Our favorite Arconia residents are back for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, except this time, they’re heading to Hollywood.
Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin reprise their respective roles as a trio of amateur podcasting sleuths who try to solve the shocking Season 3 finale surrounding Charles’ (Martin) stunt double and friend Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).
Per the official season synopsis, “Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. As Charles, Oliver, and Mabel race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents.”

Perhaps no actor received a greater injection of exposure and career boost during the awards season just past than did Lily Gladstone, the Indigenous performer who won SAG Award and Golden Globe trophies along with an Oscar nomination for her standout performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While she lost the Academy Award for Best Actress to Emma Stone for “Poor Things,” Gladstone benefited tremendously, significantly elevating her stature after entering the campaign as a relative unknown. “I think I’m probably not going to fully metabolize it for years,” she says. “What’s cool is that you develop this camaraderie with people who are going through it with you, and there’s this collective relief when you get to see each other on the other side of it all. Colman Domingo never imagined he would be “a 100 of anything.”
“The fact that I’m one of the 100 most influential people in the world feels like I have a lot to live up to, and I want to because I don’t take that lightly,” Domingo told Variety on the red carpet at the Time100 Gala Thursday night. “The fact that someone in some committee believed that I’m impacting many people on this planet, I feel like now the work begins even more so. I know that I have to be even more mindful and thoughtful about how I create and the work that I do.”
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, the Time100 Gala celebrated this year’s most influential figures across film, sports, music and more, including Domingo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, 21 Savage, Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson, Fantasia Barrino and Henson herself.

It’s no surprise that some movies end up being more hyped around than some others, but all the internet buzz doesn't always mean the film is going to actually be a great one. However, history shows that the movies that are all over social media usually are the ones who do well.
One of the most hyped movies of 2023 was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, no doubt. The story of the father of the atomic bomb featuring brilliant Cillian Murphy ended up being a huge success among the viewers and showed amazing box office.
But what's more, the movie bagged seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor as well. However, before that happened, there were a lot of speculations about which movie would end up taking home the Best Picture Award.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. Michel Gondry hasn’t worked with a Hollywood studio since the 2011 comedy “The Green Hornet.” But he’ll do so for his follow-up to last year’s “The Book Of Solutions” for what’s arguably the most peculiar project in his filmography. Deadline reports that Gondry heads to Universal to direct an untitled coming-of-age musical set in 1977 Virginia Beach. The project is the brainchild of Pharrell Williams, inspired by the music producer’s childhood living in the the city’s Atlantis Apartments.

We are somehow now into the spring season, and while cinemas have been a tad dull, noteworthy new books have arrived at a frantic pace. Here are some that should be on your radar, and please note that our next column will include, among other treats, a lengthy rundown of recent noteworthy novels.
The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two by Tanya Lapointe with Stefanie Broos (Insight Editions)
Dune: Part One, the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, spawned a handful of painstakingly crafted, info-packed hardcover books. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two takes the same approach that made these earlier texts so satisfying. Tanya Lapointe was on set every day, and her accounts of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes are captivating. The designs of Geidi Prime are standouts and supplemented with quotes like the following, from production designer Patrice Vermette...

After the conclusion of each Academy Awards ceremony, I always go back and rewatch the telecast from start to finish. I want to pick up on all of the things that I might have missed during my initial viewing. I especially like to study the nominees’ reactions each time an envelope is opened — particularly for the major categories when the famous five-camera shot is strategically displayed on the TV screen. I always rewind the moment that each winner is announced, so that I can carefully study the look on each individual’s face both before and after the big reveal.
As we all know, this year’s Best Actress race was the only above-the-line race with any real suspense. That it made it all the more fascinating when reigning Best Actress Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) announced that the torch would be passed on to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.

