The Neighborhood universe is expanding with a second series, Crutch. Paramount+ has picked up the half-hour, multi-camera comedy headlined by Tracy Morgan. It is set in the world of the popular CBS sitcom starring Cedric the Entertainer, which has been renewed for a seventh season.
Crutch hails from Owen Smith, who penned the pilot script, and The Neighborhood‘s production companies, Cedric’s A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Wendi Trilling TrillTV and CBS Studios.
It centers on its titular character Francois “Frank” Crutchfield (Morgan) – or “Crutch” to those who know him well – a Harlem widower whose empty-nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home.
Morgan and Cedric starred together on Morgan’s TBS comedy series The Last O.G., with Cedric as a series regular on Season 1 before segueing to recurring when The Neighborhood was picked up to series.

“Ghosts” has been renewed for Season 2 at CBS, with the broadcaster also announcing a Season 5 renewal for “The Neighborhood” and a Season 4 renewal for “Bob Hearts Abishola.” CBS had previously announced a three-year renewal for “Big Bang Theory” prequel “Young Sheldon.”

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

Family Reunion is coming to an end.
Netflix on Monday handed out a renewal for a third and final season of the multicamera comedy.
This also marks the lowest episode order for the series, down from 20 and 15 episodes in seasons one and two, respectively.
Series creator Meg DeLoatch had handed over the showrunning duties to Adrienne Carter (Everybody Hates Chris) and Arthur Harris (Living Single).

Netflix renewed family sitcom “Family Reunion” for a 10-episode third and final season.
The series follows the McKellan family who moved from Seattle to Georgia in the series premiere to be closer to extended family. Now there are three generations living in the same house, and house is stuffed full of people. During the first two seasons, which were split into two parts each, the characters had to adjust to their new lifestyle, which included three-hour church services and “huge humidity hair,” as the network puts it. As complicated as things could be, there has been a lot of family bonding and learning and growing along the way, as well, and the final season should continue that pattern.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Welcome to the Porch Pirate,” the fourth episode of “The Neighborhood” Season 4.
Meg DeLoatch, the new showrunner of “The Neighborhood,” knows there are many fans of the CBS sitcom who don’t follow the behind-the-scenes machinations or read news headlines about the show. So when she stepped in to take over the fourth season, she didn’t want to do anything that would disrupt the story that had been playing out on screen for three seasons already. But she did want to go deeper with it.
One of the biggest examples of this has already played out the fourth episode of the season: In “Welcome to the Porch Pirate,” Gemma (Beth Behrs) experiences a miscarriage and struggles to allow herself to grieve. The show does not depict the act of losing the baby, but comes in after in order to “lead with emotion,...

When last we tuned in, Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) had been led to Upstate New York by Paul Lemere, not to find the grave of the serial contract killer’s first victim, as promised, but instead so that Lemere could visit his late wife’s grave once more before stepping onto a land mine to die by suicide.

Sitcom veteran Meg DeLoatch knew she’d have her work cut out for her when she signed on as showrunner of CBS’ The Neighborhood, replacing series creator Jim Reynolds.
As it heads into Season 4, the Cedric the Entertainer-led comedy currently stands as TV’s No. 2-rated sitcom (trailing only CBS’ own Young Sheldon), so she didn’t want to change too much. If Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) thought Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) was too close for comfort before, wait until this bombshell drops! On Season 4 of the sitcom The Neighborhood, Dave takes a genealogy test, revealing the neighbors are distant cousins. “Calvin is less than thrilled,” says showrunner Meg DeLoatch, who previews what else is new on their California block. • Morning sickness? Dave’s pregnant wife, Gemma (Beth Behrs), is ill 24/7, says DeLoatch. Cue the toilet humor! • Calvin adds “pimp-my-ride pro” to his résumé as his auto shop gets into high-end design, while wife Tina’s (Tichina Arnold) side-hustle baking business finds success. Also, conflict mediator Dave takes on a celebrity divorce that “puts him on Hollywood’s radar,” DeLoatch adds. (Credit: Monty Brinton/CBS) • We finally meet troubled local (and butt of many a joke) “Crackhead Victor,” via an intervention, says DeLoatch: “Everyone tries to get Victor back on track.

