Writer-director Nicole Riegel is following up her 2020 directorial debut coming-of-age drama Holler with another story of a young woman finding her way in the world, this time scored and produced by the famed musical brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner. Her new film, titled Dandelion, premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and will be released in theaters nationwide on July 12. Starring KiKi Layne of If Beale Street Could Talk as well as Thomas Doherty and Melanie Nicholls-King, the first trailer has arrived ahead of the release.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Dandelion (KiKi Layne), a struggling Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey (Thomas Doherty), a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up a whirlwind romance.

“If Beale Street Could Talk” was one of the best films of 2018. Since then, we’ve been watching the young actress in the lead, KiKi Layne, and waiting for her star to keep rising. To be fair, she’s done some high-profile gigs since, including “The Old Guard” and “Coming 2 America,” but nothing that has really caught our eye since ‘Beale Street.’ From the looks of it, “Dandelion” could be that film.

“Get ready for a wild night,” host Zooey Deschanel improvised, as she waited for the starry crowd to take their seats inside the tented dinner held in the backyard of a sprawling Beverly Hills estate on Tuesday. Ask anyone who works in the fashion industry, and they’ll be quick to tell you it’s a competitive, sometimes brutal business — and they wouldn’t dream of doing anything else. Another truism: The creatives behind it outwardly seem to possess spines made of steel, and yet every element of their soul will go into a collection.
That was undeniably true on the first day of New York Fashion Week, when Prabal Gurung presented a wholly poetic Fall Winter 2024 collection inspired by personal loss. The Singapore-born Gurung was raised by Nepali parents in Katmandu, and he’s often said that he knew from an early age that he wanted to come to the U.S. and launch his own label; that decision, however, strained his relationship with his father, who died this past November. “I always had a fraught relationship with him, and now I had to go back...

The Paramount Pictures adaptation of the hit YA book “Children of Blood and Bone” is taking another step toward the big screen, with Gina Prince-Bythewood signing on to direct.
Prince-Bythewood will develop the next pass of a draft penned by author Tomi Adeyemi.
The action fantasy novel follows heroine Zélie Adebola, who belongs to a class of magic practicioners know as the maji, as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha, following the ruling class kosidáns’ brutal suppression of her people.
Rights to the 2018 book by Nigerian American novelist Adeyemi were acquired by Paramount in 2022 after a planned adaptation by Fox2000 and then Disney’s Lucasfilm stalled. Prince-Bythewood will develop another pass of a draft written by Adeyemi, who will also executive produce the film alongside Reggie Rock Bythewood. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment, Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment, and Matt Jackson of Jackson Pictures will produce.

Though she’d dreamed of owning a Spanish Revival home, there was something about the boxy, modern house that Anonymous Content manager Meredith Rothman couldn’t shake. Maybe it was the floor-to-ceiling windows. Or the abundance of natural light. Or the fact that it was tucked neatly into a canyon in Beverly Hills, conjuring up memories of her childhood home in Bel Air. Rothman asked interior designer Lauren Waters for her thoughts. “I assured her it was a wonderful blank canvas for intriguing furniture and great art,” says Waters.
That advice sealed the deal for Rothman, who tasked Waters with transforming the 2,500-square-foot spec house into a home that would serve as space to unwind, enable her to host the occasional soiree and showcase her burgeoning art collection, which includes works by Analia Saban and John Baldessari, as well as a charcoal drawing by her grandmother Luddie Waters, who was...

Is it beginning to feel a little like 2020 to anyone else? As the major Hollywood studios continue to refuse even entertaining the completely reasonable requests from the striking actors' and writers' guilds, they've already started pushing back films that were previously set to arrive in the next couple of months, with more delays potentially on the way. Meanwhile, Netflix is doing better than ever -- although, in this case, it's thanks to their deeply unpopular but undeniably successful crackdown on password sharing and not because everyone is stuck at home with nothing else to do but finally stream those films and TV series they've been meaning to catch up on.
Speaking of which (how's that for a segue?), if you've been planning to watch any of the films or shows leaving Netflix in August 2023, now's the time to get cracking. There's nothing departing this month too likely to vanish completely into the streaming void.

