Exclusive updated with additional details: Boomerang co-creator Ben Cory Jones has acquired the shopping rights to Brianna Peppins’ YA novel Briarcliff Prep for series development.
The project will be co-written by Jones and Peppins. Both will produce alongside Cultivate Entertainment Partners Sean Mik’ael Butler and Patrick Strøm.
Briarcliff Prep is a coming-of-age story set in a space where the expectations of gender and race collide, familial responsibilities are tested, and sisterhood may be a saving grace.
Per the book’s synopsis, “set at a luxe, aspirational Historically Black Boarding School inspired by the author’s alma mater Spelman College, Briarcliff Prep is a captivating celebration of the friends we choose, the family we protect, and the love we owe ourselves.”
The novel was published by Disney Hyperion in 2022. The sequel, Briarcliff Prep: Sophomore Year, will be published by Disney Hyperion in 2024.

Executive producers of top Emmy contender comedy, drama and limited series weigh in on what shows they hope will see awards recognition this year.
Janine Sherman Barrois (“Claws”)
“I love ‘Insecure’ because it’s so bold and honest. Its relatability is universal and it might be one of the funniest shows on television.”
Jordan Cahan and David Caspe (“Black Monday”)
“What the Kings are doing on ‘The Good Fight’ is just crazy. Under the clever disguise of a legal procedural they’ve hidden the most brilliantly f—ed-up show on TV. The tone whips from sophisticated satire to social thriller to character study to goofy farce — while tackling impossible issues like race, gender, and politics through songs and soliloquies, courtroom battles and cartoons.” — Cahan
“ ‘Pen15’ is somehow hilarious and heartbreaking, broad and grounded, all at the same time. And it proves that an idea, which I’m sure some people told them was too sketchy,...

“Boomerang” has its writers’ offices in Universal City, but Ben Cory Jones considers his downtown Los Angeles home office his primary space. While he filled it with practical necessities such as a whiteboard and 1960s-style desk to force him to work, he also decked it out with a number of design touches, such as a gallery wall filled with mirrors and photos of icons including James Baldwin, Janelle Monae and Langston Hughes, to spark creativity.

The mood was unrepentantly positive at the Television Academy’s panel “Writing Lgbtqia Love and Romance on TV,” held April 30 at Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, as creatives gathered to discuss what it means to craft meaningful and nuanced Lgbtq+ love stories in the modern TV landscape.
Moderated by former “Army Wives” writer Rob Forman, the producers and writers on the panel seemed content to focus primarily on the positive, praising Peak TV and the surplus of content providers for allowing for more and more diverse lives – and romances – to be depicted.
“I get so excited creating stuff in 2019,” executive producer and writer of Netflix’s upcoming “Tales of the City” revival Lauren Morelli said. “There’s such a community and we’re all so desperate for representation. I think the more people that are getting to tell our stories, the more space there is to tell really specific stories.

Just six months ago, GLAAD released a study showcasing that Lgbtq+ representation had reached a record highs on television. Yet there is so much more to the conversation than simply seeing a character from that community on-screen: What storylines they get to explore and, to a degree, who is portraying them, is even more important.
“I just want to see a show about gay men living, laughing and f—ing — just living our lives, and it’s not all about our trauma,” said “Special” creator and star Ryan O’Connell at a “Writing Lgbtqia Love and Romance on TV” panel presented by the Television Academy’s Writers Peer Group on Tuesday.
O’Connell’s show, which is semi-autobiographical, centers on a character who is gay and has cerebral palsy, but who “just wants the basics [in life]: a boyfriend, a good relationship with his mom, a job where he’s valued,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the season finale of Boomerang.
When it was announced that Lena Waithe was teaming with Halle Berry to bring the wildly underrated ’90s rom-com to Bet as a television series, diehard fans of the original were giddy with excitement as the new iteration set out to struck a curious chord with the younger generation — some of whom have never heard of the TV show. With Ben Cory Jones as showrunner and a team of fresh talent in front of and behind the camera, the first 10 episodes of the series brought a new perspective and look to the continuation of the film starring Eddie Murphy as playboy Marcus Graham who learns to love like an actual adult. Waithe and Berry (who starred in the original) brought the story into 2019 with a raw and real sense of storytelling and tonight’s finale titled “Trust” had...

