Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois had been a formative album for director and choreographer Justin Peck, and so when it came to reinterpreting it for the stage, Peck felt a responsibility to do right by the other longtime fans.
After initially toying around with the format of the piece, Peck, who is resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet, turned to a dance-based show, without any dialogue. Instead, the narrative plays out through movement and songs from the album, performed by three vocalists and a band. The idea was to give fans something new to explore, via a new storyline, while tapping into their own experience with the album.
“It’s expressed in this way that almost feels like you’re watching a silent film, and it allows the viewer their own personal experience and even a little bit of room for them to meet it halfway with their own point...

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

The anticipation surrounding Illinoise, the stage musical and dance performance inspired by Sufjan Stevens’ revered album of the same name, has been building for quite some time. Following successful runs at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theater and New York City’s Park Avenue Armory, Illinois has now arrived on Broadway, opening at the St. James Theatre, just in time for eligibility at the 2024 Tony Awards.
Since its debut at Bard College in New York last spring, the production has garnered wide acclaim from critics.
Upon its release in 2005, Stevens’s concept album, comprised of 26 songs dedicated to the state of Illinois, quickly resonated with a generation of listeners. Through the album, Stevens weaved together historical figures, local references, and personal narratives, alternating between marching band arrangements and intimate banjo strums. Despite its specific geographic focus, the album’s themes of loss, rediscovery and the universal human experience connected with audiences worldwide.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

The setting for Illinoise, Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury’s emotionally supercharged reinterpretation of the 2005 Sufjan Stevens concept album, is various locations across the Land of Lincoln — a cornfield, a hiking trail, a woodland clearing, the suburban home of a serial killer, a small town in the middle of nowhere, the top of a skyscraper and, of course, Chicago, with an out-of-state detour to New York City. But the real setting of this thrilling dance-musical-concert hybrid, alternately rhapsodic and shattering, is our collective youth.
Without a word of spoken dialogue, the show pulls us into late adolescence, a time when love, anguish and everything in between are felt perhaps with the greatest intensity. The book co-written by director-choreographer Peck and Drury (who won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama with her brilliant meta-theatrical race inquiry, Fairview) is skillfully shaped yet invisible in the best sense of undiluted physical, sensorial and elemental storytelling.

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. Illinoise, a theatrical adaptation of Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 album, will move to Broadway in April, slipping in under the wire for this season’s Tony Awards consideration.
The musical, which is currently playing Park Avenue Armory through March 23, will transfer to the St. James Theatre. The first performance of the show on Broadway will take place April 24 at 2 p.m. and will also be the show’s opening night. The eligibility cut-off date for the Tony Awards is April 25.

The production is directed and choreographed by Justin Peck, resident choreographer and artistic associate of the New York City Ballet, who also choreographed Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film West Side Story. It’s not hard to imagine what Justin Peck heard in Sufjan Stevens’s 2005 album Illinois that convinced him that the music pulsated with possibilities for dance. Illinois, with its orchestral textures, surprising mixed-meter rhythms, and impressionistic instrumental interludes, is an explosively varied 75 minutes of music as Stevens’s lyrics traverse the history, geography, and iconography of the Prairie State. At its best, Peck’s stage adaptation, which arrives at the Park Avenue Armory following a run at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, suggests that rapturous movement was somewhere inside Stevens’s songwriting from the start.

Steven Spielberg has cast his next star for the upcoming remake of West Side Story.
Maddie Ziegler will play a member of the Jets, one of the rival gangs from the 1961 musical film. While it’s unclear who she’ll play in the film, it’s likely her dance talent caught Spielberg’s eye as Ziegler, 16, rose to fame on Dance Moms and has worked extensively with Sia on her music videos.
Joining the cast is Tony nominee Mike Faist who will portray Riff, the leader of the Jets, opposite Ansel Elgort who was cast as the male lead, Tony.

Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story” remake has announced a cast of Broadway alums — and a few TV dance stars — to fill out the ranks of the new Sharks and Jets.
Mike Faist will play Riff, the leader of the Jets. Faist has already starred in the Broadway productions “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Newsies.” Puerto Rican singer and dancer Ana Isabelle will play Rosalia. Maddie Ziegler, who appeared in “Dance Moms” and in a series of Sia music videos, will play a member of the Jets.
Ansel Elgort and Rita Moreno were previously announced as the two leads. Moreno will be playing Valentina, a remade version of the character of Doc, the owner of the corner store in which Tony works. And Elgort has been cast as Tony.
Casting director Cindy Tolan oversaw auditions from over 30,000 performers that included open casting calls in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and San Juan.

If this week’s So You Think You Can Dance had to be summed up by a twist on an Oscar-winning movie title — and let’s be honest, what major life scenario couldn’t/shouldn’t fall under those terms? — then what better way to express the joy of Gaby’s Japanese-inspired hip-hop number and Edson’s blow-to-the-gut exit at the exact moment he broke on through to the future all-star side?

The first live show of So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season has me quoting the immortal words of Mary J. Blige and Wyclef Jean: “Someone please call 9-1-1. Tell them I’ve just been shot down. And the bullet’s in my heart. And it’s piercin through my soul. Feel my body gettin’ cold.”

We’re pretty early into So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season, and yet I’m thinking we’re already overdue for a Change.org petition banning neophyte judge Jason Derulo from uttering any variation of his utterly meaningless go-to critique: “I was there for it.” “I was in there with you.” “I was in.” “I was all there for it.”
I was… about to press my index fingers so deeply into my eardrums that I’d never endure the “Talk Dirty” singer’s limited vocabulary again?

You can accuse So You Think You Can Dance‘s Nigel Lythgoe of a lot of crimes — aggressively leering at pretty young things; overtly or inadvertently ensuring that gay contestants never mention their sexual orientation on air* — but love him or hate him, the man is responsible for a pretty righteous Twitter feed. (*Correct me if I’m wrong on that, but I don’t recall one out-and-proud moment over 12 seasons… insert side-eye emoji here.)

With no surprise to fans or judges, 18-year-old Ricky Ubeda was named the winner of season 11 of So You Think You Can Dance Wednesday night. EW was the first to talk to Ricky and the judges about his win.
“I am in complete shock,” the Miami native said. “I knew this was possible, but for it to actually happen is unreal… I just graduated high school. I don’t know what my real life is yet. This is real life I guess, and it doesn’t feel like it.”
It may be unreal for him, but it was expected by just about everyone else.

Spoiler Alert! If you haven't yet watched tonight's So You Think You Can Dance finale, turn back now! As another summer comes to an end, so does another stellar season of So You Think You Can Dance. After weeks of breathtaking performances, Ricky Ubeda was unsurprisingly and deservedly crowned America's Favorite Dancer of season 11. Tonight's finale was, as usual, two hours of the season's best performances, from Zack and Valerie's Top 20 tap number to Jessica and Robert's gorgeous contemporary routine from last week's episode. We were also treated to a performance from Sean Paul and Enrique Iglesias, and this season's winning dance crew, The Wanted...

Did a tap dancer finally hoof his or her way to the title of America's Favorite Dancer?
On Wednesday's Season 11 finale of So You Think You Can Dance, we were treated to "Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Sean Paul, a killer new group number by Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott, and repeats of our favorite performances from throughout the season. More importantly, we also found out whether it was Jessica Richens, Ricky Ubeda, Valerie Rockey or Zack Everhart who took home bragging rights.

So, who is America’s favorite dancer…?

All of the So You Think You Can Dance competitors' hard work, determination, and sometimes questionable performance costumes (just kidding!) has all led to this moment-- crowning America's favorite dancer this season. So who will it be? Will it be jazz dancer Jessica Richens, tapper Valerie Rockey, contemporary dancer Ricky Ubeda, or tapper Zack Everhart, Jr? I must say it is a pleasure to have two tap dancers in the finale.
Before we get the answer to the big question, I predict there will be lots of great dancing, and a visit from some of our favorite So You Think You Can Dance guest judges. We will also have a musical performance from Enrique Iglesias and Sean Paul as they perform the hit single "Bailando."
Buckle up tight, people. This is the So You Think You Can Dance live blog!

