Fun
Jackbv1236 November 2022
I am picky about my comedies. I laughed at this one. It wasn't overly silly, but had some silly moments.

The story is about a big time movie in a small town where a local gets pulled in. In this case, the production company's costumer never showed and they couldn't find a replacement, so they hired a local designer, Kerry.

Kimberley Sustad is perfect for this part. She is a good fit for this style of comedy. Her timing and demeanor work here. She also has decent chemistry with John Brotherton, who plays the overbearing, self-absorbed star of the show, Brad.

The best gags are early, as Kerry is trying to fit into a world she knows nothing about. I think the writers stretched her fitting in a little too well as more than once she saves the day in ways unrelated to costuming. After the novelty of her assimilation winds down, the tenor of the film switches to the developing romance. There is also a secondary romance which also has funny and sweet moments.

The conflict, climax and ending were a surprise to me, but also a little convoluted.

This is probably one I will watch again.

Unusually Good!
anamariamicheli8 November 2022
This movie stands by itself as one of a kind among the forever cheesy, irrelevant plots, terribly written and equally terribly delivered lines and poor acting so characteristic of Hallmark movies.

For once, we face an original plot with, all in all, very good acting. Leading and supporting cast all contribute to an entertaining, good quality flow. The lead actor is superb in the comedy passes, great facial expressions!

Believable, fun, multi-sided characters who can deliver lines and make good use of humor. Great settings, unobtrusive music appropriately used and good costumes.

I could have rated it 10 but for a couple of very cheesy scenes (one of them being the final scene).

A Fun Christmas Movie
Ekm8285116 November 2022
Lights, Camera, Christmas! Was a fun Christmas movie to watch. I think the Kimberley Sustad and John Brotherton pairing worked very well. I love the "big star falls for down to earth/girl next door" movie trope. Kim and John had a fun banter and chemistry together. I also liked the movie's supporting characters and the side storyline of the estranged directors finding their way back to each other. The movie's last minute conflict and ending seemed a bit rushed but overall, Lights, Camera, Christmas! Was a fun Christmas movie...and it was nice to see Kimberley Sustad as a Hallmark movie lead again!

Warning: Spoilers
The commercials looked so good. I was so excited when this movie finally premiered but the pacing was odd. I don't know what went wrong but the movie just flowed in an odd way. Maybe because of the interview panel and then flash back to the movie? It was great story and I loved the actors but the "problem" they have was sooooo sudden and then fixed so quickly? It was so out of place and made the movie really weird at the end. 3/4 of the movie was great though and I'll rewatch it. Maybe it gets better with rematches? It is odd that she is the only one making the costumes. Don't they need huge team? Who dresses the rest of the cast? Hope the rest of the Christmas movies are better.

Way different, way good
montgomerysue7 November 2022
This is really unique for a Hallmark holiday movie. It does not follow the typical formula and it even has Hallmark poking some playful fun at itself and the making of their Christmas films. The story is told in flashback, as the makers of a Santa movie participate in a "question and answer" at the premier of their latest film. The first hour is very funny as you get to know these characters and their circumstances. Sometimes, the humor is very cheeky and quick so you have to play close attention, but it can be hilarious. The second hour is more sentimental and dramatic, but it is still very engaging as these likable characters come to grips with their personal conflicts.

There is a lot of credit to be given all around here. Gary Goldstein has written a script that is fresh with crisp and realistic dialogue, the direction by Dennis Weaver is smart, attractive, and different, the production values, costumes, and sets are very well done, and casting director Jackie Lind has assembled an excellent cast, with some of the best Hallmark has in its stable, all of whom give it their all.

Kimberley Sustad and John Brotherton are just terrific as the big star, Brad, and his rather reluctant costumer, Kerry. The always excellent Sustad is the heart and soul of the story, and Brotherton is wonderful as the conflicted big time movie star. Still, they can be very funny and casting these two together makes the whole thing work. Their performances just shine here. Plus, there is Laura Soltis as Kerry's mother, a gushing fan of Brad's, who is very good, as is the rest of the cast : particularly Matthew Kevin Anderson as the director of the Santa movie, Leila Harrison as its screenwriter, and Veronica Long as Brad's co-star.

All in all, this is really different, really engaging, and really well done, thanks particularly to Sustad, Brotherton, director Weaver, and writer Goldstein. The best of the new 2022 Hallmark holiday season so far.

Ahhhhh. Hallmark is back with quality movies.
texasfolk7 November 2022
Hallmark is back with quality movies. Although I enjoy watching Hallmark more than any channel, it seems like many of the movies are pushed out like puppy mills. Truth be told I have turned off several before they even finished.

