Matthew Vaughn is responding to the heavy criticism his film Argylle received.
The film starring Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard was not well-received by film critics and the box office, and the director is weighing in on what happened.
“My guard came down on Argylle. We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the Snatch days where there was such excitement. And I started drinking the Kool-Aid,” he said in an interview with Empire magazine.
He continued, “It’s a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie. We didn’t make Citizen Kane, but f***ing hell, then the reviews came out and I’m like, ‘Wait, what have I done to offend these people?’ They were vitriolic. I’m not saying the movie’s perfect by any means,...

Launched back in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as the lead, the DC live-action connected universe aka the Dceu finally succumbed to its own box-office and critical failures following the release of Justice League. Taking control of the remnants and determined to start over with a clean slate came James Gunn and Peter Safran, the former almost ready to kick-start it all with Superman.

Henry Cavill’s biggest flop of the year surprised director Matthew Vaughn in ways he did not expect. The filmmaker, who also helmed the successful Kingsman franchise, thought the 2024 spy thriller film would be a nice feel-good show for everyone, but what happened was the complete opposite.

Argylle was peppered with harsh criticism from fans and reviewers. Over the past years, there has been an oversaturation of espionage-themed movies in the market, but the root cause of its failure was the early negative reviews that discouraged fans from giving it a chance.

Could it be time for a familiar face to soar once again through the DC universe? Michael Rosenbaum, whose turn as the infamous Lex Luthor earned him a legion of fans in Alfred Gough & Miles Millar’s iconic Smallville series, may just have the key to unlocking his return to James Gunn’s Dcu—under one clear, heartfelt condition.
With a candid moment tinged with possibilities, Rosenbaum recently shared that he would be thrilled to play the incredibly complex villain, given the right pitch and call from his friend James Gunn. The Smallville series followed Clark (played by Tom Welling) as he learned about his Kryptonian ancestry and eventually underwent the training that would prepare him to become Superman.

With a track record of turning stories into sensational films, Matthew Vaughn has already astonished us with his directorial finesse. Unfortunately, in addition to creating critically acclaimed flicks like Layer Cake, Stardust, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, he has also directed films that fell flat with critics. That being said, his recent release—Argylle—starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, and Henry Cavill—has failed to capture the hearts of theatergoers.
Despite not breaking even at the box office, the film performed well on streaming platforms. While the box office numbers are still rolling in, with Vaughn at the helm and the film gaining traction, Argylle appears to be ripe for expansion.

Unfortunately, no matter how much money is spent on a movie, critics may not see its appeal. Directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle had all chances to become a success, but bombed at theaters and lost against its $200M budget. However, that alone doesn’t mean that hopes for the movie to come back are over.
Thanks to the numbers the comedy managed to pull at the streaming services, Vaughn still believes that the movie has all chances to return with a sequel. 72% of viewers, according to Rotten Tomatoes audiences’ score, would be happy to watch it too.
Will There Be Argylle 2?
If you believe the reviews left for Argylle, this is either the best or the worst spy movie ever made. These sentiments are perfectly represented by the film's Rotten Tomatoes score. Matthew Vaughn recently opened up to Empire magazine about enduring some of the worst reviews of his career with “Argylle,” the $200 million star-studded spy comedy that flopped in theaters this year with $96 million worldwide. The film, backed by Apple and released theatrically by Universal, intended to start a franchise and starred Bryce Dallas Howard as a reclusive spy novelist thrust into a real world of espionage. Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena and more co-starred.
“Fuck yeah,” Vaughn responded when asked if the extremely negative “Argylle” reviews were disappointing to read. The movie has a 33% Rotten Tomatoes score from 292 reviews.

Matthew Vaughn has managed to establish himself as a brand name when action comedies are concerned. He managed to achieve success with the Kingsman series, but his filmography includes other interesting titles such as Stardust (2007), Kick-Ass (2010), and X-Men: First Class (2011). Vaughn is definitely a director who is interesting and who knows his trade, but his most recent feature, Argylle, was a complete flop, despite a potentially intriguing premise and a star-filled cast. The critics have panned the Kingsman spin-off, and it was a disaster at the box office, earning less than $100 million against a $200 million budget.
In a recent talk with Empire magazine, Vaughn discussed the reception of Argylle, and the director was not shy about expressing his disappointment with how it all turned out for the movie. He believes firmly that the movie was not that bad and that the reactions were simply too harsh.

