Charming but flawed
28 November 2023
I recently re-watched this show 20 years after it was part of my childhood TV rotation. It's incredibly likable and cozy. The characters are all distinct with their own motivations, flaws, and growth. Salem is a gem.

But don't think too deeply about the lore and rules of magic, which is hard to do during a binge watch. The way magic works is inconsistent; circumstances that resolved one episode are broken in another. It's a kid's sitcom and magic is the 'deus ex machina' to create and resolve any problem of the day.

The "other realm" (magic land) is made up of hilariously low-budget reused sets that are fun to spot on re-watches. It's cheesy and not at all believable, but it doesn't matter - it's fun! Less fun is the disappearance of many characters over the years, from friends Jenny and Valerie to several teachers and even the leading aunt characters in the last season. It's always abrupt, barely explained, and feels disjointed. This is a show for occasional or out of order syndication viewing, even though there are several longer story arcs.

If you can look past these flaws, you can have a really good time watching Sabrina. The quality dips during the last few seasons as it overstays its welcome, but especially the first 4 seasons are goofy, silly fun.
