Dated and Foreign, But Funny
2 March 2023
This is a crazy, but highly watchable French comedy starring Louis de Funes in a film with several intersecting plot lines revolving around a NYC Orthodox Rabbi's visit to his cousin in France. De Funes is a bit of Charlie Chaplin and a bit of Benny Hill in this one. There are many very funny sight gags around his incidental involvement with the French mafia. The characters are colorful. The gags are silly, and somewhat predictable, but they will ,male you laugh. The film is too politically incorrect, filled with racist and anti-semitic punch lines around De Funes' character; however m the film is not racist. De Funes' behavior is the joke. This one is a great way to gain insight into French comedy, through one its stars of the 1970's. French with English Subtitles.
