- Ella Payne and her family is preparing to celebrate her husband Curtis Payne's 50th birthday. But the celebration is interrupted when Curtis and his nephew, C.J., who are both firefighters, are called away to a house fire. After they return, however, they bring the news that the house that was on fire was C.J, his wife, Janine, and their two children's home. So, C.J. moves his family into Curtis and Ella's house, a situation which nobody is happy.
- C.J. looks for Janine, while Curtis enrolls in an anger management course.
- While C.J. is less than inclined to meet Janine's new boyfriend, Curtis studies painting.
- When Ella gets sick, Curtis takes on more responsibilities. C.J. struggles to adapt to living with Janine again.
