When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.
It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.
“We knew with this kind of story in particular, you have to go beyond the logline,” Lipez tells Variety. “It was so much about making sure people heard the full story, particularly when we were pitching it. As someone who thought they had a really good Holocaust education, what I knew immediately upon...

Seth Rogen’s initial years in the entertainment industry were anything but iconic. However, he had a dream to pursue, and he relentlessly wanted to pursue his ambition. Though he started as an actor in the industry, his talents truly shined when he transitioned from an actor to a screenwriter and producer.
Seth Rogen. Credits: Gage Skidmore/ Wikimedia Commons
Although his acting career was not disappointing compared to his creative genius in screenwriting, there’s a huge gap, and now being a writer, it feels that Rogen is a completely different entity. Being in Hollywood for so many years has made him a major figure in the industry, and his works have resonated well with the viewers.
One of the key aspects that make him a beloved figure in the industry is his openness about his personal experiences and now he has a bit of uplifting advice for actors, who are quitting on their dreams.

Wayne Garvie, Sony Pictures Television’s president of international production, has challenged European producers to better exploit Europe’s “treasure house of global IP”.
Speaking at Italy’s Avp Summit, Garvie said Europe has a huge depth of stories from Greek tragedies, Roman emperors, Norse gods, French musketeers, Spanish conquistadors to German fairy tales. “All of them have in various forms entertained the world for thousands of years, and each generation reinvents those stories.”
However, he noted US filmmakers are traditionally better at reinterpreting European stories for international audiences, and then capitalising on their success by building worlds and franchises around their series and characters.

Sony’s Wayne Garvie has urged the European industry to echo counterparts in the U.S. by turning TV shows into franchises.
“Once the Americans have a successful returning series they do something we Europeans seem to be incapable of – turn them into franchises,” the boss of The Crown outfit’s international productions said this morning.
Turning to his native UK, Garvie said the local industry has been “brilliant at creating non-scripted franchises but really poor in drama,” floating that Doctor Who, which is co-produced by Sony-owned Bad Wolf, is “the only example I can think of.” In the U.S., on the other hand, he flagged Sony franchises such as Cobra Kai, Breaking Bad and The Boys.
“It is obviously not easy to do and you must start with initial success but once we have that why aren’t we thinking more about how to build that world out?...

First Lady Jill Biden flew 3,600 miles from France to Wilmington, Delaware, to support her stepson Hunter Biden during his federal gun trial – and returned to France the next day.
Jill left France on June 6 for Courtroom 4A of the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building in Wilmington and returned for a state dinner on June 8, according to her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander.
She logged an entire day of air time to be at her son’s side while he battled federal gun charges and then to join her husband, Joe Biden, as he honored D-Day veterans on the 80th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy.
Jill flew to Wilmington on Tuesday evening. Biden dropped her off at her plane on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, and she then boarded Air Force One to travel to Paris.

Meghan Markle is desperate to salvage her tainted public image and remain relevant in literally any area she thinks she can.
Meghan’s Lifestyle Brand Is A Dud
Her new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, shows no sign of promise, and the momentum behind it has stalled significantly since she first announced the launch at the same time Prince William gave a speech at an awards ceremony in honor of Prince Harry and William’s mother, Diana, this past March.
Meghan’s Lemonada podcast deal has barely been mentioned since she first inked the contract in February. The Sussexes jaunt to Nigeria had the appearance of a “royal” visit without the benefit of actually being royal.
Harry and Meghan’s association with Netflix appears to be lagging, as all the “exciting projects” Meghan said she and her husband were preparing have yet to come to fruition. And her shiny new...

Last year, in bold defiance of post-pandemic doomsayers, French distributor Pathé doubled down on its commitment to the big-screen experience with its extravagant, no-expense-spared adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Three Musketeers” — a starry two-part tentpole that featured dynamic single-take swashbuckling sequences and a delectably wicked turn from Eva Green. As theatrical events go, it was fun, if not especially faithful to the book, demonstrating that the French could rival the Americans in showmanship.
This year, by way of an encore, Pathé delivered a sweeping three-hour retelling of Dumas’ crowning achievement, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Whereas “Megalopolis” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” swallowed up much of the oxygen at Cannes, “Count” premiered with far less fanfare but felt like a genuine triumph: a stunning, emotionally satisfying adventure tale, built on rock-solid source material. Compared to earlier adaptations (including an overlong miniseries with Gérard Depardieu...