This wasn't one of them. Kimberly has never made a bad or even boring Hallmark movie. There is a reason she has risen through the ranks to become one of Hallmark's great stars.

I don't know Brotherton very well, but he sure did nail the part of a conceited movie star. I was also impressed with his tenderness when it called for an emotional scene.

Overall I thought the set was great, the direction was wonderful and the overall chemistry was extremely good, and I mean extremely good. Kudos to the casting Director.

This is a Hallmark movie. How could you possibly ruin it with spoilers? Everyone knows who will end up with who they are meant to be with and it will always be a happy ending.

But to get to the happy ending you must first watch the movie all the way through. I highly recommend that you do this. This is a movie worth watching start to finish.

A decent romantic comedy
lisafordeay8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Lights,Camera,Christmas is a 2022 made for tv festive romantic comedy about a young woman named Kerry who lands a gig as a costume designer for a movie that is being filmed in her hometown. Problems arise when meets the leading man Brad Baker who is playing Nick in My Secret Santa and later starts to fall for him. Will they, won't they get together well you have to find out. Overall I liked it. I knew from the get go what was going to happen as like every single romantic comedy follows the same thing over and over again. If you like Hallmark movies then you might like this. Predictable but cute.

Bingo!
VetteRanger7 November 2022
After watching one and abandoning another disappointing Christmas movie today, we began watching Lights, Camera, Christmas! With a bit of trepidation. Could it be a three strikes day?

LCC took a big swing at the next pitch and hit a home run. I think it's a bit brave, as this movie is very self-aware of making Hallmark Christmas movies and is an utter satire of the process.

Since it's comedy satire, the characters are allowed to go over the top ... and they do ... but they don't abuse it. We found many chuckle moments and an occasional surprised laugh out loud.

The stealth romance is the producer and director, a successful filmmaking couple who split up and talk through an intermediary, even though they're standing right beside each other. Will agreements in making this movie bring them back together? Watch and find out!

One big issue: the romantic partner
rezza66 January 2023
This's a cute story and all but everytime I watch a movie with Kimberley Sustad, I know I will not enjoy it because I'll be distracted by her gloomy face. I have yet to see one scene where her face shows joy. She is always frowning, surprised, or,serious. To me, her face is insatiable. If you want a better rating, next time, choose an actress that can express joy..The other actors expressed their feeling correctly. The actress who plays Kimberly Sustad's mom is the opposite. Her botoxed face is all smiling, all the time. ?The couple who play the couple who used to me married play their parts perfectly.

Kimberley Sustad & a great cast shine in this fun look at the making of a Christmas movie
MichaelByTheSea9 November 2022
As a long time Hallmark movie fan, I've often wished that they would poke fun at themselves and their movies every now and then as kind of a "wink wink" and nod to the audience. But I can't recall a movie that ever did that before "Lights Camera Christmas", a Christmas movie about Christmas movies. There's multiple references to fake snow and It even stars a character who calls himself the "King of Christmas Movies". At this point, that title probably belongs to Andrew Walker, but a less used John Brotherton is perfectly cast as the pompous fictional movie star Brad Baxter. He is, as Kerry puts it: "a little full of himself" (although Brotherton is effective in making Brad less of a caricature as the movie progresses)

Kimberly Sustad plays Kerry, a clothing store owner and wannabe designer. She's great as always (I loved her in "Christmas by Starlight"). Laura Soltis plays her mom Nancy and she's also delightful. She's one of my favorite "Older Moms" in Hallmark movies along with Barbara Niven. When, at the beginning, Kerry pleads ignorance about who Brad Baxter is, Nancy rattles off some very Hallmarky fake movie names including "There's No Christmas Like Snow Christmas" (that really needs to be the name of a future movie):

Nancy: "How come none of these movies even ring a bell?" Kerry: "Well they all sort of blend together."

So true. I love inside jokes like this. Then, during a panel discussion, there's this:

Audience member: "How did you end up choosing where to shoot?" Caleb: "Two words- tax incentives"

Ever since the U. S. Canada free trade agreement in 1988, and the implementation of generous government subsidies, Vancouver has become known as "Hollywood North", resulting in nearly $5 billion in film production spending there last year alone. A lot of that was spent making Hallmark movies. So yeah, tax incentives.

Although the use of a go between (Jamie) between producers Jill and Caleb was a bit silly, I can attest to what's it's like when the acrimony is so great you need a middle man to communicate with an ex spouse. But there's actually a touching scene about the line "When you have the right person on your side anything's possible" and a nice thaw later on. Matthew Kevin Anderson as Caleb and Leila Harrison as Jill were impressive in fleshing out their characters, as was Veronica Long as Mariah and Kallie Hu as Jamie. The entire cast was strong.

