Exclusive: Willy Wonka, the eccentric founder of the Wonka Chocolate Factory from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has been played by Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp and Timothée Chalamet on the big screen.
He’s now set to come to the small-screen in a much different way.
Deadline understands that Netflix is preparing a reality competition series based on the Roald Dahl story. This comes after the streamer acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021.
The expansive project is the latest example of a burgeoning trend in the unscripted market in the U.S. – The Bake-Off.
We hear that Netflix went out to a number of production companies, believed to include American Idol producer Fremantle, Wall to Wall, the British production company behind Who Do You Think You Are?, Nobody’s Hero, the production company behind Netflix’s Bullsh*t: The Game Show and Snack vs. Chef, and The Garden, which was...

The popular video game Poppy Playtime is following in the footsteps of Five Nights at Freddy’s, THR reports, with Legendary Entertainment developing a movie adaptation.
“Beating out several competitive offers, Legendary has closed an aggressive deal with Mob Entertainment to develop and produce a live-action feature adaptation of Poppy Playtime, a horror video game featuring the toy-turned-monster,” the website reports.
The Hollywood Reporter reminds, “Featuring shades of Willy Wonka, Toy Story and Gremlins, the first person video game sees the player acting as a former employee of a faded toy brand who, thanks to a cryptic letter, is drawn back to an abandoned facility only to quickly discover it has become home to a host of toys, including Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, and CatNap, that have taken on a life of their own. Players have to decipher clues, solve puzzles and use gadgets to unravel the mystery and get out alive.

Apple’s Crushing iPad Ad Sparks Outrage Online. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Actor Hugh Grant ripped into tech giant Apple over their latest iPad Ad, which showed a myriad of creative tools being crushed with an industrial-sized hydraulic press. The ad for the new iPad Pro triggered an uproar on social media on Wednesday, May 8, after many perceived it as a subliminal message of technology replacing human creativity.
The minute-long Ad called Crush, which dropped on Tuesday, May 7, showed a heavy-duty machine pulverizing all creative materials, including musical instruments, sculpture and an analogue camera, as the soundtrack of the Sonny and Cher 1971 tune “All I Ever Need Is You” plays in the background.
The Apple commercial sparked outrage online as many opined it implied generative AI can easily replace human creativity. Several social media users took offense to the ad, rendering the creative tools superfluous in the age of technology. Among...

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the most profitable box office blockbusters of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list will contain a total of 10 titles and, as you will see, Disney falls short in this list (unlike the box office bombs list), but there are a lot of animated films there and quite a few surprises. This list doesn’t account for the total gross earnings of a movie but speaks about the profit made by the movie based on the budget and the earnings, which is a thing...

Josh O’Connor has his sights set on his dream role: playing a “darker version” of Willy Wonka.
Much like his “Challengers” co-star and “West Side Story” alum Mike Faist, O’Connor is looking to lean into the musical theater elements of the famed fictional chocolatier. Timothée Chalamet most recently played the Roald Dahl character in “Wonka,” with Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder leading other iterations of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
In a recent WSJ Magazine video, O’Connor revealed that Wonka is his ideal part.
“I would love to play Willy Wonka, but like a dark Willy Wonka,” he said. “I know they’ve just made a ‘Wonka’ film with Timothée Chalamet, but I would really like to play a story of darker version of him.”
According to O’Connor, the original portrayal of the character by actor Wilder is a haunting performance.
“I think Gene Wilder’s version of him is very dark.

You’ll almost immediately feel the vibes through the first two acts of Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World. Mohr’s film is a bloody, vicious kick to the solar plexus. The script drives its foot into the wound and then keeps applying pressure, almost as a way to test the audience’s resolve.
That’s where Boy Kills World may come to a crossroads for its viewership. Either you will embrace the sudden acute aggression, pressing the foot on the pedal, or you will border on torture porn violence. Or be so turned off by it to the point of completely giving up on Mohr’s film.
As for me, I’ll take Mohr’s blood-spattering dose of glorious, gory, comic carnage that would make Jackson Pollack jealous.