The top four dancers did all they could to earn your vote to become this season's So You Think You Can Dance winner. This year there will be only one winner, rather than both a guy and girl The top four dancers -- Valerie Rockey, Jessica Richens, Ricky Ubeda, and Zack Everhart, Jr. performed an incredible five times each. I was exhausted by the end of the show, and I am just a spectator.
So who left it all on the So You Think You Can Dance stage? Let's try and figure out who will be crowned the season 11 champion.

This is easily the most excited I have been for an episode of So You Think You Can Dance all season. Even though I picked three of the four finalists as major contenders when the Top-20 was announced and five of the final six, thank you you very much, this is definitely not the Final Four Zack Everhart, Jessica Richens, Valerie Rockey and Ricky Ubeda that I thought we would have just a few weeks ago. That being said, each has managed to have a breathtaking moment or four, however, with the exception of Ricky, each has also had their share of missteps as well.

That bit of Michael Jackson lyrical gobbledygook is a fitting intro to my recap of tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance Top 8 telecast — seeing how the end-of-episode results made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

So You Think You Can Dance fans, I have a dilemma.
For much of Wednesday’s Top 10 performance show — which paired each finalist with an All-Star dancer from seasons past — I couldn’t quite decide whether the Top 10 were put at an advantage or disadvantage by dancing with Sytycd vets.
Take, for example, what I considered tonight’s most entertaining routine: a fun hip-hop number between Jessica Richens and her All-Star companion, Twitch. On her own, Jessica did an excellent job with the fast-paced routine (and started to break away from the idea that she can only excel at jazz...

How can I adequately express my feelings about So You Think You Can Dance‘s Top 14 performance show? Allow me to take a cue from Paramore’s Hayley Williams: “After all this time, I’m still into you.”
Okay, okay, I realize that’s cheesy. But let’s face it: During the 120 minutes allotted for Wednesday’s episode, it was hard not to be legitimately frustrated that this gem of a reality competition series so often flies under the radar, when even in its 11th season, performers are still earning three-judge standing O’s (and millions from viewers’ living rooms,...

I know it’s early into Season 11, but I’m not sure So You Think You Can Dance‘s effervescent Rudy can do any wrong.
Ok, maybe he should consider a 10 percent reduction in wide-eyed golly gee-ness when he gets positive feedback from the judges — it’s sometimes a fine line between wicked heartthrob and ventriloquist’s dummy — but you’ve got to admit he’s as loveable as a teacup chihuahua peeking out from a cashmere blanket (or a newborn kitten cradled in an endive leaf, if you’re not really into canines).

From the moment we saw him during the So You Think You Can Dance auditions we felt certain Miami contemporary dancer Ricky Ubeda (he of the goofy grin, scruffy chin, and impossible extensions) would likely wind up going far in the competition. To us he feels like the perfect combination of all stars Mark Kanemura (angular, quirky) and Neil Haskell (long-legged, athletic).
Last week Ricky amazed with a Sonya Tayeh number while temporarily paired up with another strong contemporary dancer, Jessica Richens.
This week the top 20 dancers were assigned permanent partners and Ricky drew adorable tapper Valerie Rockey. Their first assignment together, a Travis Wall routine….
There are certainly other strong dancers on Sytycd this year, but we’re having trouble seeing any of them beating Ricky out for the title of America’s Favorite Dancer.

Spolier alert: I’m not going to complain about Nigel Lythgoe taketh-ing away So You Think You Can Dance‘s crucial “fight for your existence” solo round during tonight’s Top 20 performance episode (Part Deux).
Granted, I reserve the right to kvetch, moan and grumble about this questionable omission until at least the end of July, but for now, allow me to focus on the positive and give the executive producer props for giveth-ing us the greatest guest judge in So You Think You Can Dance‘s 11-season history: Misty Copeland.
