Review of Sadko

Sadko (1953)
5/10
Visually a treat, but paced much too slowly.

Called the Magic Voyage of Sinbad in English isn't as bad.

It concerns an attempt of Sadko, aka Sinbad, to get the bird of happiness and bring it home to his city. This is one of the films from director Aleksandr Ptushko and its a mixed bag, as most of his films are. (Ptushko specialized in fantasy films that were grand spectacles that were, in their original forms, very much love letters to mother Russia. American producers took the films, removed the politics and released them usually as part of kiddie matinées) Visually the film is treat, even if the underwater sequence is laughable even by the standards of the day.The film shows great imagination, but is leadenly directed with sequences going on much too long for a film that is really about a quest.

Worth a gander if you are forgiving or if you like non-Hollywood spectacles.
