“It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. You never want anything to feel or look like a prop or dressing. It’s got to feel like someone to put it there for a reason.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!
The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s,...

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. For those who haven't yet caught up on the first season, which I reviewed for /Film here, consider this your cue to...

When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.
Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.
It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

Game of Thrones was the reigning TV show during the 2010s as people continued to turn up to experience the mythos of Westeros for every season. While the final season divided fans, the show as a whole is still considered one of the best epics to have graced the TV screen. Many actors from the show had their breakthrough from the series.
Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones
Liam Cunningham was one of the highlight performers from the series as Davos Seaworth. Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss had a great working relationship with the Irish actor. After the series’ end, Cunningham was committed to doing another series, but the showrunners told him to ditch that show so that he could come aboard for their next epic series 3 Body Problem.

After a relatively sparse decade of werewolf cinema, the early 2000s unleashed a new wave of fur, fangs and bone-breaking transformations. Ginger Snaps was ahead of the curve, especially considering how it approached the same old ideas but in a fresh way. Nevertheless, Dog Soldiers was also bracing and innovative; Neil Marshall delivered a high-concept actioner bristling with colorful characters, entertaining melee, and, of course, ferocious lycans so dissimilar from prior celluloid renderings. While not exactly the first of its kind — Full Eclipse crossed genres back in the ’90s — Dog Soldiers did lead this sudden charge of hyper-violent and stylized werewolf films.
In spite of the saturation of American werewolves, these creatures can go wherever storytellers please. Marshall, perhaps inspired by England’s enduring Beast of Bodmin legend, created vague fakelore for his film’s scenic setting; the tranquil Scottish Highlands were really the hunting grounds for an old family of uncanny predators.

“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. Kit Harington announced in a new interview with ScreenRant while promoting his movie “Blood for Dust” that his “Game of Thrones” spinoff centered around Jon Show is “off the table” and no longer in development at HBO. The network declined to comment. News broke in June 2022 that Harington was set to return to his iconic “Thrones” role, which earned him two Emmy nominations (one for supporting actor and another for lead actor in a drama series).
“It was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us,” author George R.R. Martin later confirmed in a blog post. “I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”
Now talking to ScreenRant, Harington admitted the team “couldn’t find the right story to tell” so the project is not in active development anymore.

This article contains spoilers for 3 Body Problem episode 2 “Red Coast.”
The early episodes of Netflix sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem are fraught with mystery. Why is science suddenly “broken?” What does the countdown mean? How does the Chinese Cultural Revolution factor in to all of this? All of those enigmas are best represented by one spooky lady in particular: Tatiana Haas (Marlo Kelly).
At this point, viewers have already met the smiling woman who prepped Auggie (Eiza González) for the universe to “wink” at her in episode 1. But Tatiana’s identity, allegiance, and motivations remain a mystery. That mystery is largely solved in episode 2 “Red Coast” thanks to a disquieting scene involving Clarence “Da” Shi (Benedict Wong), a cemetery, and a gravestone that reads “Edith Marsh.” It all amounts to one of 3 Body Problem‘s best Easter eggs and a helpfully quick characterization of one of its most important villains.

Alien invasion stories have been a standard part of film and television for quite some time. Be it Independence Day, Pacific Rim, or even Avengers, blockbusters and science fiction television have always had a place to comfortably market stories about heroic teams coming together to beat a sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial threat.

As quickly as it started, Netflix’s eight-episode “3 Body Problem” ends, in a blur of VR headsets and scientist murders and that one time they sliced up a ship like bologna.
Though it hasn’t been greenlit yet, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have plans for Season 2, and Cixin Liu’s book series is a trilogy. Even if this is the end for now, the story remains open-ended. So what should viewers make of the finale?
What matters most is the foundation laid in previous episodes. An alien civilization called the San-Ti is headed toward Earth, expected to arrive in over 400 years. Though their original goal was to conquer Earth and escape their own tri-solar system, they realized that human technology would advance and likely surpass the San-Ti’s by the time they arrive. “This is a funeral procession,” their VR avatar says in a previous episode.

Plot: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
Review: As soon as it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were developing 3 Body Problem alongside Alexander Woo, I grabbed the novel and read it. The dense first entry in Liu Cixin’s trilogy was a fascinating look at science fiction from a Chinese vantage point with heavy political implications from the nation’s storied history. In translating the book for the screen, 3 Body Problem incorporates many of the cultural elements from the novel into a global and diverse narrative that sets the table for an ongoing series about humanity fighting against an extraterrestrial foe.