From June 10 to June 16, actress and activist Geena Davis, alongside festival director Wendy Guerrero and many others, will be hosting the 10th anniversary of Arkansas’ Bentonville Film Festival. This year’s fest is expected to attract 65,000 attendees and, as with its previous installments, centers on championing the films and voices of women, non-binary, LGBTQ+, Bipoc, Api, and persons with disabilities in entertainment and media. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting the festival, Davis said that while the work Bff does is in a good place, there’s still more to be done.
“We’re making tremendous progress with gender, race and ethnicity-based inclusion,” said Davis. “Unfortunately, representation for people with disabilities is still in the low-single-digits, despite one in four Americans identifying as being disabled.”

Bryan Hagerich, a father from Pennsylvania who was detained in Turks and Caicos for carrying ammunition in his luggage, accused the island’s government of “anti-American sentiment.”
He claims he was not aware that the ammo was in his suitcase when he was ready to fly home after a vacation with his family, but he had to argue his way out of a minimum 12-year sentence for the crime nonetheless.
The Pennsylvanian father appeared in court in Turks and Caicos in early May and was informed that he needed to remain on the islands for another three weeks until he was sentenced.
Hagerich is one of a number of Americans held on ammunition charges in Turks & Caicos.
Hagerich has been home for almost two weeks after he was arrested and detained for over 100 days in Turks and Caicos for having stray ammunition in his luggage at an airport on the islands.

Movies and television have often had a push-pull relationship. When brands and intellectual properties became king near the start of the 21st century, TV became the place to go for creatives who wanted to tell bold and original stories to a mainstream audience. In contrast, the social revolutions of the 1960s saw networks burying their heads in the sand, serving up a buffet of conservative-leaning sitcoms where just about everybody was white, straight, and Christian, nobody had sex or cursed, and things like the Civil Rights Movement or the Vietnam War might as well be happening on Neptune. Meanwhile, the pictures swung in the opposite direction; the rise of New Hollywood meant that the escapist studio fare of yore was no longer fashionable.

“We have to do something,” says one of the many shadowy extremists who populate the fringes of Mike Ott’s tense drama McVeigh, a condensed account of the events that led Timothy McVeigh, an Iraq war veteran, to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma on April 19, 1995, killing 168 people and injuring 680 more. His close ties to white supremacist Richard Snell, a convicted murderer put to death by lethal injection that same day, might — reasonably — lead one, and especially people of color, to wonder why this man needs the oxygen of publicity, nearly 23 years after his own execution. But Ott’s film is a rare study of the radicalization of white working-class Americans, a phenomenon that went overground in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.
Ott carefully keeps us at arm’s length from his subject at all times, and his direction makes that clear from the outset. When we’re not following McVeigh,...

The acclaimed Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” tells the decades-long love story of two closeted men, Hawk Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) who meet in 1950s Washington. Their early days together are told against the backdrop of the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy (Chris Bauer), the notorious Republican Senator from Wisconsin, tapped into Americans increasing Cold War fears of Russia and rampant Communist infiltration in the U.S. He was a little-known junior senator who, on Feb. 9, 1950, made his notorious speech in Wheeling, West Virginia where he brandished a list of over 200 alleged Communists working in the State Department. These employers, he added, were being protected by high-ranking Communist sympathizers.
McCarthy got his desired response: nationwide publicity. He became an overnight sensation in the Senate. By 1953, McCarthy was chairman of Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations where he continued his Communist witch hunt while gaining more publicity and notoriety.

With Pat Sajak’s final appearance as host of “Wheel of Fortune,” the makeup of a daily hour of television that structures the days of millions of Americans is shifting once more.
“Wheel of Fortune” is the low-pressure option of the two famous game shows invented by the late superproducer Merv Griffin. Unlike “Jeopardy,” it’s intended to be not aspirational but accessible, with simple word-puzzle games and a department-store glamour that comforts but doesn’t dazzle. And Sajak, along with Vanna White revealing the letters, has been at its center since relatively close to the beginning; he took over from Chuck Woolery in 1981, six years into the show’s run, and has since been honored by the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest continuous stint hosting a single game show.
His departure won’t leave a vacuum, exactly; his replacement, Ryan Seacrest, was announced in June 2023 — nearly...

Perhaps royal fans weren’t the only ones who were made uncomfortable by Meghan Markle re-enacting the curtsy she apparently performed in front of the late Queen Elizabeth during their first meeting.
According to a body language expert, Prince Harry was affected by the “mocking” show put on by Meghan and signalled for it to stop.
Body Language Expert Says This Prince Harry Gesture Meant Meghan Markle’s “Mocking” Had Gone “Too Far”
While curtsying to your boyfriend’s grandmother may not be in your bingo card, it was a lived experience for Meghan Markle, who did not fail to recall the moment without some derision.
The important meeting, which Meghan ridiculed on her and Harry’s Netflix docuseries, ‘Harry And Meghan,’ happened when she and her then-boyfriend Harry were having lunch with.
Princess Eugenie at the Royal Lodge and heard the Queen would soon be paying them a visit.

