Yawn.
pidstr20 September 2020
From the moment you spot the continuity error in the opening scene (hey, how'd that shoe stand up by itself, and wasn't she still wearing the other one in the previous shot?), the tone is set for a by-the-numbers-coloured-within-the-lines vampire flick that wouldn't even make it on to the SciFi channel. The pacing's too slow, there are scenes that don't move the story forward, and a sad attempt at "gay's good, bigots bad" morality with a pointless bashing and a sexual awakening that seems to be there for no reason then someone wanted to film some girl on girl action. Even if this film had more nudity then one costume nip slip, that wouldn't create any real interest. This isn't a film to watch with your love interest, it's the film you put on when you really don't care what's on the screen while you make out with the sound just loud enough that the rest of the house can't hear what your really doing. It looks like one of those "Shot On Red, Same As Everyone Else Does" films, with no imagination or daring in the camera angles and make up, and a sound track that sounds like they wanted to try and make and '80's Vampire film. Go watch Lost Boys or Buffy instead. The only imaginative thing about it, is the fake 10 point reviews from the film makers freinds.

Less than Mediocre
Jim_Screechy14 September 2020
Unfortunately the cover art sums up this title pretty well. Its a cheesy vampire flick that has serious Sci-Fy channel overtones. Very amateurish, poorly acted written and directed. It's not really fun movie either so has very little going for it.

I can think of no good reason that anyone should watch it since it has no real entertainment value for anyone who isn't a sadist. Just give it a wide birth, unless your a filmography student and you want to know what not to do when making a production.

3/10 is an honest score.

This is one virus you don't want to catch...
paul_haakonsen17 September 2020
I will start out by saying that at least writers Sam Ashurst, Jerome Reygner-Kalfon, Sebastien Semon and Charlie Steeds tried. They failed, but at least they tried.

I sat down to watch director Charlie Steeds's 2020 movie "Vampire Virus", as I do like horror movies, and vampires are iconic screen monsters, so of course there was some appeal to this movie.

Turns out that I might as well have skipped on "Vampire Virus", because the storyline was just so mundane and bordering on being pointless that it was somewhat of a struggle to sit through the entire movie. I did manage to do so, though I can't really claim that I was particularly entertained by what this movie delivered.

The acting in the movie was adequate, although you should not expect to be blown away by any overly impressive accomplishments. I didn't recognize a single actor or actress in the movie. It should be said, though, that their acting performances are severely hindered by a total lack of proper script and storyline, and the fact that the written characters in the movie were so boring and devoid of characteristics, didn't really do much to put the performers in a good light.

For a vampire movie, then "Vampire Virus" was just a swing and a miss. The movie came and went without as much as a bite or a hiss. If you haven't heard of this movie, don't worry, you're not missing out on a great moment in vampire cinema.

I am still trying to figure out how a movie like "Vampire Virus" with a total lack of a proper script and storyline even makes it through production.

And before I forget, I have to mention the vampire teeth on the vampires in the movie. Wow. Just wow. Are you kidding me? Those were seriously the worst prosthetics that I have ever seen in vampire movies. It was so bad that it looked even worse than the plastic teeth you can buy for kids in stores around Halloween time.

My rating of "Vampire Virus" is a mere two out of ten stars. You might want to skip on this movie entirely, because it is a waste of time, money and effort. If you enjoy vampire movies, there are many other and better choices of movies to pick from.

Just like a 70's porn movie without the porn
OzMovieWatcher16 September 2020
Terrible movie.... just a mild step above a high school movie project. Very bad acting, poor script, no real story-line.

Seriously, using strawberry desert sauce for blood just does not work.

The way this movies is described and they way it was panning out, I was waiting for the sex scene..... but it never happened.

This is a terrible movie.... why bother making it?

No one could possibly like this movie
dneljon22 March 2021
I feel certain any positive review is by someone involved in or affiliated with the movie or someone in it. If it had closed captioning at least I would know what people were saying since the background music is BLARING over the dialog. Some parts you can hear the dialog, many you cannot. The head Vampire missed acting school and most of her lines cannot be heard because of the music.

Not bad for a low budget movie
drogon00118 September 2020
I've seen triple A movies that gave me a frustration migraine cuz they were so bad. (Armageddon with Bruce Willis, for example)

Vampire Virus is surprisingly entertaining - if one's able to see past the obvious low budget production. The acting has a rather mixed quality, and the sound could be better here and there. The flick still has charm, despite the flaws. I enjoyed watching it and that alone matters for me. The entertainment value.

A massive 4

That's all I can give this forgettable movie. If you find yourself at a loss and sod all else to do, or you need something on the TV while clipping your toenails, then this is the movie for you. Some acting was just ok, the rest took me back to the 70's. If there's any nudity in this thing, I missed it. Watchable, just.