An October 2020 UCLA Hollywood Diversity study — which focused on broadcast, cable and streaming programming for the previous two television seasons — reported that, when it comes to racial diversity in television industry jobs, while Black, indigenous, and other people of color (Bipoc) creatives continue to make incremental gains, positions at the highest ranks and behind the camera still elude them. The group is not represented proportionately to their share of the U.S. population overall, even though audiences continue to show interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity.
The analysis found that the greatest racial disparities are in behind-the-camera jobs such as a show’s creator, director, and writer: Among digital programs, just 10.3 percent of show creators were Bipoc; in broadcast, 10.7 percent; and for cable, 14.7 percent.
White men still dominate these positions, as well as high-level TV executive jobs. As of 2020, chair/CEO positions were overwhelmingly held...

Starz released a trailer for its new wrestling drama “Heels,” which will premiere on Aug. 15 at 9 p.m.
Set in a close-knit community in Georgia, “Heels” follows the people of a small town who chase their dreams in the world of independent professional wrestling. It centers on a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, one must play the good guy and the other their nemesis, otherwise known as “the heel.” In the real world, these characters prove difficult to live up to — or hard to leave behind.
Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig portray the set of siblings, older brother Jack Spade and younger brother Ace Spade, respectively. The cast also includes Alison Liff, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, James Harrison and Chris Bauer.

“Kim’s Convenience” star Simu Liu asks himself “every day” whether he should’ve spoken out last month on social media about his experience on the set of the hit CBC series, when he noted in a Facebook post the “overwhelmingly white” producers and lack of Korean voices in the writers’ room after creator Ins Choi departed. Meg DeLoatch has come onboard the CBS comedy “The Neighborhood” as showrunner and executive producer of Season 4, Variety has learned.
DeLoatch takes over running the multi-cam comedy from series creator Jim Reynolds, whose exit from the series was originally reported earlier this year.
DeLoatch most recently created, executive produced, and served as showrunner on the Netflix multi-cam “Family Reunion.” The second season of that series debuted on the streamer in April, with the first season having dropped in its entirety back in 2019. No decision has yet been made on a third season, per an individual with knowledge of the situation, but should the series get renewed, DeLoatch would remain onboard as an executive producer. Her other TV credits include “Fuller House,” “Raven’s Home,” “Austin & Ally,” and “Single Ladies.” She also created and executive produced the Upn series “Eve.”
She is repped by Gersh and Morris Yorn.

Family Reunion creator/executive producer Meg DeLoatch has joined CBS’ The Neighborhood as executive producer and showrunner for the upcoming fourth season. She replaces series creator/executive producer/showrunner Jim Reynolds, who exited the popular CBS/CBS Studios multi-camera comedy series, headlined by Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, at the end of Season 3.
DeLoatch is already putting her stamp on the show with a new writing team; I hear she has released all but one of The Neighborhood‘s Season 3 writers.
Comedy veteran DeLoatch most recently created and executive produces the Netflix multi-camera sitcom Family Reunion, for which she has received two NAACP Image Awards in 2020 and 2021 and a 2020 WGA Award nomination. DeLoatch assembled one of the first all-Black writers’ rooms to authentically voice the multi-generational family in the Netflix comedy series, whose cast includes Tia Mowry-Hardrict, Anthony Alabi and Emmy winner Loretta Devine. Richard Roundtree guest stars as Grandpa.

Leaders of the Writers Guild of America have told members that they may need to extend to current contract beyond its current May 1 expiration due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Members received the message on Tuesday afternoon, a day after Variety reported that the WGA was evaluating its options for conducting contract talks with Hollywood’s major studios that were to have started on March 23. The Writers Guild of America on Friday tapped more than 30 members to serve on the guild’s negotiating committee for the upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The current three-year collective bargaining agreement, which covers most of the work done by WGA writers, is set to expire on May 1, 2020.
The looming contract negotiations have been a source of much anxiety in Hollywood as fears of a potential strike have bubbled in recent months. The negotiations are especially interesting for the WGA, which is still in a stand off with Hollywood talent agencies over how they are represented and the packaging fees agents collect for bundling talent together for networks and studios.

The current pact expires on May 1. No date has been set for the talks to begin, and it’s not clear whether the WGA will begin bargaining before the Directors Guild, whose contract doesn’t expire until two months later.
