Russian film "Longing for the future" shows how the economical, mental, political and social attitudes of middle class Russian people have changed over the years. In this film, there is a concerted search to answer numerous vital questions in order to ascertain whether old days of communism era were better or new yet challenging period of free market economy is something which could make Russian people happy. At the heart of the film lies a sad love story spanning 25 years involving an ambitious Russian man Victor and his beloved Nastya. This narrative view point has been depicted by setting the film in two different countries: Russia and USA. Russian part of this film is set around 1975,a time when it was rather a commonplace occurrence to see comrade Lenin's portrait in background even during a dance ball of young students.Much of the film's serious action is to be found in its American setting. It is over there that eccentricities of several Russian businessmen is revealed.Veteran Russian director Sergei Tarasov's film is fairly neutral as far as its political view point is concerned. It is neither critical of communism nor overtly applauds capitalism.
