There's a new king in town. It may have happened just as the movie is arriving on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, but "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has passed a majorly impressive box office milestone. Two and a half months after director Adam Wingard's follow-up to 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" hit theaters, it has officially passed 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" to become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse franchise.
According to Deadline, "Godzilla x Kong" has now amassed $570 million worldwide, taking it just past the $568.6 million total of "Skull Island." Wingard's second MonsterVerse film has earned $196.3 million domestically to go with $373.7 million internationally. The biggest difference is that "Skull Island" made a whopping $400 million of its total overseas in its day. The only film in the franchise to make more than "GxK" domestically was 2014's "Godzilla" ($200 million domestically/$529 million worldwide) directed by Gareth Edwards. That film kicked...

Fans have long been demanding a sequel to Nicolas Cage’s Face/Off, and while there was indeed a plan for it, somehow it never gets off the ground. Director Adam Wingard, who famously helmed two Godzilla films, even admitted he met with the actor.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire / Legendary Pictures
Even after all the campaign efforts to get a follow-up to the 1997 action thriller movie, Wingard focused on making a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but fans cannot blame him. Cage also loved the franchise that they ended up talking about it rather than Face/Off.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mothra made her surprise return and helped the movie's title characters put their differences aside. The iconic Kaiju perished in Godzilla: King of the Monsters courtesy of the evil King Ghidorah, making the apparent retcon confusing for many fans.
A Mothra egg was discovered shortly after her death, though an explanation for how it was transported into Hollow Earth has never been shared. So, was the Mothra we met a resurrected version of the one that died, the Titan that came out of the egg, or the true original?
Talking in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's "Art of" book (via SFFGazette.com), filmmaker Adam Wingard confirmed a big theory about Mothra and finally set the record straight on this apparent plot hole.

The Monsterverse just got a whole lot more intriguing with the confirmation of a new twist in the lore of Mothra as explained by director Adam Wingard. The revelation that the Mothra seen in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is not the same as the one from 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters adds depth to the character’s history and provides fans with fresh content to dissect. Mothra’s Grand Return This is essentially Mothra’s mother, Wingard revealed, explaining that The New Empire‘s version of Mothra is actually much older than the one fans are familiar with from King of...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have received mixed reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a disappointing 54% score), but it now sits atop the MonsterVerse as the franchise's most successful movie yet.
Despite being released on Digital platforms last month, the movie rampaged to a mighty $570 million at the global box office this weekend. As a result, it's surpassed Kong: Skull Island as the franchise's most successful entry to date.
With a surprisingly frugal $135 million budget - the lowest in the MonsterVerse's history - there's no denying that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a box office hit. Grossing $196 million domestically and $371.3 million internationally, Warner Bros. and Legendary have netted a tidy profit at a time theaters are struggling due to relatively few hit movies being released.
Here's how each MonsterVerse movie compares in terms of box office revenue:

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire that hit theaters in March 2024 amidst lots of hype has lived up to the lofty expectations from fans across the world. The 5th film in the MonsterVerse franchise, which is a follow-up to the 2021 blockbuster, sees Godzilla and Kong reunite to fight an unknown threat hidden within the Earth that poses grave danger to humans and Titans alike.

In 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man promised fans an "Untold Story," only for it to be very much the same as what we'd seen in Sam Raimi's movie.
While the trailers featured innovative Pov web-slinging scenes, those were largely absent from the finished product and what we did get proved largely underwhelming. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 upped the ante, though, delivering high-flying sequences more in line with Raimi's trilogy.
When Marvel Studios rebooted Peter Parker for the MCU, a great many changes were made to the character...including making him a "Friendly Neighbourhood" Spider-Man.
As a result, it wasn't until 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home that we got a true "final swing."
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, the plan is for Spider-Man 4 to feature web-slinging sequences more in line with what we saw before Marvel Studios' trilogy. This will surely be music to Spidey fans' ears as it was sorely missing...

The king of monsters is ruling the global box office. According to Deadline, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has surpassed its predecessors as the highest-grossing movie in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise.
After Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s disappointing run, which grossed only $58 million domestically and another $85 million from overseas markets, the Adam Wingard-directed Godzilla installment swooped in to save the studio.
While Furiosa failed to recoup its $170 million budget, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire smashed records, accumulating $570 million around the world. The film also beat the record held by the 2014 Godzilla movie.

Pictures)

Bad Boys: Ride or Die may have easily taken the top spot at the box office, but there’s a god and a king that may have something louder to say than Mike and Marcus. Per reports, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, hitting $570 million worldwide more than 10 weeks after first hitting theaters.
The previous champ of the MonsterVerse was 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which, according to The Numbers, topped out at $561 million (although Deadline reports it at $568.6 million). The 2014 Godzilla holds at $529 million, while 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were nowhere near the half billion dollar mark, with the latter having the franchise-low of $383 million.
Godzilla x Kong opened with $80 million domestically, which, while not hitting the mark set by 2014’s Godzilla, was enough to open at #1, a spot it held for its second week as well.

