At one time, superhero shows like DC's Stargirl were essentially guaranteed to be renewed year after year. That's all changed now that Nexstar Media Group is purchasing a controlling interest in the network. Nexstar reportedly plans to focus on traditional network shows that have a more broad appeal, and that doesn't sound like DC's Stargirl. Will the show be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

The CW is losing another show. “Stargirl,” the channel’s teen superhero drama, will conclude with its ongoing third season, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show, which airs on Wednesdays, premiered its third season in August. The final episode will now premiere on December 7.
The news comes shortly after The CW was acquired by station group Nexstar, in a deal that has been accompanied by several cancellations and endings for many of the network’s series. In May, ahead of the official deal, the channel canceled over half of its scripted programming lineup. Nexstar officially took control in October, with plans to retool the famously unprofitable channel to focus on acquired programming and cheaper original series. The change was accompanied by CEO Mark Pedowitz stepping down from his post after more than a decade at the channel.
Last week, the channel’s “Nancy Drew” announced it would conclude with its next season,...

“Stargirl” will come to an end at The CW with Season 3, Variety has confirmed.
The DC series is currently airing its third season, with the finale set to air on Dec. 7. This is the latest CW scripted series to announce it will come to an end following Nexstar’s completion of its acquisition of The CW in October. It was most recently announced that “Nancy Drew” would end with its fourth season, with both “The Flash” and “Riverdale” also coming to an end. The CW also canceled many of its scripted originals back in May.
“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” said series creator and executive producer Geoff Johns. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet,...

The series, created by Geoff Johns, stars Brec Bassinger as high school student Courtney Whitmore, the character that started Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, inspired by his sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash.

That's how it's done.
After a decent start, the past two episodes have truly upped the ante, as Stargirl Season 2 Episode 4 was another standout installment.
It was a tad exposition-heavy in the middle, but other than that, this episode, like the one before it, proved that Stargirl Season 2 is on a whole different level.
Part of what's beautifully working this season is the show's characters, particularly its villains, continue to operate in shades of gray.
The second season is less black and white than the first, and that point couldn't have been more apparent, thanks to the return of Sportsmaster and Tigress, played by Neil Hopkins and Joy Osmanski, respectively.
I'd almost forgotten how funny the marrieds are, and the actors, who have been promoted to series regulars for the show's upcoming third season, slipped seamlessly back into their old roles.

Episode six of Stargirl gives the feeling that the origin story of Stargirl and her new teammates is over and the true story of the new Justice Society is finally taking off. The series has done well with at least making the origin stories fun because, let’s be real, most origin stories are pretty bland, but it’s nice to get to the point where more interesting stories can develop.
This episode introduces us to Lawrence Crock (Neil Hopkins) and Blue Valley High’s physical education teacher, Paula Brooks (Joy Osmanski), a super-powered couple that lives and dies by their daughter’s, Artemis (Stella Smith), ability in football. When Artemis is benched for punching a fellow teammate after a late football hit, her parents meet up with the football coach and murder him.

This Stargirl review contains No spoilers!
The CW has long had a light stranglehold on TV superheroes. Since the debut of Arrow eight years ago, the channel has excelled at bringing DC Comics heroes to the screen in a thoroughly enjoyable, generally family friendly fashion. DC Universe launched in 2018, bringing more niche stars to the roster including the very R-rated Titans and the strange, crude, and lovable Doom Patrol. Stargirl is the first of DC Universe’s shows to make the transition to The CW, with the show essentially simulcast, hitting the DC streamer one day earlier than it hits the network. Though its genesis began with the darker world of DC Universe, Stargirl is a dream fit for The CW and for this lifelong DC Comics fan is easily the best of their offerings yet.

