Black Rain (1989)
6/10
I didn't love it, but it was decent

A lesser-known Ridley Scott film, and one of two 1989 films that have the title Black Rain. I haven't seen the other yet (have been meaning to), but from what I understand it's very different to this.

Scott's Black Rain has a premise that sees two American cops escorting a member of the yakuza to Japan after he's arrested, only for the criminal to escape basically as soon as they touchdown. What then follows is an increasingly desperate mission to recapture him.

Overall, it's fairly good. There are a couple of sequences that really stand out, and much of the rest of the film is competent, and maybe a little workmanlike. I feel like that's something can be said about a decent number of Ridley Scott movies, or at least the ones that aren't absolute classics.

If anything, Black Rain makes me wonder how Ridley's brother, Tony, would've handled this film had he been the Scott who directed it. Given how reliably Tony Scott could make crime/action/thriller movies, I wonder whether Black Rain would've been more in his wheelhouse.