When Argylle landed at the start of 2024, it was met – by and large – with a slew of negative reviews. Matthew Vaughn’s spy romp, in which Bryce Dallas Howard’s espionage author Elly Conway finds herself caught up in a real spy story, saw the Kingsman filmmaker engage with a different tone of action-adventure story than he’d previously explored. But while the film was welcomed by some viewers, it also received some starkly critical reactions – and grossed just $96.2 million at the box office, before making its way to Apple TV+. It was not exactly what Vaughn hoped for, having imagined Argylle as the starting point for all kinds of adventures to come, both in the ‘real-world’ setting inhabited by Conway and Sam Rockwell’s Aidan Wilde, and the fictional world of Conway’s novels led by Henry Cavill’s Agent Argylle.

MultiVersus, the recently launched free-to-play platform fighter, isn’t shying away from a little friendly fire by poking fun at DC’s characters and actors. In a hilarious nod to DC Comics’ 2022 box office struggles via the film Black Adam, the game playfully throws some shade at Dwayne Johnson’s highly-memed statement – “The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change”.

In a clip from the game, Joker can be seen interacting with Black Adam and taking a jab at him with the line “Weren’t you supposed to be rearranging the hierarchy or something?”. This is a reference to The Rock’s big push for the character to become a centerpiece of the old Dceu.

Superman is set to be the first major installment of James Gunn’s new and improved Dcu. However, it seems that the shadow of the Dceu is never going to stop haunting WB, as Snyder’s version of the DC Mythos still seems to be the benchmark for a whole section of the fandom that the new Dcu is going to be measured against.

While Henry Cavill awaits his destiny as Agent 007 in the James Bond films, the producers are reportedly looking at changing up a different aspect of the legendary spy franchise. According to a source, producer Barbara Broccoli is looking at artists such as Bruno Mars and The Weeknd to produce the theme song of the next Bond film.
The James Bond films have always featured an original song for their grand opening credits sequences. Three of these songs have won Oscars in the past, including Adele’s ‘Skyfall’, Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s on the Wall’, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s ‘No Time To Die’. The new Bond film might have a change in style due to the artists the production is eyeing.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" within the Dceu with 2022's Black Adam. The movie was meant to be a fan-pleasing blockbuster which launched a new version of this shared world that, in Johnson's eyes, revolved around his anti-hero.
He reportedly went behind the backs of executives to bring Henry Cavill back as Superman, refused to share the screen with Zachary Levi's Shazam, and hoped to launch everything from a Justice Society movie to Hawkman as part of a slate he and Seven Bucks Productions would oversee.
Black Adam proved to be a mess of a movie with murky visuals and hit-and-miss CGI. Crucially, box office numbers weren't good, reviews were even worse, and Johnson soured people on this already struggling franchise enough to impact 2023's Dceu titles negatively.

What do you think about when we say the word “Peaky Blinders”. A shot of Cillian Murphy smoking his cigarette and pouring whiskey into a glass on the table. Well, the vibe is very similar to that of James Bond, if Bond was in the year 1919.

Not the year 1919, but fans are seemingly going crazy about a rumor that Cillian Murphy is the next choice for James Bond in the upcoming film. Mads Mikkelsen...Cillian Murphy...Giancarlo Esposito...by now, we know you've seen the same old names suggested for the McU's Doctor Doom time and time again.
With The Fantastic Four fast approaching and rumours swirling that the Latverian dictator will appear in a post-credits scene, all signs point to us meeting the new Victor Von Doom as soon as next year. However, none of the popular decisions listed above seem like a perfect fit to us.
In this feature, we've rounded up several alternative suggestions who would each be suitably terrifying and formidable as the McU's Doom. Crucially, they're not the names you'd necessarily expect to see.
To find out who we think could square off with Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing as a villain capable of being the next Saga's big bad, click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Leandros, on the other hand, is infamous for his rigid adherence to the Codex Astartes, leading to frustrating outcomes for players in “Space Marine.” Yet, neither of these characters holds the dubious honor of being the most hated. So who is it?

The MCU has had its ups and downs in the last few years, but it’s still the most successful franchise ever. What started as a single movie in 2008 has grown over 16 years into the largest cinematic universe, including both live-action movies and TV shows.
Despite this success, it’s become common for famous directors to criticize the MCU and superhero movies. Big names like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Francis Ford Coppola have mocked them, saying superhero movies aren’t true cinema.
Five years ago, Martin Scorsese, one of the most acclaimed directors of all time, took a few shots at the genre by saying he didn’t consider superhero movies to be real cinema.