In a global box office that’s still licking its wounds from the strike, here’s something to scream about: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the highest grossing movie in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise at $570M around the world.
That beats previous Monsterverse champ 2017’s Kong Skull Island which stomped to $568.6M. Broken out New Empire‘s grosses are $373.7M abroad and $196.3M domestic. Overall, New Empire is the highest grossing Monsterverse title in 35 markets including Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico and UAE.
Props here to Warner Bros marketing, but also the global distribution team. Realize this: Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was originally on Easter weekend. Then the Culver City lot moved that movie up to March 22. This created a golden opportunity for Warners to step in and take over holy weekend, which has historically been a rich launchpad for the studio with Clash of the Titans,...

Following the announcement of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard's shock exit from the MonsterVerse last month, Legendary has found itself a new director to helm the sequel to their latest box-office behemoth. As reported by THR, I Am Mother director Grant Sputore has been tapped to steer the Kaiju franchise's next Titan team-up, which is being written by Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse scribe Dave Callaham.
Precious little is known about the future instalment in Legendary's MonsterVerse series, though it is being described as a direct continuation of the franchise, built around Godzilla, Kong, and various other Titans. Before Wingard's departure from the project, the director had teased that a third Godzilla x Kong collab would likely see our beloved irradiated lizard take centre stage, with the tantalising prospect of an appearance from legendary Kaiju Destoroyah having...

We recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but we'd later learn that Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, would no longer direct the project after initially being attached to return. His departure was described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
Now, THR (via SFFGazette.com) the next instalment in the popular franchise has enlisted a new director, with Grant Sputore set to take the helm.
Sputore doesn't have much experience, having come from the world of commercials, but he does have one feature under his belt: The 2019 sci-fi movie I Am Mother starring Hilary Swank.

I Am Mother director Grant Sputore is the filmmaker charged with the next Godzilla x Kong film, as Adam Wingard opts to make Onslaught instead.

Adam Wingard obliterated the kaiju-sized box office earlier this year with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," the follow-up film to his moderate hit, "Godzilla vs. Kong." Wingard, a director who cut his teeth in the horror genre, was a fresh and exciting new voice to take over everyone's favorite monstrous, radioactive lizard and gigantic gorilla antiheroes. A few weeks back, Wingard announced that he would not be returning for whatever the next installment of Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise would bring, sending the studio on a hunt for their next director. It's a difficult task, to be sure, as Wingard brought some serious silliness to the franchise, opting for films that feel like spending millions of dollars to bring a playfully imaginative game of clashing titans to life.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

Legendary’s Monsterverse has found a new master of disaster. The studio has tapped Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical outing in the franchise following March’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Sputore came up from the world of commercials, and as a features director helmed the sci-fi movie I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank. The film bowed at Sundance before hitting Netflix in 2019.
The new Monstervese feature is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans. The script comes from prolific genre scribe Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Sputore’s hiring follows news that Adam Wingard would not return after directing both the latest installment and Godzilla vs. Kong (2022). Upon the release of Godzilla x Kong, Wingard told The Hollywood Reporter he hoped to return for another film to complete a trilogy,...

Mechagodzilla is undoubtedly one of the coolest aspects of the MonsterVerse. The villain introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong gave us some visually extravagant scenes and proved a tough adversary for the Titans. Surprisingly, the villain was not initially planned for Godzilla vs. Kong but for another MonsterVerse project.

Adam Wingard brought new life into the Monsterverse with his two films Godzilla Vs Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. His films followed up on what was laid down in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Wingard brought back the fun and scale of a Kaiju film with the large-scale battle between Godzilla and Kong in his first film and expanded the world further with The New Empire.

Apprehensions regarding the fate of Marvel Studios post Avengers: Endgame went away right after a cinema-defining experience brought over by Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third iteration of the Tom Holland-led trilogy climbed up box office ranks swiftly while also bringing the multiverse into full force. Godzilla has always been super cool, but what about a Godzilla that's actually a mechsuit? Well, Mechagodzilla was originally intended as an antithesis for the king of monsters, representing attempts to squash a force of nature that wreaks havoc or acts as a benevolent mediator, depending on who you ask. The Gundam version of Godzilla first appeared in 1974's "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla," where a bunch of aliens from Black Hole Planet 3 built a massive robot monster to destroy Godzilla and take over the planet. After thwarted attempts to take down the Og prehistoric beast, humans took matters into their own hands to craft a high-endurance, super-powerful cyborg in 2002's "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla," who teamed up with other beasts like Mothra to put Godzilla down (and failed).