Timothée Chalamet had a dream run at the box office, with his last two films Wonka and Dune: Part Two earning huge numbers globally. The actor has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now and has a slate of high-profile projects in the pipeline. His next project is the James Mangold-directed Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet has reportedly decided to use his own singing voice in the biopic instead of lip-syncing to Dylan’s songs. The actor had also flexed his vocal cords in last year’s musical comedy Wonka. A statement from director Paul King about Chalamet’s singing talents might be the reason why Mangold was sure of the Call Me By Your Name star playing Bob Dylan.

Timothée Chalamet’s journey in Hollywood has been an inspiring one. From making his name as a young star in independent films to bagging huge mainstream projects like Dune and Wonka, the actor has proved that he has the personality and talent to juggle both worlds with aplomb.
Timothée Chalamet in Dune
With the recently released Dune 2, Chalamet has further showcased his growth as an actor through the evolution of his character, Paul Atreides. But the Oscar nominee’s casting was criticized when he was initially signed on for the role by Denis Villeneuve. The director, though, was steadfast in his reasoning behind the decision and elaborated on why he was insistent on only Chalamet playing the role.
The Dune Ensemble Was Created Around Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides
It is difficult to imagine anyone other than Timothée Chalamet portraying the central character Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise.

Freddie Highmore decided to return to his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character in a new spoof, however, the legendary factory was looking less like a chocolate wonderland and more like the failed fan experience.
During the actor’s recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he jokingly debuted the trailer for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Part Two, which sees Charlie Bucket giving two children a tour of the candy factory that he got from Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka in the 2005 movie.
“Hello, children! My name is Charlie Bucket and welcome to my chocolate factory,” Highmore said as a greenscreen behind him fell down, revealing a sparsely decorated building that resembled the now-infamous Willy Wonka-themed immersive experience in the U.K. that reportedly left children in tears. “Pretty sweet, huh?” the actor added in the clip.

And the ones who lived lived happily ever after. The end.

The six-episode limited series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has reached its conclusion, bringing the story of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne to a close, if only for the time being. Heading into the reunion series, there was little doubt Rick and Michonne would join together again and kick a staggering amount of butt along the way. Would they survive said butt-kickings? Another question entirely. Plot: The life and career of Gene Wilder are remembered by his friends and colleagues.
Review: Gene Wilder was a one-of-a-kind talent. While it seems like he’s mostly remembered these days for playing Willy Wonka (with his performance inspiring Timothee Chalamet’s recent take), there was a lot more to him than just that one film. For one thing, his cinematic partnership with Mel Brooks resulted in three all-time classics: The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Plus, he and Richard Pryor made an iconic mismatched duo in a slew of films (some better than others), while Wilder directed several highly successful films on his own.
In this loving tribute to the late icon, director Ron Frank pulls back the curtain to dip into both Wilder’s creative process and sometimes tragic life. Pulling from an audiobook he recorded of his memoirs, the film is distinguished because Wilder himself tells much of the story.

Are you a fan of Willy Wonka? That seems unimportant if you were at a Willy Wonka-themed event in Glasgow. The event turned out to be so dire, so terrifying, and so extremely unsettling that the attendees actually called the police.
Last month, Glasgow, Scotland, hosted an unlicensed event called Willy’s Chocolate Experience, which was based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The objective of this event was to provide an ‘immersion experience’ into the world of Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory. It was promoted with AI images and advertisements that promised an ‘enchanted’ day at the Candy Man’s factory.

Ultimately, as we now know, it turned out to be something seriously disappointing. Families shelled out more than $40 for a ticket to explore a warehouse full of cheaply decorated sets, actors who looked disheveled,...

An ex-Nickelodeon writer and former assistant to Dan Schneider is adding to the toxic workplace claims that are being leveled against the man once dubbed “the Willy Wonka of television” by sharing that he was her “psychological tormentor” and allegedly caused her to have significant health issues.

Timothée Chalamet may not have got the part of Marvel’s Spider-Man, but he’s progressing in his career at a pace that Tom Holland can only dream of. With the double success of Wonka and Dune: Part Two, Chalamet has set a box office record after decades. He is the lead in the top two highest-grossing films in the domestic market over the last eight months.

