they are simply musical wallpaper to play over the end credits of a movie as you file out of the theater. This is also the category most susceptible...

“We just knew we wanted it to feel contemporary,” explains Casey Nicholaw of his new musical “Some Like it Hot.” Although the show is adapted from the classic film of the same name, there are bold new choices made on stage which help today’s audiences relate to the material. Nicholaw directs and choreographs the big, brassy, song-and-dance fest now playing at the Shubert Theatre. ”I think it’s a modern take on a classic film,” says Nicholaw. Watch the exclusive video interview.
One of the main tasks with this adaptation was to reinvent the core characters. As Daphne (played by J. Harrison Ghee) begins to live as a woman to hide their true identity, the character realizes that they feel more like themself as a woman. Veteran character actress Harriet Sansom Harris just earned her first Emmy nomination for playing retired stand-up comic Susan on HBO Max’s “Hacks.” She has a Tony win for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” under her belt and decades of memorable TV appearances, but has shockingly never scored an Emmy nomination until now. If the actress wants to turn that nomination into a win, she will have to contend with a slew of her co-stars from the popular comedy series.
Harris is one of four nominees in the Best Comedy Guest Actress category from “Hacks.” Jane Adams, Laurie Metcalf and Kaitlin Olson also contend for the award, which clearly shows ample support for the series within the TV academy (as if the 17 total nominations for “Hacks” wasn’t evidence enough). Adams returns to the category after scoring a bid last year. Olson has one previous nomination while Metcalf has snagged three wins from 12 nominations.

The Drama League Awards set themselves apart from other theater industry kudos thanks to their Distinguished Performance Award. The category generally features forty to fifty performers from both Off-Broadway and Broadway productions. Nominees encompass both lead and supporting roles from plays and musicals, and can be of any gender. When one performer rises to the top of this deep roster, they tend to be the frontrunner for one of the acting races at the Tony Awards. This year, Sutton Foster claimed the Distinguished Performance award for “The Music Man.” In the process, the Tony race for Lead Actress in a Musical was just upended.

They’re still recovering emotionally and dealing with a quieter terror: high school. Also, cue a new monster from the Upside Down: Vecna, who victimizes people who haven’t fully processed painful past events. (So Hawkins is a supersized bag of trauma snacks!) A potential target: Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), still recovering from her stepbrother’s violent death. “Max is grieving the loss of Billy. Max never wants to feel vulnerable; she’s isolated from people that care most about her,” reveals Sink, who enjoyed the challenge of exploring “the sides of Max she doesn’t want anyone to see.” (Credit: Courtesy of Netflix) Too bad her bestie, once-telekinetic Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), is...

Amanda Seyfried might've gotten her big break in "Mean Girls," but she wasn't a big fan of the attention she got for one particular scene. The actor starred in the classic film as the dimwitted Karen Smith, who claimed she had special "ESPN" powers to predict the weather with her breasts. Seyfried said she'd get recognized by fans for her character every once in a while, but the comments guys would approach her with about the scene made her very uncomfortable.
"I always felt really grossed out by that," she told Marie Claire. "I was like 18 years old. It was just gross." Seyfried went on to detail the downside to being a teenage actor in Hollywood, noting that "being really famous [young] must really f*cking suck."
She added: "It must make you feel completely unsafe in the world. I see these younger actors who think they have to have security.

The musical features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill, and the book by Isobel Lennart with revisions by Harvey Fierstein and costumes by Susan Hilferty.

Exclusive: A new stage play adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is being developed with an eye toward the West End and Broadway. The Tony- and Olivier Award-winning Rob Ashford is set to direct.
The announcement was made today by producer Antonio Marion. Current plans are for the play to be developed in London prior to West End and Broadway stagings.
Written by British writing team Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, the new Sherlock Holmes play is described as an original tale offering a “deeply theatrical exploration of the mind of the famous detective,” while remaining faithful to the world created by Conan Doyle. Akram Khan will serve as choreographer/movement director.
Staged as “a mystery within a mystery,” the new play is described by producers as involving a case presented to Holmes that forces him to confront his own murky past: “But is the unravelling of...

Happy Centennial to the composer Elmer Bernstein. Bernstein was born 100 years ago today in NYC to Ukrainian immigrant parents. As a teenager he hoped to become a concert pianist. Fate had different plans; He became a legendary film composer instead. His A list breakthrough came in the mid 50s with the back-to-back success of The Man with the Golden Arm (his first Oscar nomination) and Cecil B DeMille's The Ten Commandments. A year before his death in 2004 he was Oscar nominated for a 14th time for Far From Heaven (2002). So many classic films on his resume. Consider...

A new iteration of “West Side Story” has arrived, courtesy of producer and director Steven Spielberg, who worked from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (“Lincoln”). After earning critical raves and a spot atop the AFI Top 10 Films of the Year list in 2021, and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Ariana DeBose, the film is an awards frontrunner with seven Oscar nominations and now it’s finally available to watch on streaming.
The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award winner Justin Peck choreographs the musical numbers in the film. Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum and Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger also led the production.

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

Are you looking for a light and breezy flick to stream at home? Well, you may want to look elsewhere. The movies we’ve compiled below test the merits of the phrase “all publicity is good publicity.” Whether controversial due to violent or explicit content, on-set occurrences, or tackling weighty topics like race or religion, the following films were lightning rods for conversation around the time of their release, sometimes overshadowing the quality of the films themselves.
Thankfully, all of these disputed movies are readily available to modern audiences right now, allowing us to see whether all of the hubbub surrounding these films was warranted. They’re also a great litmus test for determining how our standards for “decency” have warped, shifted, or stayed the same in the ensuing years. Without further ado, here are the 10 most controversial movies now available for streaming.