The next DC Universe original live action series is Stargirl! Not as edgy as Titans, nor as weird as our beloved Doom Patrol, Stargirl looks like a celebration of superheroics, and one that will explore the legacy of the first team of heroes in comic book history, the Justice Society of America. Stargirl will roll out in May on both the DC Universe streaming service and on The CW.
The series stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, who will take on the mantle of Stargirl. Luke Wilson plays her stepfather, former kid sidekick and current pilot of the gigantic S.T.R.I.P.E robot, Pat Dugan. They’re joined by Amy Smart (Varsity Blues) as Courtney’s mother, Barbara Whitmore. But really, if you’re talking about Stargirl, you’re also talking about the Justice Society of America, and this series will absolutely feature more characters carrying on...

The latest superhero adaptation is the upcoming Stargirl, based on the DC Comics character and coproduced by DC Universe and The CW. Stargirl might not be as familiar a name as some of the other heroes adapted for the small screen, so here's what you need to know about the new series before it launches in early 2020.
Like many superhero series, the premise of Stargirl kicks off with a young person discovering a world of superpowers that she never knew existed. In this case, that young hero-to-be is Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger), a high-school sophomore who discovers that her new stepfather has a secret past as the sidekick to the superhero Starman. Courtney discovers a powerful "cosmic staff" that used to belong to Starman, and, in time, she inspires a mismatched group of young heroes to become the Justice Society of America and go up against the Injustice Society,...

A third original live-action series is joining Titans and Doom Patrol on DC Universe this spring in the form of Stargirl. Whereas those two productions are notable for being darker and more mature than most other DC TV shows, this one will have a completely different tone. And you can get a feel for that in this first teaser trailer, which just debuted this evening.
The short promo opens with Courtney Whitmore herself, Brec Bassinger, standing in front of some high school lockers with co-stars Christopher James Baker, Angelika Washington and Yvette Monreal, with the foursome labelled “a new generation of superheroes.” These three actors’ characters have yet to be announced, but it seems they’ll become Stargirl’s pals in fighting crime. “The staff chose me,” we hear Bassinger say. “And I chose you.

Although DC Universe’s reputation has been damaged by its handling of Swamp Thing, most people are in agreement that the shows themselves are pretty great. One of the more anticipated upcoming series on the platform is Stargirl, which is being written and produced by Geoff Johns. And according to an insider on the Stargirl Facebook group, the new show will include Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern.
The rumored casting ties into Stargirl’s relationship to the Justice Society of America, the forerunners to the Justice League. In the show, Brec Bassinger plays Courtney Whitmore, a high school sophomore who joins with other young heroes to fight villains from the past. Whitmore takes on the mantle of Stargirl after discovering a cosmic staff and her stepfather’s role as sidekick to superhero Starman.

The original action drama series, Matador, which launched on El Rey Network in July, will not return for a second season. The show was created by Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and ended its 13 episode run in October. Despite initial high hopes for the drama – the pilot of which was directed by network founder Robert Rodriguez – low international sales apparently played a significant part in the network’s decision not to renew. In a statement regarding the cancellation, El Rey Network explained its choice.
“Ultimately, it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level – creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. We want to thank everyone involved, from the extraordinarily talented cast and crew to the amazing production team. We appreciate all that they have...

Remember when El Rey renewed their Matador TV show for a second season? Well, the cable channel wants to forget that July 2014 announcement. They've now cancelled Matador and that includes their plans for season two.
An action series, Matador revolves a popular and swinging bachelor soccer star (Gabriel Luna) who is recruited by a clandestine spy organization in the United States Government. He's to infiltrate the life of billionaire team owner Andrés Galan (Alfred Molina) who is suspected of using his network of communications satellites for wildly illegal purposes. The rest of the cast includes Nicky Whelan, Neil Hopkins, Jude Ciccolella, Tanc Sade, Peter Gadiot, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.
The first season's 13 episodes concluded last month. According to Deadline, the series wasn't cheap to produce. And, though the first season performed well enough domestically, there wasn't enough interest internationally to proceed with a...

