Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.
Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.
The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.

I am not sure that I liked what I saw in the first two episodes of the new FX miniseries A Murder at the End of the World. At first, it functions as a whodunnit, with the intention of turning the concept of films like Knives Out on its head. With its slow-burn pacing and a rather eerie atmosphere, it starts to borrow from films like The Others, but not the supernatural element. The enticing part of the series may seem to be the murder mystery aspect, but it’s the story of a girl who lives rather an unusual life in the series. Darby, a self-proclaimed cold case investigator, writes a book about her exploits and gets invited to a tech billionaire’s secret retreat out in the glacial wilderness. She wasn’t the only dignitary there. There was also Fangs, aka Bill, who ends up dead at the retreat,...

Readying to share an excerpt from her first book, an author stands at the podium and warns the room she’s going to start with the ending. “I was told you’re not meant to do that at these readings,” she says, “but I’m going to do it anyway.” Ultimately, Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) omits a few key details of her favored passage — she’s there to sell books, after all, and has to hook an audience who initially showed up to hear from another writer — but the choice speaks volumes about who she is and what her true crime story is designed to do. It’s not about whoever’s waiting at the end of the investigation; it’s not about studying a killer, learning from his twisted psyche, or even catching him. Instead, Darby’s account invites readers to reconsider what’s right in front of them,...

Season 4 of Netflix’s hit show “Emily in Paris” and Amazon Prime’s “Etoile” are two of the high profile U.S. productions tentatively scheduled to start shooting in January in the French capital ahead of the Olympic Games.
With the WGA strike over and SAG-AFTRA preparing to resume negotiations with studios, time is of the essence for producers who are hoping to slot their shoots before the start of the massive sports celebration this summer. From June to September, all shoots will be barred in Paris, while access to some posh areas around the Concorde and Trocadero will be restricted starting in March.
“Emily in Paris” Season 4 was initially scheduled to start shooting in the summer at the Cité du Cinema studios, where the last three seasons were filmed. But the Cité du Cinema has been booked for the Olympic Games starting in mid-November, so the series will shoot at the nearby Studios Monjoie.

Exclusive: Eric Fellner, Working Title co-chairman, and the creators of the hit Billy Elliot musical, have given their support to a non-replica production that will run at UK regional theatre, The Curve, Leicester, from July 7.
The Curve’s artistic chief Nikolai Foster, who’s also directing the update with Lucy Hind choreographing, met in recent days with Fellner and Stephen Daldry, the original director of the stage show and the popular 2000 film version that starred Jamie Bell in the titular role, for a metaphorical passing of the baton.
“The whole point is that Nikolai and the Curve wanted to do their own production,” Fellner told Deadline, adding that original creatives Lee Hall (book and lyrics), Elton John (music) and Peter Darling (choreography) “were all comfortable with them doing that.”
Fellner continued: “Within the contract there are certain things they can or can’t do like not changing the lyrics and the book,...

"West Side Story" premiered last December and quickly reached critical acclaim. The Steven Spielberg adaptation features Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as star-crossed lovers Tony and María; Ariana DeBose as María's best friend, Anita; David Alvarez as Sharks leader Bernardo; and Mike Faist as Riff, the leader of the Jets. Rita Moreno, who famously portrayed Anita in the original 1961 film, appears in the remake as Valentina.
The musical love story took award season by storm. At the Golden Globes, Zegler won best performance by an actress in a motion picture, musical, or comedy, and DeBose won best supporting actress in a motion picture. DeBose also won awards for the film at the 2022 Critics' Choice and SAG Awards. From Broadway stages to turning her first Oscar nomination into a win, Ariana DeBose has made Oscars history. DeBose won Best Supporting Actress during Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony, becoming the first openly queer person to ever win an Oscar in any acting category. She is only the second woman of Latin American heritage to win in the category, following in the footsteps of Rita Moreno, who also won for playing Anita in the original 1961 “West Side Story.” Further marking her milestones, she is also only the eighth Black woman to win in the category. Though she is a newcomer to Hollywood, she came to the Oscars as the frontrunner having already won the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards.
The actress faced stiff competition in the category, beating out Oscar winner Judi Dench for “Belfast,” Kirsten Dunst for “The Power of the Dog,” Jessie Buckley for “The Lost Daughter,...

A new iteration of “West Side Story” has arrived, courtesy of producer and director Steven Spielberg, who worked from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (“Lincoln”). After earning critical raves and a spot atop the AFI Top 10 Films of the Year list in 2021, and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Ariana DeBose, the film is an awards frontrunner with seven Oscar nominations and now it’s finally available to watch on streaming.
The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award winner Justin Peck choreographs the musical numbers in the film. The 2022 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around, thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor. Since 2009, PGA has forecast 9 of 12 Oscar champs.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on eight titles: “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Being the Ricardos” and “tick, tick…Boom!,” which were swapped out for “Drive My Car” and “Nightmare Alley” at the Oscars.

Ten years as a working actress on Broadway has given Ariana DeBose a grounded approach to the swell of accolades accompanying her performance as the iconic Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. Following a legacy of iconic performances, both on stage and film, DeBose is allowing herself to pave her own path, giving this moment of successes and critical appreciation a charming, honest, culturally modern spin.
Deadline: What was your first impression of the character of Anita growing up?
Ariana Debose: I grew up watching West Side Story on my grandmother’s television. Turner Classic Movies was playing it and I was really into old movies as a kid. That and soap operas with my grandmother because that’s what we did together.
Deadline: Which soap opera did you like to watch?
Debose: Days of Our Lives. I’m still invested in Marlena and John.

“Steven had said that he wasn’t going to make the film if he couldn’t cast it correctly.”
Thus, explains casting director Cindy Tolan, assembling the perfect ensemble was of existential importance to Spielberg’s revisited “West Side Story.” The goal was to capture all the charisma of the beloved 1961 original, while avoiding its much-criticized, inauthentic approach to ethnicity.
“I looked to my office and I said, ‘We are not going to be the reason this film does not get made.’” An early, viral social media posting kicked off an 18-month worldwide search, involving open calls and appointments from the U.S. to Puerto Rico and Australia.
All told, she claims, “we saw 30,000 humans,” and in no sense did any have to be professionals or even trained. What they had to be was “quadruple threats: They had to sing, dance and act. And the camera had to like them.

But the film’s casting director Cindy Tolan revealed the search that went into finding Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez as Anita and Bernardo, with DeBose initially declining a chance to audition and Alvarez, who had retired from acting, uncontactable.
Speaking to the press backstage after picking up a BAFTA award for casting for “West Side Story,” Tolan revealed that she was hired a year and a half early to pin down the five leads. “Because essentially, Steven [Spielberg] said, if we can’t find them, then we’re not going to make this movie. And so in the first three weeks of working and searching, we got Rachel Zegler’s tape […] that went that went viral [on social media].”
“You always think it’s going to be Maria, you always think Maria is going to take the longest.

For a brief time, while working on Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” designing an array of hand-crafted sets from the ’50s and ’60s in Angoulême, France, production designer Adam Stockhausen was also prepping his Oscar-nominated “West Side Story.” Stockhausen multi-tasked while readying for Steven Spielberg’s reinvention of the iconic Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim musical about the delicate dance between love and hate and the difficult immigrant experience.
“Steven had me do this early design phase where we locked in a lot of locations and we did the basic bones…and a proof of concept early,” said the Oscar-winning Stockhausen (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”). “And then I went away to do ‘French Dispatch,’ and every Sunday I would go into my office, crank up the Broadway cast album from ‘West Side Story,’ and get to work with my location scout and scenic illustrator and we would work away.”