Actor John Travolta’s worldwide fame began when he starred in two cultural paradigm-shifting films: Saturday Night Fever, and Grease. The star achieved a rare feat that few actors had done: staying at the top two spots at the domestic box office within eight months. However, now that record seems to be broken by Timothée Chalamet.
Timothée Chalamet’s starring roles in Wonka and the recent Dune: Part Two have made him a star like no other. The films were at the top spot in their opening weeks and only slightly slowed down with new releases. While Wonka grossed $218 million domestically in its lifetime run, Dune: Part Two currently stands at over $494 million and is only expected to earn more in the coming weeks due to less competition.

Don Lemon’s agent has denied allegations that he submitted a list of extravagant demands to X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk before his planned show was canceled on the social media platform.
Claims published in the New York Post on Friday alleged that Lemon had sent a “wish list” to Musk as they negotiated details of Lemon’s show to be hosted on X. The demands allegedly included an $8 million salary in addition to a $5 million upfront payment, a Tesla cybertruck, equity stake in X and the right to approve any changes in X policy as it related to news content.
Lemon’s agent, UTA’s Jay Sures, denied the claims, telling The Post: “This is absolute, complete utter nonsense without an iota of truth to it.” (The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to UTA for additional comment.)

The Elon Musk-Don Lemon war continued today, as both sides tweaked each other’s tail over their aborted programming deal.
Lemon had the first at-bat, sending out a dig on X.
“Every time @elonmusk tweets, a subscriber gets his wings. Tune in Monday.” Lemon will continue on the X platform, even though his remuneration will come from clicks and sponsorships rather than a salary and perks.
“That was followed by a Musk retort: “Don “Veruca Salt” and a lemon image.”
The “Veruca Salt” insult likens Lemon to the Willy Wonka character of the same name, an over-indulged and manipulative young girl who shows no gratitude.
That slap stems from earlier reports indicating Lemon had a lengthy wish list while negotiating for his one-and-done show on the X platform. They allegedly included a free Tesla Cybertruck, a $5 million upfront payment on top of an $8 million salary, an equity stake in the multibillion-dollar company,...

A new musical is hoping to turn a disastrous Willy Wonka experience into a golden ticket.
Willy Fest: A Musical Parody will take inspiration from a Scottish event that went viral last month for all the wrong reasons. The event was billed as an “immersive experience” that would put Willy Wonka fans into a “magical realm.” Its organizers used lush AI-generated photos to attract customers, who upon arriving, found themselves in a drab wearhouse customers compared to a meth lab.
Willy Fest is planned as a live event for late 2024, and hails from producer Richard Kraft, known for ABC’s The Little Mermaid Live, who will produce via his Kraft-Engel Productions. He has assembled a team of writers and musicians to bring the project to fruition.

A new film uses the late actor’s voice to illustrate a career of neurotic humor on the big screen and a gentleness in real life
Generations of viewers first got to know Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and with a new documentary about the beloved actor, director Ron Frank argues that that’s as good a place to start as any.
The twinkling strains of Pure Imagination open the affectionately wrought Remembering Gene Wilder, transporting the audience back into fond memories of the candyman’s immortal introduction: he hobbles out to meet his adoring public with cane in hand, staggers a bit, starts to stumble, then somersaults himself into a sprightly upright stance. Like so many of Wilder’s finest moments, it was a surprise to his scene partners proving his nimble versatility as performer. He could mine humor from tension, aggravation or anxiety, but his desire to keep...

In the run-up to the release of last December’s “Wonka,” Timothée Chalamet made a surprise visit to New York’s Hudson Yards for a screening of the fantasy musical for kids enrolled in After-School All-Stars. With the holiday season in full swing, the 28-year-old actor handed out gift bags filled with Xboxes, Nikes and, naturally, chocolate bars. It was a plan he concocted on his own and was followed by similar events, such as a January visit to a Minnesota high school, where he took selfies with students from the drama program.
“He took every kid’s hand who came. He took a photograph with everybody who asked him, which was pretty much everyone,” recalls “Wonka” producer David Heyman. “That was about his heart. But he’s also very savvy about marketing. He gets very engaged and brings ideas to the table.”
Chalamet is that rare performer who appeals to audiences of all ages.

