He died at the Monroe Correctional Complex in Monroe, Washington, where he was serving a 16-year term for robbery.
Wrote the autobiographical novel "Drugstore Cowboy" while in prison.
At the time of his death, he was into the 15th month of a 15 year, 9 month prison sentence for robbing a pharmacy in Seattle.