The “Old Guard” sequel starring Charlize Theron doesn’t even have an official release date, but a third installment may already be brewing. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” producer Marc Evans told me at the premiere of “The Mother,” Netflix’s new Jennifer Lopez action movie.
In “The Old Guard 2,” Theron reprises her role as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, and Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli return as gay couple Joe and Nicky. “You’re going to see more story of Joe and Nicky,” Evans assured.
After pandemic delays, filming began on the sequel, with Victoria Mahoney directing, about a year ago. Asked if Theron was contracted for a third movie, Evans would only say, “Charlize is a producer on the movie and deeply supportive of the franchise.”

Hulu was one of the first streaming services on the market, and over the years, it also endured as one of the best in the game — home to a robust and diverse library, including a healthy chunk of the best 20th Century and Searchlight movies, standout original Hulu movies like “Fresh” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” next-day episodes from countless hit broadcast shows, FX series, and plenty of other must-watch shows and films from throughout the years (being one of the first in the game means Hulu also has a lot of great distribution contracts). And that’s without even touching the potential for add-on subscriptions.
In short, there are a lot of good movies to watch on Hulu so we’ve put together a handy list to help you stop scrolling and start watching — we even made the titles clickable so you can get right to it.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Others Honored at Essence Black Women in Hollywood Event
The 16th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood event welcomed a constellation of stars — working both in front of and behind the camera — to the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon. The luncheon honored Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Dominique Thorne (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Tara Duncan (president of Freeform and Onyx Collective), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary).
Hosted by actor Boris Kodjoe, the event italicized the contributions Black women have made in film and television — particularly this year, but also across eras and generations. Essence magazine’s existence as a platform for Black representation since 1970 found kinship with Hollywood, an industry of images. At the event, many attendees acknowledged how the forward-thinking vision of Essence‘s founders is akin to the work Black creatives in entertainment are doing presently.

Michael B. Jordan is single again following his highly publicized split from Lori Harvey. On June 4, 2022, People confirmed the couple's breakup after a year and a half of dating. At the time, a source told the outlet that "Michael matured a lot over the course of their relationship and was ready to commit for the long term. He let down his guard with [Harvey], opening up emotionally in a romantic relationship for the first time. They had great times together and brought out the best in each other."
In the months since the former couple's split, Jordan has kept himself quite busy with his directorial debut "Creed III," which he also stars in alongside Jonathan Majors and Tessa Thompson. During a Feb. 8, 2023, appearance on "CBS Mornings," the actor told Gayle King that he was "lucky enough to have a lot of work" to focus on following his breakup, adding that the...

“Netflix and chill.” Future pop culture historians will likely look back and chuckle at that turn of phrase, which in the 2010s signaled a hefty technological shift from the days of “we can put on records.” It also represents the moment when Netflix dominated the zeitgeist for years. It’s an open question whether that dominance will continue after next month since the most popular streaming service is doing away with its password sharing capabilities. But in the meantime, let’s all “Netflix and chill” one last time, especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner.
Indeed, this Valentine’s season has a winsome collection for the romantics at heart to embrace, with a significant other or otherwise. Below is a list that includes Oscar winners, teen comedies, happy endings, sad endings, young love, old love, and enduring love. Let’s just say if you need something sweet to watch...