Gone are the days of seeing Liam Cunningham as the trusted deputy of Stannis Baratheon! The knight has now embraced modernity, as he’s playing the suit-booted Thomas Wade, leader of the Planetary Defense Committee, in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. The show is rightfully touted as the next big thing, considering it’s coming from Benioff and Weiss, the same duo who once created a little something called Game of Thrones. And like the HBO show, this one is also based on a series of super popular books—only the genre is science fiction this time.
Cunningham’s character, Thomas Wade, is the face of an organization fighting an alien race, San-Ti-Ti, whose primary agenda is taking over the world and ending humankind. Inarguably the sassiest character in the show, Wade is dynamic, very pragmatic, and also very courageous. He wouldn’t hesitate to murder a lot of innocent...

This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."
Now, after five years of work on varyingly successful stray projects, Benioff and Weiss are back with co-creator credits on another ambitious genre story based on multiple beloved books. This time around, they're putting their spin on Liu Cixin's "3 Body Problem" alongside co-creator Alexander Woo. While the two shows actually couldn't be more different, it's impossible not to...

This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
Netflix's new series "3 Body Problem" has a lot going for it. There's the intriguing, multi-layered sci-fi premise that's pulled straight from Liu Cixin's popular novel of the same name. There's an intriguing ensemble cast that includes "Game of Thrones" MVPs like John Bradley and Liam Cunningham along with the likes of Benedict Wong and breakout star Jess Hong. Perhaps most importantly for viewers committing their hard-won time to the series, there are several entertaining and disturbing mysteries at the heart of "3 Body Problem," from scientists dying by suicide after mental countdown clocks show up in their brains to a mysterious invisible woman who's just as likely to kill our heroes as she is to offer them a smoke.
By the end of the show's eight-episode first season, "3 Body Problem" does offer some solid answers to our questions.

This article contains major spoilers for the entirety of "3 Body Problem" and Liu Cixin's novels.
The idea of making major changes to the source material isn't exactly a foreign concept to "3 Body Problem" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pair famously became household names during their tenure on HBO's "Game of Thrones." While they remain infamous among mainstream audiences for the very public criticisms leveled against the final season of the hit fantasy series, the more invested fans have followed their every move from the beginning. Changes both minor and major inspired breathless internet hot takes but, for the most part, the two proved adept at taking occasionally impenetrable concepts from the books and translating them into live action.
The same holds true for Netflix's "3 Body Problem" (which I reviewed for /Film here), a surprisingly faithful attempt to bring original author Liu Cixin's acclaimed...

This 3 Body Problem review contains no spoilers.
Beginning with HBO‘s epic Game of Thrones and continuing with Netflix sci-fi effort 3 Body Problem, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have come to understand an important shortcut in adapting literature for television: keep as much of the good stuff as you can.
Though latter seasons of Thrones deviated significantly from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (mostly due to the fact that Martin couldn’t get the final two books in on time…or maybe ever), the early seasons stuck close to the novels’ rich world. Game of Thrones season 1 is a damn-near carbon copy of the book A Game of Thrones, give or take a Littlefinger monologue here or a “Tyrion slept through the battle” there.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss warned Sunday night that fans shouldn’t expect the John Bradley we know and love as Samwell Tarly in their new Netflix series “3 Body Problem” — and that was their goal all along.
Recounting a night out in a Belfast pub while filming “Game of Thrones” some years ago, Benioff told the sold-out crowd at the Los Angeles debut of “3 Body Problem” that they got the idea to cast Bradley as a snarkier, harsher role after seeing him flirt with a tourist.
Benioff said Bradley was “incredibly sarcastic” and dry in his banter, and he and Weiss were inspired.
“He’s nothing like the Samwell that people know from ‘Game of Thrones,’ and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun someday to work with John and see him play a character kind of closer to the actual John?'”

This week is Huge. How huge, you might be asking? Well, we’ve got an ambitious sci-fi epic from the “Game of Thrones” team hitting Netflix (“3 Body Problem”); a “Road House” remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal on Prime Video; and the return of the ‘90s era “X-Men” animated series coming to Disney+. And that’s just scratching the surface – also in the offerings are a documentary on Stormy Daniels (“Stormy”), a dramatization of the Yorkshire Ripper case (“The Long Shadow”) and Regina King playing Shirley Chisholm (“Shirley”). Like we said: Huge.