That’s a wrap on Oscar season 2024 — but first, the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast’s Roundtable dives in one last time to take a final look at the highs, lows and head scratchers from Sunday night’s ceremony. “Oppenheimer” did huge, but it didn’t quite sweep. “Poor Things” over-poor-formed. 2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Da'Vine Joy Randolph wore her grandmother's glasses in 'The Holdovers'.The 37-year-old star won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of grieving mother Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne's comedy-drama film and explained how she continued a theme of leaving "subliminal love letters" to those who have inspired her through her character's spectacles. In an interview with Variety magazine, Da'Vine said: "Every role that I do, I always leave subliminal love letters to women of colour in the details. You can go back and check my resume – every single role, there's a connection to someone I know personally, someone in history, a fellow actress. And I love it, because those who know, know."Ultimately what I'm doing is I'm just implanting moments of connection and honesty. There's a reason why we're still talking about America Ferrera's "Barbie" monologue months after the blockbuster was released. While presenting the Best Supporting Actress award during the 2024 Oscars, Rita Moreno gave an emotional speech about Ferrera, who was nominated for her role of Gloria in the pink-filled film. While Ferrera didn't wind up taking home an Oscar - the award instead went to Da'Vine Joy Randolph for her role in "The Holdovers" - Moreno's speech left folks in the audience trying to understand why.
"America. Your powerful Barbie monologue is perhaps the most talked-about moment in the most talked-about movie of the past year," Moreno said. "Your words and the passion with which you delivered them about the most impossible standards females must try to live up to galvanized not only women but everyone with a pulse."

Sunday’s Oscar telecast delivered a rare moment in the sun for some of Hollywood’s most unsung heroes: Personal publicists. And while TV viewers might’ve wondered why they got so much love, those in the audience at the 2024 Oscars might argue the shine was due to a classic case of reverse psychology.
At precisely 4 p.m. inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, David Alan Grier took to the stage with a microphone in hand to make pre-show announcements. “Good evening and welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 96th Academy Awards,” said the veteran star with a clock ticking over his shoulder on the big-screen with less than three minutes and 40 seconds before showtime. “Y’all are going to be hearing from me for the rest of the night, but for the next minute, enjoy seeing me. Feast your eyes upon my body. I’m a real zaddy.”

Non-English-language movies stormed the Oscars this year, with five films taking home statuettes — the most ever in one ceremony.
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s Best Screenplay Academy Award for French-language courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall followed three past non-English-language winners: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019), Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk To Her (2002) and A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch and Pierre Uytterhoeven (1966).
The Best Sound Academy Award for Jonathan Glazer’s German-language Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest marked a first for a non-English-language film. The pic also clinched Best International Feature Film.

The US Oscars broadcast might have gone down a treat, but ITV’s coverage in the UK has made the internet a bit cross. What could happen differently next year?
The 96th Academy Awards seems to have gone down rather well. Nobody hit anyone. Every envelope seemed to have the right name in it. The cameras were generally pointing in the right direction. High fives all round, I say.
Unfortunately for ITV – who nabbed the UK broadcast rights off Sky, who’ve held them since 2004 – when the actual ceremony seems to be going down well, it throws the shortfalls of UK coverage into the spotlight.
Jonathan Ross took on hosting duties alongside a panel including The Hobbit star Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith. It was, with the best will in the world, a bizarre mix; all four seemed...

British screenwriter Simon Stephenson has accused the makers of The Holdovers of plagiarism, saying its similarity to his 2013 script, Frisco, is “brazen”.
Mere hours before Alexander Payne’s comedy drama The Holdovers was garlanded with an Oscar win – Da’Vine Joy Randolph walked off with a Best Supporting Actress gong – controversy suddenly blew up thanks to a report published by Variety.
According to British novelist and screenwriter Simon Stephenson – whose credits include The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain – The Holdovers was “plagiarised line by line” from Frisco, a screenplay he wrote in 2013.
One of the scripts shortlisted for 2013’s Black List of unproduced screenplays, Frisco is about a middle-aged, grouchy pediatrician who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a 15 year-old patient. This, Stephenson has argued, is markedly similar to the premise of The Holdovers, in which a middle-aged, grouchy teacher (played by Paul Giamatti in the film) strikes up an...

