This episode of Archer is shockingly unfunny. The entire crew is headed on a mission, which in itself doesn't really make sense. Why is the whole crew going on a stealth mission?
The characters have all changed for the worse.
Kreiger brought a bomb and is trying to detonate it and kill everyone. Sure, he's always been weird, obviously, but this attempt at shocking us with something weirder, crazier, stupider, and nonsensical fails at being entertaining. It's simply unfunny.
Cheryl just repeatedly interjected with random, annoying comments that fell flat. The slapstick is not funny. She somehow digs a shallow grave without anyone noticing, adding to one of the more laboriously unfunny schticks the show has ever seen (topped only by Season 5).
We see Ray's character changing from sarcastic, relatable - and at times clutch - to angry, impatient, and useless. Forget the subtle humor around his character, forget the timing, the witty remarks, and everything else that made this character and this show great. This is franchise Archer. The machine must consume everything that was once good.
In terms of the plot, everything here we've seen before in Archer, only done better. The snake bite, most prominently, has been done before, but so, so, so much better (the drawing of the snake by Cyril and Ray will live rent free in my brain forever.) The "stranded in the jungle surrounded by deadly animal" has been done before, but better ("Let me finish!")
To be blunt, this episode piggybacks entirely off of the shows previous glory, and I would imagine any newcomer will be scared off instantly. Archer Season 3 is a monumental achievement by contrast, staring down uncertain about its modern counterpart, like the Acropolis of Greece, up on a giant hill in a Athens, stares down at a modern, unfamiliar, and less impressive world.