Another month means another streaming service overhaul: prepare for another round of disappearing movies and TV shows, just when you were finally gearing up to watch them. But on the bright side, that also means a bunch of new titles coming in to fill that void. As always, Hulu has plenty of titles — both old and new — to make sure it remains one of the dozen subscription services we all keep paying for.
Among the incoming titles are three different series set to close things out with their finale seasons: Hulu's widely acclaimed "Wu-Tang: An American Saga," the FX crime drama "Snowfall" and the recently canceled ABC drama, "A Million Little Pieces." The streamer is also daring to give Netflix a run for its money when it comes to the world of true crime docuseries. “Most of it lies within the subjectivity of Florence Pugh‘s character; the character of Alice is what drives the visual language of the movie,” declares two-time Oscar nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique about the voyeuristic framing of the central character in “Don’t Worry Darling.” For our recent webchat he adds, “that’s where we really played and I think that’s where the film really exists. Seeing her small within the confines of this ‘dollhouse’ and seeing her from outside the glass looking back in. She’s almost metaphorically encapsulated into a space. It just happens to be a wonderfully beautiful space. She’s doing this fifties housework, she’s cooking breakfast for him every morning before he leaves, and she has dinner ready every time he comes home. What is this world? For us it was really about having the camera either very far away from her and making her small inside this space,...

“It was one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen in my life,” declares “Don’t Worry Darling” production designer Katie Byron about some of the scenes brought to life by the creative team behind the film led by director Olivia Wilde. For our recent webchat she adds that Wilde “is so hands on, she cares about every detail, she’s obsessive and collaborative and she’s one of the most amazing people to work with, because she does have vision, but she’s so interested in hearing other people’s ideas and creating the world together,” Byron says. “When she has something very specific in her mind like this, you bend over backwards to make it happen.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Don’t Worry Darling,” a movie whose surrounding controversies have somewhat managed to eclipse the actual movie, is finally here.
And beyond the din of the tabloid machine, the movie is a mystery – less a whodunnit than a what-the-hell-is-going on, as we watch the life of 1950s housewife Alice (Florence Pugh) unravel as Alice discovers the disturbing truth about her idyllic desert enclave. (She is very much through the looking glass here.)
What is going on in her community? What is the Victory Project? And what is Chris Pine’s deal, anyway? For that, we must have an in-depth discussion of the film’s ending, so consider yourself warned.
Major spoiler warning. If you haven’t watched “Don’t Worry Darling” yet, seriously turn back around now. We’ll be here when you’re ready.
A Brief History of the Victory Project
We are introduced to Alice in the middle of a debaucherously wild weekday mixer.

Olivia Wilde's latest directorial venture, "Don't Worry Darling," was one of the most talked-about films of the year, mostly due to the off-screen drama surrounding the cast and crew, since the overall film was, as we described in our review, a stylish thriller that fell short of its high-minded ideas. The Florence Pugh ("Little Women"), Harry Styles ("Dunkirk"), Gemma Chan ("Crazy Rich Asians"), KiKi Layne ("The Old Guard"), Chris Pine ("All the Old Knives"), and Wilde ("Babylon"), starring film was inspired by the classic Hollywood films of yesteryear, set in an idealized community called Victory in an alternate 1950s with a sinister secret bubbling beneath its idyllic varnish. "Don't Worry Darling" was a moderate success at the box office, but the psychological thriller will soon be able to be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home.

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood launched her film career with the 2000 romantic sports drama “Love & Basketball,” which now is considered a cult classic. She would go on to shoot an adaptation of the female-driven book ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ in 2008. Meanwhile, she discovered a true talent with Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a troubled singer in the 2014 showbiz saga ‘Beyond the Lights.’
But Prince-Bythewood switched gears in 2020 and embraced the action genre with ‘The Old Guard,’ starring Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne. But her latest release, ‘The Woman King.’ is a throwback to the heroic action epics of yore, such as “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Braveheart,” “Gladiator” and “Spartacus.” The twist is that the mighty warriors known as the Agojir are Black women going through training for war in the West African kingdom of Dahomey in 1823. The headliner here is Oscar winner Viola Davis, who plays General Nanisca. She is tired...

Less than two weeks before “The Woman King” was set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, its director and editor were in a post-production facility in Sherman Oaks still fine tuning the action-packed epic.