Fans of the 1992 romantic comedy “Boomerang” who are looking to see the original film’s cast appear on Bet’s upcoming sequel series shouldn’t hold their breath.
Well, no, you might see executive producer Halle Berry reprising her role. But as far as everyone else goes? We’ll have to wait and see, because Berry hasn’t asked her former co-stars to appear on Lena Waithe’s updated take on “Boomerang.”
“You might see me at some point,” Berry told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour Monday, with a little laugh.

In the lead up to this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Mindy Kaling noted that “Late Night,” the story of an aspiring writer who endures a “Devil Wears Prada”-like initiation into the world of comedy, is a familiar story about breaking into the entertainment business. But, the Indian-American Kaling noted, her version has one key difference.
“So much of this movie is about being a fan and being on the outside of the entertainment business,” Kaling told Variety. “That story has been told many, many, many times by 52-year-old white men, and I love all those movies. And as a comedy nerd I’ve always identified with them because it was the closest thing that I could identify with. There was no one like me making those kind of films.”

There are plenty of questions to be asked about what’s in store for television in the year 2019. Will Netflix be able to keep up with the scale of production they’ve established recently? Is there a physical limit to how many series Ryan Murphy can make at one time? What exactly is Apple’s plan for their original series, really?
One thing that’s known for sure: There’s going to be some really exciting stuff to watch (however you might end up watching it). From limited series we’ll cherish for their brief time on screen to shows we hope last for decades, 2019 looks like a repository for bold ideas and innovative storytelling, with major creative forces like Damon Lindelof, Jordan Peele, Ava DuVernay, Alex Garland, Patty Jenkins, Mimi Leder, and Jemaine Clement poised to bring their unique visions to the screen.

One of Boomerang's original stars will help bring the film to the small screen next year. Halle Berry has boarded BET's series adaptation of the 1992 movie as an executive producer, along with "The Chi" creator Lena Waithe, TVLine has learned.
The film starred Eddie Murphy as a womanizing, chauvinistic ad exec who realizes his new boss (Robin Givens) is basically a female version of himself. BET's adaptation — which received a 10-episode series order in April — will serve as a sequel of sorts, focusing on the son of Givens’ character and the daughter of Murphy's and Berry's characters as they try to step out of their parents’ shadows and make a legacy of their own.
"This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story," Waithe said in a statement.

Halle Berry and Lena Waithe have signed on as executive producers for the “Boomerang” TV series currently in the works at Bet.
Based on the 1992 American romantic comedy film in which Berry starred alongside Robin Givens and Eddie Murphy, this new series will follow the lives of Jacqueline Boyer’s son and Marcus and Angela Graham’s daughter as they try to step out of their parents’ shadows and make a legacy of their own.
“I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trail blazer in her own right,” Berry said. “I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen.”

At the Beverly Hills headquarters of Wme/Endeavor Content Tuesday, GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis disclosed a “bleak” assessment of how major Hollywood films told Lgbtq narratives in 2017. According to her organization’s sixth annual Studio Responsibility Index (Sri), 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros. released a combined 109 features last year, just 14 of which were Lgbtq-inclusive (12.8 percent). That’s an 18.4 percent decrease from 2016, when there were 23 such movies out of 125 possibilities.
Providing parts for recognizable lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer characters is the bare minimum GLAAD wishes to see from studios — each film would ideally also pass “The Vito Russo Test,” meaning those roles are vital to the plot, and the individuals are defined by more than their sexual orientation or gender identity. In both 2016 and 2017, only nine titles met “The Vito Russo Test” rubric.

Director Kay Cannon, whose feature debut in R-rated comedy “Blockers” featured a lesbian romance, said the original script did not include a gay character.
But after considering that teenage girls may be grappling with their sexuality, Cannon said she decided to write the character into the film and was later surprised there was no push back from the studio, Universal.
“I didn’t get a note,” Cannon said. “They were incredibly progressive.”
Despite the inclusion of Lgbtq characters in recent major releases like “Blockers” and “Love, Simon,” 2017 was not a good year for Lgbtq characters in film, according to a GLAAD report released Tuesday showing fewer films featuring Lgbtq characters compared with 2016.
The report was the subject of conversation Tuesday at Wme, where the agency partnered with GLAAD to host a panel. Cannon was one of several participating in the discussion on the state of Lgbtq inclusiveness in Hollywood films.