Down to the wire, awards movies are still being rolled out on digital platforms. Two cherished nominees — one an international film, the other a documentary — have debuted this week. Even though it won’t affect either movie’s Oscar odds (voting closed last week), their premieres should be a blessing to all the completists out there.
The contender to watch this week: “Perfect Days”
Three-time Oscar nominee Wim Wenders directed this sublime slice-of-life drama about an unassuming Tokyo janitor (Koji Yakusho) with a quiet daily routine that includes watering his seedlings, visiting the same stores and restaurants, and choosing a cassette tape to hear on his drive to work. “Perfect Days” follows two weeks in the protagonist’s life, one of which involves a series of disruptions that rattle his stasis. The movie will compete for Best International Feature Film at Sunday’s Oscars. It’s currently playing in a handful of theaters,...

She continued, “It’s a picture of Timothée, who she thought was her dad, because it looks like my husband, and it says, ‘Will you Wonka my Willy?’ … She doesn’t get it. She’s like, ‘Oh it’s Willy Wonka.

The person behind the failed Willy Wonka U.K. “immersive experience” is speaking out after the event went viral on social media.
Billy Coull’s firm House of Illuminati was responsible for the failed fan attraction Willy’s Chocolate Experience — which was inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but not affiliated with the book or movies.
The event that promised to transport fans into a “magical realm” ended up leaving some children in tears and other customers comparing it to a meth lab and calling the police, which Coull said he takes full responsibility for.

Ever since people saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it has been somewhat of a dream to visit Willy Wonka’s incredible, yet fictional, chocolate factory. How much fun it would’ve been to get to eat the candy growing on trees, to take a boat ride in the chocolate river, and to try the gum that tastes like a three-course meal? Kaledonia Pictures, the production company making Wonka experience-inspired film The Unknown, appears to be rather new, with its website only appearing a matter of days ago.
The past day has brought a new twist to the ongoing saga of the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, which went viral in late February: a production company called Kaledonia Pictures is working on a film loosely based on it, called The Unknown. It’s said to be some sort of supernatural horror about a “renowned illustrator and his wife who are haunted by the tragic death of their son,” and encounter an “unknowable evil” in the Scottish Highlands.
Filmmakers hurriedly cashing in on events isn’t new – hence the assorted horror films based on the newly-out-of-copyright Steamboat Willie that are currently in the works.
What is somewhat odd about The Unknown, however, is that Kaledonia Pictures has almost no internet footprint whatsoever.

The Unknown, the villain at the viral Willy Wonka Experience is getting their own horror movie, because of course they are. More on the story below.
Only a week after Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Experience went viral, a new horror film centred on The Unknown has been announced. The film will simply be titled The Unknown and will follow a couple who have recently lost their son.
Photos from the experience, including one of The Unknown, spread online like wildfire after the police were reportedly called to the event which left children in tears and parents furious. The event was marketed with highly misleading, AI-generated artwork. The company behind the event, House of Illuminati, have promised full refunds to visitors.
The news of the new horror film comes via Bloody Disgusting, who report that Scotland-based production company Kaledonia Pictures is working on it. The Unknown has bugger all to do...

By now, you’ve likely seen the “Willy Wonka Experience” going viral throughout the Internet.
The event which was hosted in Glasgow, called “Willy’s Chocolate Experience,” used false AI art to advertise what was meant to be an immersive, Willy Wonka-themed experience, and the resulting videos of the experience revealed that it as actually a low-budget, widely mocked mess in a sparsely decorated warehouse with character actors hired from Indeed.
Videos soon went viral of the event on social media, including children looking scared and weeping.
Now, a film production company is getting ahead of the viral sensation by announcing The Unknown, a horror movie coming from Scotland-based film production company Kaledonia Pictures.

It’s a longstanding tradition for the horror world to capitalize on trends and turn literally anything and everything into a horror movie, so it’s no big surprise that a horror movie based on the viral “Willy Wonka Experience” has already been announced. It’s titled The Unknown, announced this morning by Scotland-based film production company Kaledonia Pictures.
The unofficial “Willy Wonka Experience” took the internet by storm last week (read all about it here), essentially becoming this year’s answer to the disastrous Fyre Festival. Long story short, AI-generated artwork was employed to lure the unsuspecting Glasgow public into what looked to be an immersive, Willy Wonka-themed experience ripped straight out of the movies, but what they instead found was a warehouse sparsely decorated with dollar store decorations and populated by characters that looked like they were pulled out of, well, horror movies.
