Modern Archer standard I suppose
oguzschmenger25 August 2022
Even though Archer may never be as brillant, as it was 10 years ago, it's still 20 minutes full of good entertainment.

R. I. P Jessica Walter. The show will never be the same again without you Malory.

Turning a corner and moving on
unclehud26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Several looks backward, several layers of interplay, and a tentative (?) look forward. Archer mulls his motherless future. Lana worries about a possible daughterless future. Pam leads herself - yet again - into trouble. The gang, now branded as the boutique "Agency" looks at themselves as a group of colleagues, friends, and quasi-family. They still want to bring down The Man, and realize with a jolt that The Man is their boss. All this in the context of the famous, but top-secret, Clandestine-con.

But Ray Gillette is in charge?!?! How can this be? Can't wait to see what comes next.

Big change, good start
BobTop26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first show without Mallory is filled with changes. Lana is divorcing Robert but he is throwing a monkey wrench into the system by seeking custody of AJ. It seems that he's trying to punish Lana for leaving him. IIS is now the umbrella under which ISIS, now The Agency, operates. IIS is owned by Fabian who has stepped into Mallory's shoes very, very poorly. He succeeds in uniting the team in and by hating him.

Obviously there will be an adjustment period here even more pronounced than the coma seasons. Mallory was one of the key members of the show and adjusting to her absence will take a bit. But I think that this first episode provides a good base from which to build. The haters are gonna hate and there isn't much that can be done about them. But those of us who love Archer and the gang will keep watching and keep finding things to laugh at.

Archer is back.
peytonps15 October 2022
Can never get to the dark humor that Jessica Walter was able to provide but still a damn good show. Archer is back. I guess this review is too short to post, and I'm not one to drone on about how much I like something but Archer has been my favorite show for years now, and they have finally gotten back into the grove that I have been looking for. Loved the experimentation of the coma seasons, I mean they were bad and not funny but I liked the effort... either way I feel like they are back to normal, and I can't wait to watch each week. Archer is an all time personality/tv character, and can't wait to see how he is a dick each week. Need more seasons, love the show, never cancel FX.

Archer Showing Its Age
bkkaz1 September 2022
It took me a long, long time to finally watch Archer. People kept telling me about it since I'm a big spy movie fan. I'm not talking about junk like the Tom Cruise insults to Mission: Impossible! But the real deal, from the 40s through the 60s. I figured Archer would be just another Gen-X reiteration of all that, with some obvious smart-alecky jokes thrown in.

Well, I was half right. Archer is definitely Gen-X, right down to the ADHD need to constantly reference obscure factoids. But it was well done for many seasons, developing a kind of personality of its own.

But last season and this season, it's a shell of itself. It feels like it's just covering old ground, only without as much wit and energy. A lot has changed. The writing is now ordinary. The plots are recycled. Even the production has suffered -- the music, for instance, is terrible, this kind of generic action movie muzak that seems to be played a couple volume ticks too high. It's not their fault the great Jessica Walter is no longer with us, but as much as I like the guy from What We Do in the Shadows on that show, he's just bland as the boss here. Total miscasting.

I wouldn't want Archer to end. At the same time, I can't say this current iteration is doing justice to what for many seasons was one of the few consistently funny series on TV. Clearly, it's jumped the shark.

Should have quit a couple seasons ago
lusciousmuffins25 August 2022
I would applaud the efforts to retool Archer YET AGAIN, if the result was not such a mournful mess.

With the series's quality in steady decline, the death of Jessica Walter should have been the impossible to deny sign that it was time to stop.

My suspicion is greed drove the network and creators to forge ahead despite this, which is truly tragic considering how brilliantly irreverent this show once was.

The Archer opener of season 13 is a meandering re-visitation of previously seen storylines and jokes.

After so long on the air, with so many reinventions, this story feels tired.

Worse yet, it feels bereft of key characters, which cast something of a pall over what is supposed to be an escapist comedy.

I will not tell you there are no jokes that land in this particular episode; however, I will warn you they are few and far between.

What humor there is also is mediocre; there is nothing inventive here, nor anything that will make you throw your head back to laugh out loud.

For those who want Archer back anyway they can get him, this will probably satisfy you.

Alas, for those who are hoping to see a return to form, this episode will be extremely disheartening.

Quit while you are ahead
octavianungureanu25 August 2022
I am a big fan of this show. It was great until a point.

Now it's just painful to see how badly they've scripted the new seasons.

If you love the old Archer show, don't watch this, it will break your heart.

If you do, pay attention to the British guy's voiceover. That is as bad as a performance could get. I could hire the homeless across the street and he would do a better job. How the hell did that guy ever passed the screen test?

He would probably get a Emmy for it anyway.