I've always thought of Kimberly Sustad as kinda like the beautiful somewhat dorky girl next door who doesn't realize she's beautiful. There's one scene in which Kimberly Sustad is wearing a loose white blouse, with her hair done up a little different, surrounded by Christmas decorations, where she looks...absolutely gorgeous. Then again, she looks gorgeous throughout the movie, all while exuding a unique quirky charm that sets her apart from other actresses.

There's also one point in the story where I was annoyed that she had done something that I thought was really stupid (and not something a modern woman would do) but then her powerful performance explaining herself to he mother was very effective in convincing me that she, in fact, actually did what she honestly thought was right for her. She's a very talented actress. And she has some serious "dagger eyes".

One of the best moments in the movie came when I thought for sure we were going to get another stupid "almost kiss" (I'm soooo tired of that trope) but then the couple actually kissed. In what was a surprisingly sensual scene. Far from the end of the movie. That was definitely not cookie cutter Hallmark. And I loved it.

I enjoyed the movie, but there were a few things that bothered me. I'm not in the movie business, but I am a lawyer. If my client's costume designer breached their contract to go work on a Matt Damon film, I'd let that designer know she'd be coming back to a big fat lawsuit if she didn't fulfill her contractual obligations. Hallmark writers often sacrifice real world legal and financial considerations in order to make their plots work. But having the original costume designer suddenly drop dead, instead of doing another job, would have achieved the same result without sacrificing realism.

And speaking of real world financial considerations, Kerry may be a great designer, but she's apparently a lousy businesswoman. She owned a store that seemed constantly empty (except when Brad and Mariah showed up) and she was 3 months behind on the rent (a notice that flashed on the screen indicated that she owed $5,500). Her mom offered to help but she candidly acknowledged that if her business is to survive, "it needs to be self sufficient".

But then the movie producer inexplicably offered to buy her entire store stock. First, that's unlikely given that it seems unrealistic for a movie production to show up on location without ANY costumes and why would they need a bunch of random women's clothing? And yet she doesn't negotiate a "no returns" sale, even though her store would be left without anything to sell before the holidays.

Even worse, when offered a job by the desperate producer, she is reluctant to accept. It's one thing to fail to use her superior bargaining position to extract the kind of compensation that would resolve her financial problems, but to initially pass on the opportunity altogether? Thankfully, Nancy's colorful threat to Kerry convinced her to accept the position.

I liked the panel discussion format, but that may have left them short on time at the end which seemed a bit rushed and poorly set up. And that final green screen shot looked way too fake.

But I enjoyed the movie, in large part because of the cast, especially Kimberly Sustad.

Lights, camera, narcissist!
sevenseas20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you have ever been abused by a narcissist, this movie is likely to leave you feeling depressed. Yes, there are so many narcissistic lead characters in Hallmark movies but this one is the worst I have ever seen and it has one of the worst endings I've ever seen.

Even though it technically has a happy ending, if you've been in a relationship with a narcissist, you know that this happy ending is not going to last long.

If anyone has been in a whirlwind romance, only for it to end badly and to end up being left behind, forgotten about, this movie might upset you.

The lead actor who is really funny and has great comedic timing , is also a love bombing, narcissistic actor in the movie, focused on himself and the most arrogant lead I have ever seen in a Hallmark movie.

If you are familiar with narcissistic abuse, trauma bonding & love bombing, this movie may not be romantic to you whatsoever. I just found this movie really depressing and upsetting.

It's Hallmark so of course, it has a happy ending, and it was actually the first Hallmark movie I ever watched where I wasn't sure that it was going to have a happy ending!!

But even though it has a happy ending, you know they're probably going to be together for maybe another six months before he finds something else more interesting and leaves her behind again.

I watched this because I loved a lot of the actors in it , it was a fun plot and for about the first hour it was just cute and fun and lighthearted and then it started to feel like real life, and it started to feel really depressing.

Christmas Film about the Filming of a Christmas Film
HallmarkJenny9 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A Christmas movie is filmed in Kerry's hometown with the famous "King of Christmas Movies" actor. Serendipitously, Kerry's entire shop's apparel becomes to the costumes for the movie and she is then hired to work as the costume designer! Kerry excels on the movie set and the movie's big star is captivated by her, encouraging her to pursue her dreams and making her his new dream.

Plot of the Movie:

My Favorite Santa is about a baker who has lost her belief in Christmas and a guy who claims to be Santa.

MeetCute: Brad gets an important call from his agent, but his phone dies. He spots Kerry walking near him and grabs her phone to call his agent back. He haughtily gives the phone back to her, tells her she has missed calls and texts, as she stands aghast at him taking her phone.

Brad and the leading lady later wander into her local shop and he is upset that she does not recognize him at all.