Audiences viewing Steven Spielberg’s new “West Side Story” will see many differences from the 1961 version, including a younger cast, revised screenplay and new choreography. What hasn’t changed is the music by Leonard Bernstein, the result of four high-profile experts who teamed up to record the score anew.
Oscar-nominated composer David Newman oversaw all of the arrangements and orchestrations; Tony-winning songwriter Jeanine Tesori supervised all of the vocal performances; Grammy-nominated producer Matt Sullivan was on set throughout, supervising the music during shooting; and world-renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Bernstein score with both the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The involvement of Dudamel and Newman were legendary composer John Williams’ idea. Williams, who has been Spielberg’s musical partner for 47 years, recalls Spielberg initially asking him to be music director on the film, “and I said, ‘you should get Gustavo to conduct the score. He’s done...

It was exactly 30 years ago when Whoopi Goldberg won her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the wise psychic Oda Mae Brown in the supernatural love story “Ghost.” Thanks to her gig co-hosting and moderating the Emmy-winning daytime talk show “The View,” Goldberg is in the rare stratosphere of Egot recipients, combining her Emmy, Oscar, Tony (for producing “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), and Grammy (for her one-woman comedy album).
Now, Goldberg is looking back on her legacy thanks to a new cover story featured in Variety. Goldberg, who is widely regarded as one of the best Oscars hosts of all time, now serves on the board of governors for the actors’ branch. When she’s not hosting “The View” or gearing up to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier in “Sister Act 3” for Disney+, Goldberg is apparently working on writing a script of her own.

Julie Andrews had a number of things working against her before she became an international superstar in her first movie role in “Mary Poppins.”
Andrews, who turns 85 on Oct. 1, almost had to turn down the role because she was pregnant when it was first offered. But studio chief Walt Disney was wowed by her Broadway performance in “Camelot,” and was willing to wait until after she gave birth to start production. Filming started in mid-1963, when Andrews’ infant daughter Emma was about six months old. Andrews went on to win the Oscar for best actress for her role as the famously eccentric governess.
After starting out in British theater, Andrews had made a splash when she crossed the pond to star in “My Fair Lady” on Broadway when she was just 21. But she wasn’t cast in the film adaptation, since the producers thought her lack of film experience would be an issue.

Ben Platt never imagined he would one day star in a series like “The Politician.”
“I didn’t think I could be a star of a show in general starting out. I think I was like, ‘I’ll do Broadway. I can be on stage and I can play Jimmy in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and Nathan Detroit [in “Guys and Dolls”] and that’ll be that,’” Platt says on this week’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “I’d still like to do those things, but I think as life has progressed, my view of what’s possible has just grown and grown and grown.”
I sat down with Platt recently at New York’s 92nd Street Y, where he was appearing in conversation with his “Politician” co-star Judith Light.
In “The Politician,” co-created by Ryan Murphy, Platt plays a scheming high school senior running for class president.

A new musical stage version of An Officer And A Gentleman will launch a North American tour in fall of 2020, producer Work Light Productions announced today.
The musical features a newly adapted book by Dick Scanlan (Tony-nominated in 2002 for Thoroughly Modern Millie and in 2010 for Everyday Rapture), based on an earlier book by Douglas Day Stewart (who wrote the screenplay for the 1982 movie) and Sharleen Cooper Cohen.
In addition to writing the newest version, Scanlan will direct. In a statement, he said, “Like all good stories, An Officer and a Gentleman is set in a specific world with its own culture, customs and costumes – the U.S. Navy. And like all great stories, its themes are universal: love, valor and the ways in which our reasons for pursuing a dream determine whether or not we’ll achieve it.”
The score will feature a catalogue of 1980s hits, including the film’s chart-topper “Up Where We Belong.

Walt Disney Studios has debuted the first official look at the woman playing Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” played by newcomer Ariana DeBose. Funny and strong-willed, Anita is a scene-stealing supporting character who sings the classic song “America.” The role was originally played onscreen by Rita Moreno in Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ 1961 “West Side Story” movie. Moreno, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work as Anita, is serving as one of the film’s executive producers. The project, based on the iconic Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name, casts “Baby Driver” star Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler as star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria, respectively.
The rest of the supporting cast includes Ana Isabelle as Rosalia, Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank, Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke, Curtiss Cook as Abe, and Rita Moreno as Valentina. Wise and Robbins’ film won 10 Academy Awards,...

Sutton Foster is the ostensible lead of “Younger” as a secret 40-something book editor and divorced mom who continues to pass herself off as a hip millennial — even as the Big Apple-based sitcom created by “Sex and the City’s” Darren Star just kicked off its sixth season this week. But her winsome yet duplicitous charade is starting to get old, especially when more and more of her colleagues are already in on her ruse.
Meanwhile, Hilary Duff as her editing partner Kelsey Peters – who is in the know about Liza’s real age and situation — is an actual millennial and acts as a supportive mentor to her. Her randy sexual escapades with rival editor Zane (Charles Michael Davis) and author client Jake Devereux (Jason Ralph) on last year’s fifth season sometimes recall the adventurous bedroom proclivities of Kim Cattrall’s PR pro Samantha Jones. For season 6, Kelsey...