At the 96th Oscars, it truly was an honor just to be nominated. In the smartest and classiest move of an enjoyable Oscar night that clocked in decidedly under the allotted time—not that it should be hard to get the job done in three and a half hours—the presentation of the acting categories allowed each of the nominees to be recognized and congratulated before the envelope was ever opened. Gracious, yes. Emotionally effective, even more so. Tears were shed among the contenders for the first award (supporting actress) while past recipients read heartfelt testimonials: Jamie Lee Curtis (last year’s winner), a stunning Rita Moreno, Regina King, Lupita Nyong’o and Mary Steenburgen. The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph was overcome even before taking the stage for her expected yet satisfying win. Anticipation grew through the night as viewers wondered which ...

Now that’s how you do an Oscar Night right.
The 96th Academy Awards show felt like a real celebration, in a great year for movies — nearly all 10 of the Best Picture nominees were keepers. This was an Oscars bash full of classic moments: Da’Vine Joy Randolph bringing everyone to tears. Ryan Gosling rocking “I’m Just Ken” with Slash on guitar. Rita Moreno singing “America” to America Ferrera. The orchestra trying to play off Sean Ono Lennon as he had the crowd say, “Happy Mother’s Day, Yoko!

They held the 96th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday an hour earlier than usual (4 p.m.) – broadcast as always on ABC – and as Oscar shows go, this one was mostly a lot of fun and highlight-packed, even if the results were overwhelmingly predictable. There were heartfelt and entertaining acceptance speeches, a few incredibly powerful moments and one showstopper for the ages: the Ryan Gosling “I’m Just Ken” production number. (More on that in a moment.) If I were giving the whole thing a grade, it would be a B+.

Winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Da’Vine Joy Randolph wanted to thank her publicist.
“I have to give a special shoutout to my publicist, and I know you all said, ‘Don’t say nothing about no publicist,’” the actress began onstage, referencing some cheeky pre-show instructions. “But you don’t have a publicist like I have a publicist.”
“The Holdovers” star continued, “You have been by my side through the entire thing, and I am forever grateful.”
Wait, who is “you”? Host Jimmy Kimmel had the same question and doubled-backed to Randolph shortly after her win was announced, quipping after a brief break, “You forgot to mention your publicist’s name. I think your publicist needs a publicist is what it is.”
Without a mic, Randolph then desperately attempted to mouth the name Marla Farrell from her seat.

Oppenheimer blew up the 96th Academy Awards, taking a dominating seven trophies including Best Picture on Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Poor Things was next with four, and The Zone of Interest was the only other film to score multiple statuettes.
Oppenheimer’s Universal Pictures snagged the most Oscars by distributor (also seven), followed by Poor Things-driven Searchlight with five (including the Documentary Short winner The Last Repair Shop) and A24 and Toho with two apiece.

Looks like fourth time is truly a charm for Jimmy Kimmel and the Academy Awards.
Back hosting the Oscars for the second year in a row and the fourth time overall, the ABC Late Night front man took a show where most of the big winners were pretty predictable and gave it some much needed bite. “See kids, sometimes smoking is fine,” Kimmel quipped after Da’Vine Joy Randolph won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her cigarette imbibing role in The Holdovers.

“This is a love letter to Black women,” Da’Vine Joy Randolph said backstage at the Academy Awards, having just collected her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers.
Asked how important it feels to her to feel and be seen, Randolph said, “It’s imperative, because the people who’ve done it before me allow me to be in this position now, and so the type of work I do, my strive for authenticity, for quality, allows there to be a new standard set where we can tell universal stories in black and brown bodies, and it can be accepted and enjoyed amongst the masses. It’s not just Black TV or Black movies for Black people, instead of a universal performance that can be enjoyed by all.”
In the Alexander Payne-directed The Holdovers, Randolph stars as Mary, a cook in an East Coast boarding school.