However, recent updates suggest a significant shift for the franchise’s future. Director Adam Wingard’s next moves According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard will not return for the upcoming sequel, as his schedule now focuses on a project called Onslaught, an action-thriller developed under A24. Despite an amiable split with Legendary Pictures, this scheduling conflict steers Wingard away from another MonsterVerse film. In discussing the MonsterVerse, Wingard has been an...

Our choice for the greatest Kaiju movie of all time, Godzilla Minus One, has gotten a surprise release on Netflix! In most territories, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, you can find the movie streaming in Dolby Vision in both the original Japanese version and an alternate English dub prepared by the distributors (we recommend watching it in Japanese).
This comes hot on the heels of an article we ran a few weeks ago bemoaning the fact that the film was hard to see in North America. So far no domestic physical media release has been announced. You can buy the movie through most digital retailers now too, including the black and white version, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color (which is not currently on Netflix).

We have an update on Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' search for a director to take the helm of Spider-Man 4, and it seems Ms. Marvel and Bad Boys: Ride or Die filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah may indeed be in contention to land the gig.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, El Arbi and Fallah - who infamously helmed the Batgirl movie Warner Bros. decided to scrap as a tax write-off - are "in the mix" to direct the Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up, but it sounds like there are other candidates.
Richtman also indicates that directors with "a current connection with Sony and Marvel Studios" are being looked at, and the studios may also be focused on enlisting "an indie director like they did with Jon Watts."

Peter Jackson’s King Kong was the ninth entry in the King Kong franchise. The film remains Jackson’s only monster movie and he didn’t return to direct a sequel film. But he was interested to see a sequel of the film from one director who has a lifelong fascination with monsters. Jackson thought it would be great if Guillermo del Toro helmed the sequel, after hearing rumors of it at San Diego Comic-Con in 2014.

MonsterVerse is currently one of the most significant franchises in pop culture. It kickstarted with 2014’s Godzilla and went on to produce 4 films and 2 TV series. However, there is one film in the franchise that was initially conceived as a different venture, Kong: Skull Island.
The 2017 film was initially planned as a sequel to 2005’s King Kong. After the critical and commercial success of Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake, he thought of making a sequel. Co-incidentally, the director of the last two MonsterVerse films, Adam Wingard, was slated to direct it.

When Marvel Studios teamed with Sony Pictures and agreed to share Spider-Man, the decision was quickly made to focus on villains the web-slinger hadn't faced on screen before.
Spider-Man: Homecoming featured Shocker and The Vulture and even set the stage for Scorpion's eventual debut by introducing Mac Gargan. Spider-Man: Far From Home shifted focus to Mysterio, only for Spider-Man: No Way Home to pit Tom Holland's Peter Parker against the baddies from previous Spider-Man movies.
The MCU hero battled Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard; however, as exciting as that was for fans, it seemingly closed the door on new versions of those baddies appearing on Earth-616.
Heck, Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn even confirmed his Variant doesn't exist on that world!

Rumours about who will direct Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah among those supposedly in the mix.
Jon Watts helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home but appears ready to move on from the web-slinger. Despite also leaving The Fantastic Four, Kevin Feige is said to be keen on Watts returning to the MCU for another project.
Appearing at a recent screening event for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fallah was asked to speak on the Spider-Man 4 rumours and his reaction (refusing to answer the question while saying "I can't talk about that...") may be telling.
While we're not suggesting this has confirmed his and El Arbi's involvement with the movie, it seems highly likely the duo are likely contenders.

Earlier this week, we learned that Adam Wingard will no longer direct the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel. He previously helmed Godzilla vs. Kong, but cut his teeth on smaller action movies like You're Next and The Guest.
Today, we bring word from scooper @MyTimeToShineH that Wingard is in the running to helm Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
His potential hiring would almost certainly divide opinions, though it's worth noting that Wingard currently has plans to helm a new action thriller, Onslaught, which is prepping for a fall shoot. That alone likely takes him out of the running.
The director also seems far more interested in finally bringing Thundercats to the big screen.

Despite the enormous success of his recent endeavor, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard is stepping away from the giant monster action for now. Wingard Exits Amid Timing Issues According to The Hollywood Reporter, the separation between Adam Wingard and Legendary Entertainment is described as amicable and primarily stemmed from scheduling issues. The studio is eager to capitalize on the momentum of their blockbuster, but Wingard’s packed schedule couldn’t accommodate this urgency.

