Fun addition to the action/comedy genre that's an absolute must see
10 August 2023
Smokey and the Bandit (1977) is a movie that I recently watched for the first time in a long time on MAX. The storyline follows a man known as the Bandit who is an elite driver who has been paid to get a truck full of beer illegally across state lines. He works with a trucker friend to accomplish this mission. The bandit's role will be to confuse law enforcement long enough so his trucker friend can complete the task. If they're successful, they'll be well paid. They'll need some help from some old, and new, friends to make it happen.

This movie is directed by Hal Needham (Hooper) and stars Burt Reynolds (Striptease), Sally Fields (Forrest Gump), Jerry Reed (The Waterboy), Paul Williams (Battle for the Planet of the Apes), Pat McCormick (Scrooged) and Jackie Gleason (The Honeymooners).

The storyline for this has a classic Dukes of Hazard feel to it with the heroes being good old country boys that are too smart for the buffoon police officers. The love story in this is wild, but fun, and the characters are perfectly cast and impossible to not root for. The trucker dynamics are fun and there's a nice blend of cool stunts, witty one-liners and cheesy comedy. Reynolds has a charming feel that oozes through the screen in a classic womanizer fashion.

Overall, this is a fun addition to the action/comedy genre that's an absolute must see. I would score this a 7-7.5/10 and strongly recommend it.