Phrases like "the end of an era" and "TV legend" might be tossed around a bit too often these days.
But in the case of Pat Sajak and the end of his 43-year run as host of Wheel of Fortune, such descriptions couldn't be more apt.
As you've likely heard by now, Sajak is retiring from the show that made him famous, and Ryan Seacrest will take over when Wheel returns for its 42nd season in September.
Seacrest is well-suited to the gig, and while he's got some very big shoes to fill, we're sure he's up to the task of introducing prize puzzles and selling vowels.
But it's unlikely that he'll ever be regarded as an indispensable weekday night staple, as Sajak was for so many decades.
There are many reasons for this, and only a few of them have to do with the respective charms and talents of...

Donald Trump has had payback on the brain since he was convicted on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records in New York last week. He told Sean Hannity on Wednesday that he would have “every right” to weaponize the Justice Department to prosecute his political enemies should he win in November. He told Dr. Phil a day later that “sometimes revenge can be justified,” with the interview airing hours after he called for members of the House Jan. 6 Committee to be indicted. Real Housewives of New York Og, Jill Zarin recently appeared on The Goat and on Bravo’s Below Deck, and she decided a facelift was in order. Additionally, she had some work done with lipo on her hands.
Rhony Fans Get Irritated With Jill Zarin
Bravo fans don’t universally love Jill Zarin because she tends to be a bit overbearing sometimes. Recent television appearances showed her clashing with the cast of Below Deck. Fans slammed her for acting like she owned the super yacht when she was just a guest of the client.

Can you imagine a film where the Tardis doors swung open to reveal Tom Cruise, with Pamela Anderson potentially at his side, all under the visionary direction of Steven Spielberg?
Well, few Hollywood ‘what-ifs’ are as intriguing as the renowned director’s involvement with Doctor Who, with reports of megastars and massive cinematic overhauls being considered. Spielberg has mostly picked his own projects, reading books to adapt, finding real-life tales to dramatize, and then working with writers to develop screenplays. So, when rumors of his involvement in the Doctor Who film surfaced in the early 1990s, Whovians went into a frenzy, latching onto any hint of this project.

Though the rumored project never materialized, perhaps Spielberg should be grateful his Doctor Who movie never happened, for it preserved the quintessentially British charm of our beloved Time Lord.

A quarter-century after lending his voice to Z in Disney’s CG feature “Antz,” Woody Allen is set to return to the recording booth and narrate the upcoming Spanish animated short “Mr. Fischer’s Chair,” which will formally add several key co-producers during this year’s Annecy Festival. The film’s directors have also given Variety an exclusive look at early concept art for the project.
“Mr. Fischer’s Chair” revisits the 1972 World Chess Championship, where Bobby Fischer faced off against Boris Spassky. During game 17 of their “Match of the Century,” the Soviet team accused the Americans of manipulating Fischer’s chair to maliciously harm his opponent, leading to an exhaustive examination of the Eames Executive seat.
The film is created and directed by filmmakers and producers Xosé Zapata and Lorenzo Degl’ Innocenti, who recently teamed on the Spanish Academy Goya Award-winning animated short “The Monkey.” Zapata is handling the screenplay.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Jimmy Kimmel reminded viewers what former President Trump thinks of veterans.
The day marks the date that Allied forces stormed the beaches of northern France.
Kimmel initially gave “Draft Dodger Don” credit for his “respectful” social media post to mark the date.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time”.
Kimmel said that he agreed with the above and “would even be somewhat moved by” the post, had it not been for the fact that 12 hours prior, he wrote, “What I’ve gone through, no one has ever gone through…...

The restaurant we were dining at was dimly lit, scene-y, and thus unfortunately, the backdrop to our conversation was a thumping bass soundtrack. As I leaned forward, straining to listen over the thin eeeeeeeee sound ringing in my right ear, my gaze tracked down and tried to focus on people’s lip movements.

Out of 10 million Americans drafted into the military during World War II, 'Operation Overlord' aka 'D-Day', June 6, 1944, saw 156,000 American, Canadian and Brit forces landing on beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the fortified coast of France's Normandy region to kill Nazis and to free Europe:
"...the invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning.
"Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target.
"By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated... "... and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the enemy with the Normandy landings signalling the beginning of the end of war in Europe..."

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

During the first “Hot Topics” segment, cohosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, and Griffin talked about Republican senators’ decision to block a Democrat-led bill that would’ve federally protected access to contraceptives. While the others discussed the legitimate concerns Americans have over access to reproductive options being hindered by the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade, Griffin decided to share her very intimate reason for believing birth control access is simply a matter of “basic health care.” “I will say this: On a personal note, I was on birth control years before I was sexually active, for heavy, painful menstrual cramps,” Griffin explained, adding that she even had a traumatic experience with her pain during her tenure as a Trump administration official. “I remember meeting in the Pentagon with pain...