National Treasure 3 will make the franchise a trilogy and the success of the upcoming movie will determine if more installments can be added. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the National Treasure franchise was a commercial success although the response from critics was not celebratory. Still, the franchise deserves one more installment. Games Workshop’s miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000 has managed to become one of the most popular franchises in the world, particularly in the United Kingdom. It is well-known for its unique characters and science fantasy that is set in the distant future. The franchise features a character known as Jaghatai Khan, a highly skilled Primarch of the White Scars Space Marine Legion.

Since Amazon MGM Studios has now acquired the TV and film rights to the miniature wargame, fans have been wondering who will play this exceptional character in the upcoming series. Although actor Henry Cavill is closely associated with the franchise, it would be best for him to avoid playing this character as it would count as whitewashing.

The upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has built significant anticipation among fans of the Warhammer 40K series. While the singleplayer campaign promises a brutal and immersive experience within the dystopian universe, multiplayer fans also have a lot to look forward to.
The newly revealed Operations mode should satisfy the needs of co-op enthusiasts, but Space Marine 2 will also introduce a 6v6 PvP mode dubbed Eternal War, which could end up taking the spotlight away from another scathingly popular multiplayer game: Helldivers 2.

Henry Cavill’s Superman might have had a very short tenure, and with the Dceu closing out, it seems highly unlikely that we will see the character again. However, audiences, creators, and some critics alike enjoyed the fresh, more personal take that Zack Snyder had when it came to Superman, as opposed to the Big Blue Boy Scout image the character had boasted.

William Friedkin’s The Exorcist was one of the few horror movies that managed to keep its viewers up late at night, tucked in the safety of their blankets. If they needed a glass of water and that clock was past midnight, they would just have to wait till the sun was up to quench their thirst. A true horror film in all its glory! And now, director Mike Flanagan will be taking on the responsibility of taking the franchise a step forward.
William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) | Warner Bros.
The Exorcist has had quite a few sequels to date, 5 to be exact. Unfortunately, none of them had an impact on their audience like the O.G. The franchise also produced a television series, The Exorcist, which did well. Coming back to the movies, one failed sequel after the other slowly extinguished the fans’ hopes, and they gave up on the franchise altogether.

After the catastrophe of Die Another Day, the James Bond franchise desperately needed a fresh start. What made the failure of the Pierce Brosnan film so fascinating was how by the book it was. It followed every single thing that worked in the franchise and created a compilation film. Since this approach did not work, the creators had to get quite creative when they were making Casino Royale.
Daniel Craig in Casino Royale [Credit: Sony Pictures]There were many approaches taken during the making of the movie, and its untraditionality made it the most traditional Bond film to come out in years. The film was a masterpiece in every way, and the biggest reason for this was its ability to take risks. A major difference in the movie was its focus on characters and intentions rather than appeal and audience satisfaction.

Martin Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood, and even at the age of 81 is churning out pieces of art. The filmmaker last helmed the crime-Western Killers of the Flower Moon, and is already gearing up for his next project. He remains one of the few individual voices still making films today.
Scorsese’s statements about cinema and the way superhero films were taking over the medium had drawn a lot of flack from fans. The director’s comparison of Marvel movies to theme parks sparked outrage as well as a popular meme template. However, even he would agree to one scene from Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel as cinema.

Big-budgeted films with a stellar cast are normally expected to perform better at the box office than low-budgeted films. However, the 2024 box office so far has seen more major flops, big-budget films failing to make it to the breakeven point, and low-budgeted movies garnering millions across the world. British actor Henry Cavill has arrayed a wide range of roles in his screen career, but to the average moviegoer, he is probably best known as the most recent Superman in the four DC Comics films under the tutelage of Zack Synder. Despite his obvious physical strengths, Cavill’s performances in the dual roles of Clark Kent and the “Man of Steel” are considered by many to be more character-based than in other editions that reflects his priorities as an actor.
In fact, Cavill has taken on a number of other iconic characters in his career, from Sherlock Holmes in two “Enola Holmes” films, superspy Napoleon Solo in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and even the mythological Theseus in “Immortals.” And while he usually portrays heroes, he’s not afraid of being a bad guy now and then, most notably as Tom Cruise’s nemesis in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood. The maverick director is known for films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and the Kill Bill franchise. He is known for his particular brand of violent entertainers with a tribute to the films and TV shows he grew up with in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
In 2008, the filmmaker made one of his best-reviewed works Inglorious Basterds. The film saw a group of US soldiers infiltrating Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
