Disney’s live-action remake of Moana has finally found its star. Catherine Laga‘aia will take on the titular role, starring opposite Dwayne Johnson, who will reprise his character as the demigod Maui.
The original musical film released in 2016, and has become a beloved narrative in Disney’s arsenal of animated stories. A separate, animated sequel to Moana was announced last month and is due out Nov. 27.
“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said the 17-year-old from Sydney, Australia, in a statement.

How far will they go this time around?
On Wednesday, Disney released the first teaser for “Moana 2,” the studio’s anticipated sequel to the blockbuster hit “Moana.” The animated film – which was originally designed as a television series for Disney+ before being turned into a feature project and dated for this year – once again stars Auli’i Cravalho as the title character and Dwayne Johnson as the outlandish demigod Maui.
Here’s the logline, provided by Disney: Moana and Maui reunite three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

A sequel to hit Disney musical Moana arrives in November. Take a look at the first Moana 2 trailer.
Though Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has a string successful films to his name, few have embedded themselves in the public consciousness like Disney musical Moana. The film was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2016. In fact, the biggest surprise is that it has taken this long for a sequel to materialize.
The first film follows the titular girl as she teams up with demigod Maui to stop a curse he accidentally unleashed.
A live-action remake is also in the works. While Johnson will reprise his role, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the titular character, will not return for the live-action version. Original screenwriter Jared Bush will return to pen the script together with Dana Ledoux Miller. The film is scheduled to be released on the 10th July 2026.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? In 2016, audiences heeded the call of "Moana," capping off a fantastic year for Disney Animation that also saw eventual Best Animated Feature Film Oscar winner "Zootopia" top over a billion dollars at the box office. Closing in on a decade later, however, the House That Mickey Built has fallen on harder times after suffering one of its costliest box office misfires ever with "Strange World" and releasing what was intended to be the crown jewel in its 100th-anniversary celebration, "Wish," to middling reviews and even worse financial returns. It's under these circumstances that Bob Iger, fresh off having un-retired from his position as Disney's CEO, has announced further adventures with both the furry members of the Zootopia Police Department (Zpd) and the studio's beloved Pacific Islander princess.

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that the first trailer for its upcoming animated sequel, Moana 2, will be released online tomorrow, and star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has taken to social media to share the first theatrical poster.
Johnson will reprise the role of shapeshifting Polynesian Demigod Maui, alongside Auli'i Cravalho, who will once again provide the voice of the title character.
The Moana sequel was originally envisioned as a Disney+ series, but studio execs were said to be so impressed with writer-director David G. Derrick Jr.'s work on the initial episodes that they decided to revamp his ideas for a single big-screen feature.
There is also a live-action remake of Moana in the works, which is currently set for a 2026 release. Johnson will return as Maui, but Cravalho will not be portraying her character.
Johnson recently revealed that an actress has been cast in the role, but has yet to be officially announced.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Supporting actors J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, two-time former nominee Cheryl Hines and Tracey Ullman will also compete in the main acting categories, as well as a posthumous submission for Richard Lewis, who died in February.

A thoroughly implausible yarn about a Mexican cartel leader who hires a lawyer to arrange his transition is carried along by its cheesy Broadway energy
Anglo-progressives and US liberals might worry about whether or not certain stories are “theirs to tell”. But that’s not a scruple that worries French auteur Jacques Audiard who, with amazing boldness and sweep, launches into this slightly bizarre yet watchable musical melodrama of crime and gender, set in Mexico. It plays like a thriller by Amat Escalante with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a touch of Almodovar.
Argentinian trans actor Karla Sofia Gascon plays Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a terrifyingly powerful and ruthless cartel leader in Mexico, married to Jessi (Selena Gomez), with two young children. Manitas is intrigued by a high-profile murder trial in which an obviously guilty defendant gets off due to his smart and industrious lawyer...

It’s no secret that sequel films typically send people running to movie theater seats. They’re a safe bet for a studio like Walt Disney — if audiences loved an original film, they’re sure to enjoy a new adventure with the same charismatic characters and the addition of some new ones (preferably one that can be turned into profitable theme park plushies). For better or worse, Disney has boarded the sequel train and doesn’t seem to be hopping off anytime soon. For the next solid three years, the studio has multiple sequel projects slated to drop — ranging anywhere between the second and fifth film of a franchise. While it can be nice to revisit fan-favorite universes like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Toy Story,’ there’s also a major demand for Disney to return to their original storytelling roots. Walt Disney himself was incredibly opposed to sequels, saying he always had...

