Julia Fox is standing up against what she sees as a smearing of her creative vision on her feature screenwriting debut “Lipstick Palm.”
Fox exclusively told IndieWire that she is “not pleased” with issues that have arisen amongst the film’s producers. Fox penned the script with Sara Apple, and told Page Six in May 2023 that she was in pre-production on the dark comedy crime feature that was “‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ meets ‘Spring Breakers.'” Fox will act in a supporting role in the film, while the lead stars have yet to be announced.
“Right now we have our cast, we have a director, but we are having some issues,” Fox told IndieWire more than one year later. “We just have some producers that can’t get on the same page, which really sucks and I would speak on it more, but if it does end up going to court,...

Fantasmas, the new HBO show by Julio Torres, retains the absurdist flair of Los Espookys while bringing fresh twists. Blending the mundane and magical, the series delivers a witty take on life’s struggles and comedy. Fans of Los Espookys will be thrilled with Torres’ return, this time joined by familiar faces like Steve Buscemi, Dylan O’Brien, Paul Dano, and Emma Stone. Perhaps most excitingly, co-creators Ana Fabrega and Bernardo Velasco are back, ensuring the new series channels the same playful spirit while pushing boundaries further. A Playful Exploration of Storytelling The storyline is anchored in an amusing tale where Julio...

As a writer for “Saturday Night Live” from 2016 to 2019, Julio Torres was able to create immersive worlds — the existential melancholy of a sink; the font obsession of an “Avatar” super fan — in just a few minutes’ worth of sketch. Over time, the comedian has only acquired more space and resources to realize his singular vision. Since 2019, Torres has co-created and co-starred in the surreal sitcom “Los Espookys”; recorded the hourlong special “My Favorite Shapes”; and directed his feature debut, “Problemista,” acting opposite Tilda Swinton. With every added level of authority, Torres has assumed even greater control of the ultra-specific sensibility evident in his earliest “SNL” breakouts. Torres’ imagination yields glamorous, distinctly queer realities with the logic of a fairy tale, grounded by the bemused frustration of an author who had to traverse the American immigration system to bring his dreamy art to life.

One of the more commonly overused words in entertainment marketing is “visionary.”
Whether or not a single consumer has ever watched a film or TV show because of an unsourced studio claim that the alleged auteur behind it was a “visionary,” the frequency with which the term is applied appropriately is very low. Wanna call Wes Anderson a visionary? Sure. Even people who hate the guy can’t deny the singularity of his approach. But just as frequently it’s tossed in the direction of, say, a guy whose vision was making a commercial with Antonio Banderas as a bee who hates snot. There needs to be a more thorough “visionary” vetting process.
That being said: Julio Torres is a visionary.

Ryan Gosling is making the dreams of “Saturday Night Live” writers come true.
In addition to reprising his iconic role for a sequel to skit “Papyrus,” penned by Julio Torres, it’s now been revealed that Gosling’s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch was a shelved idea from 2018, with Jonah Hill originally being set to portray one half of the cartoon-character duo.
“SNL” hair stylist Jodi Mancuso and makeup artist Louie Zakarian both told The Ankler that the skit was originally pitched when Jonah Hill was hosting a Season 44 episode in November 2018. However, it was canceled due to challenges with the necessary prosthetics.
“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso said. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So...

Infatuation turns into a sinister obsession in the upcoming indie drama “Darkest Miriam.”
Based on Martha Baillie’s novel “The Incident Report,” the film follows loner librarian Miriam Gordon, played by “Severance” actress Britt Lower, whose new affair with a taxi driver (Tom Mercier) coincides with her receiving threatening letters from a secret admirer. Could her beau also be her nemesis?
The film, written and directed by Naomi Jaye, is set to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in the Viewpoints Section on Sunday, June 9.
Acclaimed filmmaker Charlie Kaufman serves as an executive producer on the film, seemingly stamping it with his signature existentialism. Kaufman joined after reading author Baillie’s other book “Sister Language.” Canadian poet Eva H.D. approached Kaufman on behalf of the production.

When Los Espookys was cancelled in 2022, a chorus of disappointment rang out through the industry and from fans of the beloved show. It was the kind of news that threatened a certain sense of disillusionment, but unbeknownst to its fans at the time, creator Julio Torres had a lot up his sleeve. The writer, who first became known for his work on Saturday Night Live digital shorts like “Papyrus” and “The Actress,” was already hard at work on his first feature film and a new series. Problemista hit theaters this spring, and the new series became Fantasmas, which will open Atx TV Festival on May 30 before premiering on Max June 7.

"I can feel the inner lives of shapes and colors and sounds and numbers..." Wow that's strange. Max has revealed an official trailer for a wacky comedy series called Fantasmas, streaming this June. It's the latest creation of comedian / writer / actor Julio Torres, who stars in, writes, directs this series after releasing his Problemista film with A24 last year. Fantasmas translates directly to "ghosts" in Spanish, though this series is actually about a golden oyster, or dreams, or other weird things. Torres explores the peculiar world of folktales with a "fresh and unique twist on the classic tale of the lost golden oyster." Ever since he was struck by lightning as a child, he has seen the world in a different light. After experiencing weird dreams, Julio decides to embark on a journey through a surreal, alternate version of New York City. The series stars Torres with Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos,...