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry retained their royal titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex after splitting from the royal family in 2020. However, if King Charles ever decided to strip the couple of these royal designations, Meghan would automatically become Princess Henry.
Meghan Markle’s official royal title isn’t Princess Harry
On her wedding day to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle became the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. Queen Elizabeth gifted the couple those titles.
However, amid the tension surrounding Harry and Meghan’s relationships with senior royals including King Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Camilla Queen Consort, there has been chatter that these titles would be stripped. Kensington Palace has not commented on any decision regarding the couple’s official titles.
But, if this bold palace should occur, Meghan would remain royalty. However, she would refer to her other title of Princess Henry.

Sheryl's working from the inside to take down Leland? The Anti-Christ was born! David's first remote viewing mission is life or death for many.
Let's dig into Evil!
David's First Mission
David's remote viewing training was very short, and his first mission was literally life and death.
But David can be quite stubborn when he wants to be, so he barely gave viewing a shot when Father Dominic gave him the assignment. David feels used, and he doesn't like that one of only 250 priests in the US is now his handler.
If it's a conspiracy of some sort based on race, I'd be surprised. Father Dominic's Nigerian origins are the more likely explanation for his involvement.

More than half of American sports fans plan to stream some or all of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris this summer, according to a new study published by Amdocs this week.
Four years ago, a similar survey conducted by Amdocs found 28 percent of Americans planned to stream the Summer Games, which were made available on Comcast’s NBC Sports and Peacock apps.
This year, all events from the Olympic Games will be available to stream live on Peacock — even with the time difference between the United States and France, the host country of the Olympics this year. When the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report surveying film roles for Native Americans last October, of the 100 highest-grossing theatrical movies released between 2007 and 2022, only one had an Indigenous performer in a lead role. Yet when speaking to Native creatives and performers, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism for what’s to come for their representation in entertainment. “I feel very hopeful about where we are,” Jana Schmieding, who recently starred on “Reservation Dogs,” tells Variety. “I want to think that studios see the value in our storytelling.”

Twenty years after launching her Institute on Gender in Media — which created a blueprint for gathering data about inclusion and diversity on- and offscreen — Geena Davis is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Arkansas’ Bentonville Film Festival, which she runs alongside fest director Wendy Guerrero. Here, the Oscar-winning actor shares her proudest moments from Bff (the June 10-16 event is expected to attract 65,000 attendees this year), the meaningfulness of a Dei-centered fest in a tumultuous election year and what most informs her “inherently not controversial” belief that storytelling should be for everyone.
How does it feel to see Bff reach this milestone?
We truly can’t believe 10 years have already gone by. When we launched, Bentonville didn’t even have a movie theater. (Laughs.) And now the town is booming — art, culture, restaurants and museums. It’s been amazing to see.
What’s been the toughest part of this process that you didn’t anticipate?...

Congressman Jamie Raskin’s office is busy. It’s the summer interns’ first day, one staffer explains. Constituents and aides flutter in and out of the small lobby, somehow still spacious considering the generally cramped conditions the House’s quarters are renowned for. Everyone is watching the clock, everything is running a little behind schedule.
Raskin himself seems unfazed. The four-term Democratic representative from Maryland has seen it all before. When we sit down in the comparatively quiet sanctum of his office — which doubles as a central meeting room — he’s the picture of relaxation.

Godzilla Minus One is a rare beast. Despite being derived from a franchise that’s nearly three-quarters of a century old, and which has had more installments than there are days in a month, Takashi Yamazaki’s latest reinvention of the Big G feels fresh. It’s a true spectacle of emotion and cultural angst; a film that remarkably takes a piece of pop culture furniture like the giant irradiated lizard and makes him scary again.

For the latest season of TCM and Novel’s “The Plot Thickens” podcast, host Ben Mankiewicz became a treasure hunter. Maybe part of him always was, as the job of a film historian is often to find and showcase work that’s been lost. Taking it a step further, introducing others to any new film for the first time can make one feel like Indiana Jones discovering the Ark of the Covenant and Mankiewicz emulates that experience with “The Plot Thickens.” In Season 5, Mankiewicz examines the life and works of filmmaker John Ford, using audio conversations with Katherine Hepburn, Woody Strode, John Wayne, and others to illuminate our understanding of the masterful, yet mercurial director. But there’s an added adventure within Mankiewicz’ journey towards understanding Ford that sees the critic and personality cross oceans, brave harsh weather, and come face-to-face with the horrors of the past.
