Tonight’s MPTF’s telethon on Ktla raised 858,493 for Hollywood’s 101-year-old charitable organization – exceeding the 750,000 that it had targeted. Jeff Bridges, who was one of the many stars who appeared on the show, noted that the MPTF is in “dire straits” due to the extraordinary Covid expenses it’s racked up over the last three years.
MPTF said in October that it’s facing its “imminent demise” unless it raises 10 million-12 million in cash donations by the end of this year in order to meet its bank line compliance and continue ongoing operations.

At the recent MPTF 100th anniversary gala, Jodie Foster shared the stage with actor Harry Northup, someone she’d shared the screen with in such classic films as Taxi Driver and Silence of the Lambs.
Foster told THR that she reconnected with Northup, who lives at MPTF’s Woodland Hills campus, during the pandemic when she started logging on to Zoom to play games with retirement home residents. Foster seemed especially partial to the popular party game Mafia, a social deduction game that can also be played as Werewolf.
“Sometimes I like to do it in character,” explains Foster, fresh from filming the Diana Nyad biopic Nyad opposite Annette Bening for directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. “I have an Italian guy [that I do] who is really resentful of the fact that everybody thinks he’s Mafia and he thinks it’s profiling. It’s a good acting game.

When Jeffrey Katzenberg was a kid growing up in New York, his father Walter, “a very successful, man-about-town stockbroker,” always carried a wad of discreetly folded 100 bills. As he moved through the day, Walter would “quietly and stealthily” slip one to people in his orbit, whether it be “a doorman, a waiter, a valet, someone standing on the street with a sign about needing help, a maid, a taxi driver, a guitarist on a corner.”
One day, Jeffrey asked his father to explain the generous habit. “He asked me if I ever looked behind us. I said, ‘No,’ and he said, ‘Well, the next time we’re out together, please look back and tell me what you see,’” Jeffrey recalled from the stage Saturday night during the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 100 Years of Hollywood: A Celebration of Service. “The next day, I...

Director Jonathan Kaplan's 1987 science fiction comedy, "Project X", starring Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt, will be re-released by Anchor Bay on DVD.
Produced by Walter F. Parkes and Lawrence Lasker, "Project X" makes a political commentary on the ethics of animal research :
"...grad student 'Teri MacDonald' (Hunt) trains a chimp named 'Virgil' to use 'American Sign Language'. When her research grant is not renewed, Virgil is taken away. Teri is told that Virgil will be sent to a zoo. Instead, he is taken to an Air Force base to be used in a top-secret research project involving platforms designed to simulate the operation of aircraft.
"Meanwhile, 'Airman Jimmy Garrett' (Broderick), as punishment for misconduct involving a romantic interlude in an aircraft cockpit, is assigned to the same chimp project to which Virgil was sent. Jimmy begins to bond with Virgil and they become attached to one another.