When Disney announced that they were going to do Mufasa: The Lion King, audiences were particularly not excited about the idea of a prequel. While the 2019 Lion King adaptation was a big hit at the box office, fans of the original animated classic were not happy with the photorealistic approach of the animals and how it took them out of the emotionality of the story.
The photorealistic approach to 2019’s Lion King was not appreciated by fans
When Barry Jenkins came in to direct Mufasa: The Lion King, there were hopes that the project might be great as the director has won an Oscar for 2016’s Moonlight. However, with the release of the first teaser trailer, fans continued to feel the same ‘soulless’ vibe of the 2019 adaptation, despite Jenkins saying otherwise.

Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

It may be your first time hearing something like this, but here it is. It turns out that The Lion King’s modern adaptation released back in 2019 never disturbed the creators by its critical failure — quite the contrary, it seems to have become an even bigger incentive to come up with a prequel that this time will revolve around Simba’s father Mufasa.
Set to be released this December, the upcoming movie called Mufasa: The Lion King has just dropped its first trailer making so many things even more controversial now.
The Lion King, the first installment of the technologically advanced franchise based on the 1994 iconic animated film of the same name, was directed by the MCU’s vet Jon Favreau and soon after the start of its production was proclaimed one of the most anticipated movies back in 2019. Well, get ready to witness the magic of ‘Lion King’ in a whole new way as Mufasa: The Lion King’s first teaser trailer was recently dropped (April 29). And we got to learn that Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in charge of the soundtrack for the live-action animated prequel to The Lion King.
The songwriter-actor, 44, composed the music for a number of films and TV shows, including Moana and Encanto, to refer a few. Not to mention making physical appearances in Mary Poppins Returns, 200 Cartas, and other flicks.

With the arrival of the first trailer for the "live-action" "Lion King" prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" came news that the film's music is being spearheaded by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the aftermath of the smash success of his stage musical "Hamilton" (which was eventually released as a movie on Disney+), Miranda seemed to be the guy in Hollywood, working on music for things like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Moana," "Vivo," and "Encanto," just to name a few, while also physically appearing on screen in "Mary Poppins Returns," "In the Heights," "His Dark Materials," and more. The dude was everywhere, and, as often happens when someone becomes overexposed, a backlash began. His past couple of years have been more subdued, and "Mufasa: The Lion King" marks his return to the familiar arms of The Walt Disney Company.

Mufasa: The Lion King Teaser Trailer: Blue Ivy Carter Makes Her Debut! (Photo Credit – Youtube)
Mufasa: The Lion King Teaser trailer has been dropped by Disney, and the live-action film, which is a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, will be released worldwide on December 20. However, the trailer would put you to disbelieving the amount that must have been spent on this so-called CGI film that has been unnecessarily called a live-action film.
The one-minute, 34-second trailer makes one thing very clear: the animals are more expressive this time, and some research and hard work has been done at that end. But the question lies – Is Mufasa’s back story important, and was this prequel necessary?
Instead of investing their mind, money, and time in creating a fresh character, Disney has tried to play a safe bet by making Mufasa: The Lion King. Well-known names definitely pique the excitement as...

You have to admit, even the promise of it is fascinating: what does a photoreal-animated Lion King film look like when it comes from Barry Jenkins – the director of Moonlight, and If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Underground Railroad? We’re about to find out, because Jenkins is directing Mufasa: The Lion King, the follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 The Lion King remake – ostensibly a prequel about the rise of Simba’s legendary dad, but also weaving in sequel threads following Simba and Nala’s burgeoning family. And it’s not that Jenkins is being parachuted in – he’s working with his regular cinematographer James Laxton, and editor Joi McMillon, bringing his impeccable craft to an entirely different type of filmmaking, with the biggest tools blockbusterdom can bring. Check out the trailer here:

It’s time to head back to the Pride Lands in Barry Jenkins’ Lion King prequel. Watch the first Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
The Lion King, released in 2019, proved to be a controversial one. While early reactions praised the film’s visual effects, others found fault in its all-cgi creatures. Really, it was a strange move from Disney to call it a live-action version of such a beloved classic when it was all created on a computer screen.
Regardless, the film has spawned a prequel, and Moonlight director Barry Jenkins signed on to direct what we now know is called Mufasa.
Take a look at the Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
It certainly looks like it’s going to be more of the same, so if you weren’t a fan of 2019’s The Lion King, something tells us this might be a miss for you too.