Dan Stevens is a busy man. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire landed in theaters at the end of March, where Stevens played charming leading man Trapper, then anarchic horror Abigail arrived hot on its heels in April. Next up, August brings strange horror/sci-fi Cuckoo, which sees Stevens playing a deranged scientist. Between press tours, festivals, and new projects, he’s got a lot going on. And we get the sense he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Describing himself as an “experience hound,” Stevens is a man who thrives on challenges. He began his career in theater, made it big as tragic heartthrob Matthew Crawley in British drama Downton Abbey, and has genre-hopped ever since, from action-thriller The Guest, to playing Sir Lancelot in family fun Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. The MonsterVerse has, somewhat quietly, become one of the most reliable franchises going in Hollywood at the moment. For a full decade dating back to 2014's "Godzilla" right up through this year's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," these films have built up a loyal audience with no signs of fatigue on the part of the viewers. While Warner Bros. and Legendary are quickly looking to get a new installment going, they will need a new director, as we recently learned that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the helm. So, who should take his place?
Wingard is the only filmmaker to direct two MonsterVerse installments, having helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" as well as "The New Empire," which now ranks as the highest-grossing "Godzilla" movie ever. So sure, the studio would probably have liked him to return, but he's busy with other projects. Besides, that just opens the...

It was recently announced that Warner Bros./Legendary are officially moving forward with a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but it seems Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong, was set to return.
Was being the operative word.
According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released a couple of months ago as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. And while the movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, the fans loved it and the movie became one of the biggest titles on the box office this year, earning a lot of money. The movie was directed by Adam Wingard and it was actually expected that the director would remain with the franchise, as per our earlier reports. But, sad news comes from Hollywood, as it has been confirmed that Wingard quit the franchise (for now), so he won’t be the director of the planned Godzilla x Kong 3 movie.

There are roughly two types of Adam Wingard fans. There are the folks that know him from the MonsterVerse franchise, where he’s made films such as “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” Then there are people who know him from his earlier films like his breakout “You’re Next” and the incredible “The Guest.” The former is going to be a bit bummed by the latest Wingard news while the latter are going to be psyched.

Who's ready to start their midweek, Hump Day grind on a bit of a mixed note? The good news is that I'll never again use the phrase "Hump Day grind" because, frankly, that just sounds unbearably filthy. Okay, the real good news is that Warner Bros. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the next installment will have to do so without the involvement of director and writer Adam Wingard.

The director of the last two Godzilla and Kong movies has opted to not return for a third, as Adam Wingard focuses on other projects.
Given that Adam Wingard has a film slate that is dauntingly long, it was always pretty clear that something would have to give. As well as a presumed third instalment in the Godzilla and Kong joined franchise (feel free to join those two names with a Vs or an X or whatever works for you), the in-demand director has a laundry list of other projects.
There’s a sequel to John Woo’s beloved 1997 action movie, Face/Off that we know is in the works. That one seems to be gathering a little pace too, with reports emerging last month stating that both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are willing to reprise their roles from the original film. That one seems to be gathering a little pace too, with reports emerging last month stating that both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are willing to reprise their roles from the original film. Adam Wingard will not return to direct the “Godzilla x Kong” sequel, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The filmmaker behind Legendary’s last two MonsterVerse hits — 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” and 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” — won’t return for a third installment. However, the door remains open for Wingard to return in the future.
The filmmaker didn’t have a deal in place to return, and will next direct “Onslaught” for A24 with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall. Wingard will direct from a script that he wrote with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.
Wingard also has a “ThunderCats” movie in development at Warner Bros. centered on the 1985-1990 animated TV show about feline humanoids fighting to survive on a desolate planet against incredible odds.
“Godzilla x Kong” is expected to surpass 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island” as...

The site reports that Adam Wingard, who directed both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, will Not be returning to direct the upcoming follow-up to Godzilla x Kong.
THR notes, “The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.”

Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is writing the upcoming sixth movie in the Monsterverse franchise. We have no idea if it’ll be a follow-up to Adam Wingard’s two movies,...

THR reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard will not return for the sequel. According to insiders, the split is amicable and was due to scheduling issues, but the door remains open for Wingard to come back to the franchise down the line.
The studio had been keen on Wingard returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, but no deal was in place for him to do so. The director had been open to returning, previously saying, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. There’s also ways to continue to innovate the stylized approach to the MonsterVerse, and what’s great about the MonsterVerse is that it’s allowed so many different directors to approach it with their unique style and color palette.” However, Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall,...

Godzilla and Kong have smashed their last building for Adam Wingard. At least for now.
Wingard, who has directed the last two of Legendary’s hit MonsterVerse movies, will not be returning for a third installment, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.
Wingard is coming off directing and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, which has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its March 29 domestic opening. Wingard, who didn’t have a deal for any new installment, said he had more stories to tell during the press tour but also unveiled a new original feature project that he wanted to tackle before another monster movie. That project, an action thriller titled Onslaught, was picked up in a competitive sale by A24 and is prepping for a fall shoot.