"Matador" is no more. Robert Rodriguez's cable channel El Rey Network has made its first major cancellation, after declining to pick up the spy series "Matador" for a second season. After premiering in in July, the 13-episode first season aired its final episode in October, according to Deadline. "Matador" starred Gabriel Luna as a DEA agent who goes undercover as a pro soccer player. The series was created by the former writing team of Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman (the "Transformers" films, "Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Star Trek Into Darkness"). Rodriguez directed the premiere episode. "Matador" also starred Nicky Whelan, Neil Hopkins, Alfred Molina and Tanc Sade. "Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes," reads a press release from El Rey.

The El Rey Network, Robert Rodriguez's brainchild, will be premiering its second original series tonight. The Latin-American network will now have, in addition to Rodriguez's series adaptation of From Dusk Till Dawn, Matador- a sleek spy-sports series. The show will follow special narcotics agent Tony Bravo, as he goes undercover as a soccer player in order to gain access to international crime rings.
"Tony 'Matador' Bravo (Gabriel Luna) is a professional soccer player for the La Riot who comes to be known as much for his antics off the field as his moves on it. But what his fans and family don't realize is that it's all a cover—in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for the CIA. Agent Bravo, nicknamed “Matador” after he takes out a top player known as 'The Bull' during tryouts for the team, finds himself suddenly thrust into a clandestine world.

In what will likely be the least surprising piece of news today, El Rey Network has announced that "From Dusk Till Dawn" has been renewed for a second season. What? You thought that the flagship series for El Rey Network, a series created by the network's founder, wasn't going to be picked up? Duh. Per El Rey Network, the second "From Dusk Till Dawn" season will be 13 hour-long episodes and will, again, be shot in Austin, Texas. “This is a truly unique property and one that has really resonated for viewers," blurbs Robert Rodriguez, who directed four episodes for the first season, which was based on his own vampire cult favorite. "It has been a joy to bring these characters back to life and have the opportunity to take our storytelling to a whole new place. Genre filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network announced today that Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider Man 2) has been cast as Andres Galan in the network's upcoming scripted original set to premiere July 2014. Previously announced cast members include Gabriel Luna, Nicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.
Created by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced in association with K/O Paper Products, the coveted writing/producing team behind Sleepy Hollow, Fringe , Star Trek and the Transformer franchise, Matador will feature Molina as Andrew Galan, a man who built his fortune in the telecom industry, but his true passion is soccer. As owner of the ascendant La Riot franchise, he is celebrated in both the sports and business worlds. But there is another world that he operates in -- as a member of an elite group of powerful global players, ruthless individuals who can effect world events on a scale that one would never imagine. What Galan doesn't know is that there is a mole in his midst. One of his new players, Tony Bravo, is actually an undercover operative, sent in to expose him and his cohorts. As Tony and Galan grow closer, the fate of their relationship may very well determine the fate of the world.
Irreverent and action-packed, Matador chronicles the unlikely rise of Antonio "Matador" Bravo, a popular soccer star, who comes to be known as much for his playboy antics off the field as his dynamic moves on it. But what his fans and family don't realize is that it's all a cover--in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for a little known branch of the CIA. “Matador” has the kind of fame and notoriety that affords him access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy. But, in balancing the dueling roles in which he's been cast, he will be forced to confront the question of his true identity...and it is this mission which will prove to be his most dangerous.
Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network's chairman and founder, is set to direct the first episode which will be penned by showrunners, co-creators and executive producers Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin

Mariana Klaveno (Devious Maids, True Blood) has been cast in CBS’ untitled Kevin Williamson drama pilot. Written by Williamson and directed by Liz Friedlander, the psychological thriller revolves around two detectives, Beth and Jack (McDermott), who handle stalking incidents for the Threat Assessment Unit of the Lapd. Klaveno, repped by Apa, Shelter Entertainment, and Lev Ginsburg, plays Janice, one of the Threat Assessment Unit’s detectives who is often underestimated because of her somewhat flashy appearance. Lost alum Neil Hopkins has been cast in Matador, the upcoming action drama series for Robert Rodriguez‘s El Rey Network, created by Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It chronicles the unlikely rise of Antonio “Matador” Bravo (Gabriel Luna), a popular soccer star who in reality is a covert operative for a little known branch of the CIA. We've got a really fun comedy short for you to watch today that comes from writer-director Sherwin Shilati, and stars Neil Hopkins (Lost) and John Forest (Young Adult). It's called Neil & John: The Key, and the story tests "the bounds of their friendship in pursuit of mankind's greatest kept secret." I don't want to give away the punchline of the film, but it's not safe for work.
According to Deadline, Shilati pitched the "risque concept to the pair, amassed a crew, and shot it over the course of a weekend. The trio split a budget that 'cost as much as a used Xbox and 5 games' by calling in favors and snagging VFX shots virtually for free."

But ‘Operation: Save Channing Tatum’s Wife’ comes with a few strings attached. Someone’s about to die!
Witches of East End‘s Oct. 13 episode tied up most of the loose ends left by last week’s premiere — Freya (Jenna Dewan Tatum) was freed from the painting, Ingrid (Rachel Boston) brought Wendy (Mädchen Amick) back to life, and Joanna (Julia Ormond) was released on bail — but the Beauchamps still had a little digging to do before they could kiss their worries goodbye. More specifically, they had a little grave digging to do.
Because that’s how most families get out of jams, right? They take group field trips to graveyards and dig up their relatives’ coffins, which conveniently double as the hiding place for more than $1 million? Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
Oh, Brothers
Furious at her just-released mother for keeping her powers a secret, Freya stormed out of the house,...

Title: Detour Director: William Dickerson Starring: Neil Hopkins, Brea Grant I guess to call “Detour,” director William Dickerson’s micro-budgeted drama of confinement and descent into madness, by a more accurate moniker, “Mudslide,” would be to court an unfortunate array of jokes centered around bodily excretions. But, seemingly taking “Buried” and Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours” as its inspiration, the movie spends most of its time trapped in a SUV covered with the detritus of a muddy landslide. While not lacking for decent acting or technical execution, the movie’s lead and de facto host is, as written, something of a cipher, leaving one wishing for MacGyver, or even MacGruber, to tackle a similar dilemma. The critical success of 2010′s Buried didn’t exactly cause a wave of claustrophobic copycats, but a few similarly structured films found their way into production in the past few years. Wrecked saw Adrien Brody trapped in his car after an accident, and Stephen Dorff was stuffed in a trunk (hurray!) for Brake. All three films, for better or worse, had storylines “outside” the single location (car, coffin) that offered additional narrative momentum beyond a simple survival story. Director/co-writer William Dickerson‘s feature debut, Detour, forgoes that additional layer to focus almost exclusively on one man trapped in a confined space and desperate to escape. Is that enough to keep viewers’ attention for ninety minutes? Yes. And no. And yes. Jackson (Neil Hopkins) awakens at the wheel of his car with the engine stalled and the airbag deployed. It’s pitch black outside his windows, but what he mistakes at first for nightfall is in fact...

Dickerson’s Trapped-without-escape Ordeal Swims More Than Sinks
Utilizing a minimum amount of characters and locations within a trapped in a car, freak mudslide buried alive template, William Dickerson’s debut feature draws inevitable comparisons to the stuck between a rock and a hard place denouements recently pitched in Rodrigo Cortés’ Buried and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. Detourhas, literally, more space to play with than its predecessors by presenting auds with a more familiar setting of the automobile, but while the ubiquity of a car enhances the idea of “this could happen to anyone”; such “familiarity” pretends to make this an even more terrifying experience than it really is.
Jackson Aider (Neil Hopkins) is a typical out-of-state transplant that has come to California to find luck in the entertainment industry. Now working in advertisement, Jackson lives with his pregnant wife in Los Angeles. An ordinary existence until one rainy day,...