David Benioff and Db Weiss, having conquered the fantasy genre with Game of Thrones, could have recruited pretty much any talent they desired for their latest project – a big-budget adaptation of Liu Cixi’s sci-fi novel, Three-Body Problem, which comes to Netflix this week.
However, one person remained immune to their powers of persuasion, with the creative pair revealing that former president Barack Obama turned down their bid for him to make a cameo appearance.
Benioff told USA today that they, along with fellow show-runner Alexander Woo (who previously created vampire drama True Blood), had made the request after learning Obama was a big fan of the original novel: “He did sign a very funny note, when we tried to get him for a cameo. It was to the effect of, ‘In case there ever is a real alien invasion, I think I should probably save myself for that crisis.

The year is 2296. The place is Filly, the post-apocalyptic “vault” where Lucy (Ella Purnell) must fight to survive in a world already on the edge of extinction. The place is filled with scavengers, ne’er-do-wells, and rules you can’t learn until you’ve broken them.

Not long ago, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were at the top of the television world. Game of Thrones was a juggernaut and continuously won many Emmys. They had been tapped to help the future of Star Wars. Even HBO was moving forward on questionable projects, simply because their name was attached. However, even though Game of Thrones left the air almost five years ago, the creative duo has been missing in action.
Finally, 3 Body Problem gives them an opportunity to return to the television throne. With the help of co-creator Alexander Woo, the three men take on the mammoth task of adapting the book series. Spoiler Alert: This post contains some details of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, set for an eight-episode launch on the streamer March 21.
“Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.
Premiering Friday night at SXSW in Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Netflix’s much-hyped series is based on the Hugo Award-winning writings of Cixin Liu. Set to launch with eight episodes worldwide almost everywhere but Liu’s native China on March 21, the fact is 3 Body Problem...

Adapted from Lui Cixin’s award-winning Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, and drawing primarily from the first novel in the series, 3 Body Problem is a mystery story that takes place on a cosmic scale. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo’s series begins with a slew of suspicious deaths in the scientific community. When the world’s particle accelerators simultaneously begin churning out nonsensical data, an unnamed agency becomes convinced that these two events are somehow connected and sends a charmingly disheveled intelligence officer, Da Shi (Benedict Wong), to investigate.
As he sleuths into the ongoing deaths, Da uncovers a conspiracy that can be traced all the way back to the bloodiest days of China’s Cultural Revolution and to an astrophysicist named Ye Wenjie (played by Zine Tseng in her youth and then Rosalind Chao as an adult). Through flashbacks we learn that, distraught by the violence that she’d witnessed,...

Adapting a book named after a physics problem into a TV show meant to entertain the masses is both an admirable challenge and an invitation for disaster. Cixin Liu’s “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy has sold millions of copies around the world. Clearly, readers are connecting with something inside the former engineer’s weighty tomes about Earth’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life — and it likely isn’t the orbital mechanics. The colossal scale, galaxy-spanning stakes, and relatable characters all serve as emotional anchors that can hook people, and they all serve as key, replicable facets for a TV adaptation, too. What’s a bit harder to picture are casual fans scooting to the front of their seats for detailed explanations of interstellar travel and multi-dimensional theory. But hey, that’s the gig. You can’t say David Benioff and D.B. Weiss went into “3 Body Problem” unaware.

Publicity materials for Netflix’s new sci-fi drama 3 Body Problem refer to Benedict Wong’s character, a slightly rough-around-the-edges investigator with cross-jurisdictional concerns, as “Da Shi.”
It’s a nod to Liu Cixin’s novel of roughly the same title, in which the delightfully uncouth Shi Quiang is referred to as Da Shi (“Big Shi”) as a term of endearment. But nobody who hasn’t read the book will know why Wong’s character is being described that way, since he’s now a British-born character less mythically named “Clarence.” The character in the series is perfectly entertaining, but he doesn’t stand out iconoclastically in even a similar way. He’s flatter, less surprising and generally a lot more conventional.

The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. There’s a lot going on in the final trailer, yet it still manages to pull off being as vague as possible. If you haven’t read Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem book trilogy, the trailer will hint at what’s in store without spoiling the experience.
Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo created the series and serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, encouraged Benioff and Weiss to read the trilogy back in 2019, and both were immediately hooked.