Julio Torres is stepping into a very literal and gender-swapped “Girl With a Pearl Earring” rendition for HBO.
The “Los Espookys” creator is back at the network with new surreal series “Fantasmas,” which he created, directed, and stars in. The series debuted at the Atx TV Festival earlier this year.
Torres plays a fictionalized version of himself as he tries to uncover a lost gold oyster earring. In his search to find the precious object, Torres’ character Julio reflects on the offbeat folks he encounters in introspective, eerie, and comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. The surreal series is billed as a “fantastical six-part tale” that is a “kaleidoscope of color” to “weave together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose, and connection in an increasingly isolating world.”
In addition to Torres, the cast includes Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo.

For children, summer always seems full of endless possibility. The breaks from school, the family trips, the time spent at camp or reading books and watching movies.
These days, the closest thing we have is summer entertainment — the cultural distraction from otherwise having fewer breaks, shifting travel (wedding season!), and maybe not as many of those life-changing adventures that a lot of summertime stories seem to be based on. Summer movies offer a chance to go out and cool down while summer TV is the best way to wind down and stay in after days of work, travel, and relentless heat.
Along with detailed monthly previews (here’s May), IndieWire pulled together a summer TV preview with 15 brand-new shows premiering over the next couple months. Some are pulled from existing material — Star Wars, “Sausage Party,” novels, a true story about the L.A. Clippers — while others defy categorization. Some we...

Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.
The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.
“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

We live in a society that insists if you work hard, you can probably achieve the goals you've set for yourself. But "Problemista," the first feature film by writer and comedian Julio Torres, which is now in theaters worldwide, poses the question: is working hard always enough? Loosely based off of Torres's own immigration experience, the film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to make his dream a reality in New York City who loses his job and desperately needs to secure a sponsor to stay in the States. Even after taking a freelance assistant gig with an erratic art critic named Elizabeth (played by Tilda Swinton), Alejandro (played by Torres) finds himself in one of the most relentless and nightmarish mazes of American bureaucracy - the US immigration system.

The Papyrus font is still haunting Ryan Gosling, who faced his fears once again in the new live sketch of Saturday Night Live released this weekend. The font was used in James Cameron’s mega-successful franchise, Avatar which released its sequel two years ago. The 2017 Papyrus SNL video was a huge hit, which showed Ryan Gosling’s Steven Wingdings, who is bothered by the fact that the movie used that basic font for its logo.

After much anticipation, the sequel to the 2017 sketch “Papyrus 2” has finally emerged despite being cut for time during the live broadcast, making its debut on YouTube.
The original sketch was conceived by former “SNL” writer Julio Torres, who was inspired by a past tweet in which he mused, “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo, and no one stopped them.”
Directed by Dave McCary (who also shot the previously pointed Torres sketch “Wells For Boys” with his now-wife and current collaborator Emma Stone), this meditation on obsession and a questionable font became the logo for James Cameron’s massive franchise.
Gosling recalled the (alleged) decision-making process of choosing the font papyrus for the blockbuster, in the past sketch, “Like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, just yanking leaves along the way.” Eventually, his character would...

The Cinema for Gaza auction has added a Joker poster signed by Joaquin Phoenix and a Crown script signed by Emma Corrin, as it passes more than $200,000 in donations.
The campaign was launched last week by UK film professionals Hanna Flint, Julia Jackman, Leila Latif, Sophie Monks Kaufman and Helen Simmons, and has immediately taken off with works from the likes of Jonathan Glazer, Spike Lee and Tessa Thompson. The organizers had no backing or budget and largely organized efforts over a WhatsApp group chat launched over dinner in February.
The auction’s final lots now feature a Joker poster signed by Phoenix, a You Were Never Really Here poster signed by Phoenix and Lynne Ramsay, a Crown script signed by Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana, a custom Cinema for Gaza painting by American History X director Tony Kaye and a chat with writer-comedian Julio Torres and custom tattoo design.

In Roger Ebert’s one-star review of David Lynch‘s “Blue Velvet” in 1986, the film critic had strong words for the director he never softened through the rest of his career, even as Ebert came to appreciate some of Lynch’s later films. Ebert wrote that Isabella Rossellini “is asked to do things in this film that require real nerve… She is degraded, slapped around, humiliated and undressed in front of the camera. And when you ask an actress to endure those experiences, you should keep your side of the bargain by putting her in an important film.”
But Rossellini, who at the time of the controversial landmark’s release was in a relationship with director Lynch, today doesn’t necessarily agree with Ebert’s takedown of the movie. The daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini had by then gathered some modeling and film credits, but “Blue Velvet” proved to be her big breakout.

In 2024, could there be sure a thing as a “hip film studio” that would attract both filmmakers and adventurous filmgoers despite the subject matter or “creatives”? From the intense internet “buzz” the answer is a big yes. A century ago it was those Warner Brothers with their urban crime thrillers (before expanding into swashbucklers and tearjerkers). And there are those studios that specialize in a genre as Blumhouse does with horror and the Marvel Studios with their comics properties. Perhaps the last time a studio inspired nearly blind loyalty may have been in the early 90s with Miramax, which introduced us to, among many, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino before one of the founders started the spark that became “Me Too”. Today it is A24, which grabbed the top six Oscars a year ago. Last week saw the release of Love Lies Bleeding. From that quirky crime noir/love story...