Mid-Movie Kiss: Brad invites Kerry to dinner with a gold enveloped note declaring himself a not-so-secret-admirer in a really cute scene. The date is on set by a beautiful decorated Christmas Tree with a PA dropping snow so that it looks like it is snowing outside their window.

Brad asks Kerry to dance with him and the two kiss each other very romantically.

Ending Kiss: Kerry is excelling as a costume designer on set of the movie and Brad tells her that she was born for this career. He asks her to be his costumer on set of his new movie shooting in London. Kerry is offered a big fashion job in New York and turns it down to work on set of Brad's next edgy movie. Without telling Kerry, Brad backs out of the movie as he is anxious that this role will ruin his "good-guy" reputation. Kerry is understandably upset by this selfish decision.

Kerry goes on to work as a costumer with Caleb & Jill on their 6-movie deal at Dazzle Plus and Brad ends up opt-ing back into the "risky" movie that may tarnish his brand. They both tell each other how the other made them feel brave and bold and they kiss at the after-party for the movie. Brad pulls her outside the Los Angeles Theatre and the two kiss again, after Kerry gives Brad's signature ::Christmas movie wink::!

"Who's your favorite Santa now?" -Brad

"The real one." -Kerry.

This was fun!
mbiv77710 November 2022
This is not the usual Hallmark, by the numbers movie.

The first half is played for laughs. The two leads were excellent, playing off each other with perfect comic timing. I think that's what An Unexpected Christmas was going for, but missed.

This is easily Kim Sustad's best role ever. She was near perfect.

The bickering producer/director couple were amusing if predictable, but the character of Mariah is lovely, and Jamie is cute as a button. I think they've both got bright futures ahead of them.

The ending took it up a notch too.

There are certain Hallmark Christmas movies you can watch over and over again: The Mistletoe Promise, Write Before Christmas, etc.

I think you can probably add this one to that list. Well done.

Nicely Developed & Fun to Watch
Pete-Claus2 December 2022
Do not be put off by the egotistical behavior displayed by the lead actor at the start of the movie -- that could be enough to turn off some people and make them not want to watch this delightful movie. In part this movie is a spoof of actors with big egos, and it pulls off that caricature very well! But it also reveals that beneath such facades can be very different people, with real feelings and emotions resulting from their character's backstory, and the movie pulls off that aspect very well, too.

All in all, an engaging story.

This movie has all of the elements necessary to make it one of the best of 2022: good acting, humor, plausible plot twists that I did not see coming, a romance that develops naturally, and a satisfying ending that pulls everything together and leaves you feeling good.

This is one is of my Top 10 favorite 2022 Christmas movies of 2022. You can see my other favorite 2022 Christmas movies by clicking on my profile link above; then look for "2022 FAVORITE CHRISTMAS ROM-COMs" under "Lists".

Even better the second time
MickyG33331 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
8.2 stars.

I rated it 7.5 the first viewing. What was I thinking?

Kerry (Sustad) and Brad (Brotherton) are an odd couple of sorts, but they really light up the screen. Brad is creepy and weird, but strangely charming as an "A" list superstar actor, and Kerry is a sweetheart clothing designer and store owner. Both are highly talented in their respective fields. His primary acting roles have been in Christmas movies (homage to Hallmark?). She has untapped talent in designing and selling really stylish clothing, but never got her dream shot. This story is about their adventure in making this film, falling in love, and the various pitfalls, and challenges that arise as a result.

One of the most important factors is the supporting cast. Her mother, who helps her run the store, is a total scene stealer (as if this movie needs one). The film producer/director/writer husband and wife combination are also quite fun to watch.

Kerry happens to be in the right place at the right time while Brad is filming his latest film in her hometown. Their meeting is fortuitous. It so happens the film's costume designer has left (on maternity leave I think) and they are in a bind, and Kerry is able to fill the spot temporarily. In turn this bolsters her career many-fold, now she can bring her true dream to fruition - to work for a competitive NYC clothing designer.

He inadvertently starts to fall for her, and she is only partially aware of the possibilities of romance with this seemingly unobtainable move star. It seems realistic considering she is just a normal girl with a regular career, and he being a red carpet familiar celebrity. They don't hit it off at first, it takes a while for her to chip away at his "superstar" facade but eventually his real charm surfaces and they seem to fall in love, but it's a very slow process for them because they both have deep rooted insecurities and lack of confidence - as any normal person would.

There are many cast members that contribute a lot of depth to this story. Her mother is endearing and very hip, the co-stars are all very engaging, the movie director/producer husband and wife duo were hilarious to watch as they sort out their own marital differences, using one of the assistants on the set as a go between relaying the message for them while they are literally standing right next to each other. Very funny, and although it's been done, it was humorous nonetheless.