Better than the overall review score, but needed a better script
movie_ape7 October 2020
The cinematography is good, with clear colours and scenery. The music in the opening credits was awesome, as was the credit sequence with the blood / water clouds and the neon pink font. I loved that, and alone that put this higher than so much stuff I watched recently. The music throughout is excellent.

The movie was actually shot by someone who cared, and the director actually did a good job in my opinion since the film looks very stylish, day shots, night shots, inside and outside. There is a dramatic visual change from the night world such as the night club and seduction scene with the vampire compared to the daylight of the main character and her friends/etc.

However, this movie has a simple plot and really the script should have been better to achieve the story. For example they have the witness who is married to the vamp, in a straight jacket in a tiny interrogation room. He sees blood and lunges at the detective, then a guard shoots him in the face with an mp5. All of this seems extremely over the top, and I think a writer/director with more experience would have toned this down and set up the scene to be more realistic, if the end goal was the witness vampire to be killed before giving up any information I can think of literally 10 ways of doing this better.

I think what this movie needs to go to the next level is some better editing, it was a little choppy in places. Also some of the acting was off, and some of the dialogue was a little too expected/cliche from some characters. This movie offers nothing really that wasn't achieved in 'Vampires' from John Carpenter, for example, or the blade series of films. Sadly this comes across as a waste of time, see as written in other reviews.

Anyway I love the synthwave/retrowave theme across the whole picture as well as the stylish visuals and lighting; the nightclub scene with the vampire seducing the main character for example was sexy even if a little cheesy. The sound track was a big bonus.

5/10.

Who wants to live forever?
nogodnomasters27 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens in Romania where a vampire virus is developed. An infected patient bites a staff member who manages to escape. The film then comes to the US where Jennifer (Natalie Martins) who never goes out, goes out and is seduced and bitten, Yes we see that coming.

People get bitten, but they don't have any real super powers other than that mirror thing. Held my interest for most of the way.

Guide: F-word. Sex. Brief blurred nudity.

Inadequate Horror, Cheap Production Values and Misguided Direction
Uriah4330 November 2021
This film begins at a clandestine laboratory somewhere in Romania with research being conducted on living human subjects. To that effect, a nurse by the name of "Izabella" (Jessica Alonzo) enters one of the locked rooms to administer some kind of medication and upon doing so is savagely bitten by the patient. Realizing that she will now become a test subject she escapes from the laboratory leaving the lead scientist to handle the chaos that follows. The scene then shifts to America where a single woman by the name of "Jennifer" (Natalie Martins) is being pressured by some of her female colleagues to go to a night club with them. She reluctantly agrees and it's during this time that she meets Izabella who seduces her and not only infects her with the same virus but subsequently turns her into a vampire in the process. What Izabella doesn't realize, however, is that the police have identified her as a suspect into several murders recently committed within the city and they are rapidly closing in on her location. Now rather than reveal any more, I will just say that I happened to see the poster for this movie while browsing the internet and thought it might be an interesting film to check out. Sadly, I was very disappointed overall due to a number of rather obvious flaws. For starters, the director (Charlie Steeds) seems to think that scenes involving gay and lesbian sexuality somehow meshes well with modern vampire lore. From what I understand, he initially filmed an orgy scene of that nature but was prohibited by the producer from including it into the final release. Personally, I thought the scenes of a sexual nature he was allowed to include weren't all that important to the overall story anyway. So, whether he was trying to stir up some controversy or make a point of some kind didn't really matter. But that's just my personal opinion and others may disagree. Regardless, there were two other issues which stood out even more with the first being Izabella's phony accent which became worse the longer the film lasted. The other problem concerned the fangs worn by Izabella which looked much too cheap and artificial-even for a low budget production of this nature. For what it's worth, there were a couple of good things to note with the acting on the part of Natalie Martins and Peter Nofsgard (as her gay roommate "Jack") being solid enough for the most part. Likewise, the lighting and background music was also adequate as well. Be that as it may, none of these attributes were even remotely good enough to compensate for the problems noted earlier and I have rated this film accordingly. Below average.

Watchable but barely...
moorek8 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Low budget, novice actors, simplistic plot, continuity errors but still worth a quick watch. You can watch it free on Youtube or watch the 10 minute longer version on Prime. You'll know what extra parts you'll see in the longer version as some are in the trailer.

It is meant to be erotic and at times it is but not enough to be considered an erotic thriller or horror movie. Yet not vampiric enough to be a good vampire movie.

The acting is okay at best although I did think the lead actress playing Jennifer was very realistic as a regular, hard working person who didn't party. I would like to see her in other things.

The overall plot line is full of holes which the director didn't even try to plug. One of the most obvious is Lt. Peterson, outside and calling for backup, but we never see him again yet there is no indication he was chased or killed. He was waiting for the SWAT team to arrive but when they did, he wasn't there. Just gone from the story line.

It was interesting that although the vampires seem to heal, they can still be killed and we see at least three shot and they seem to stay dead.

Really not worth watching but if it is on Youtube and you are bored then watch it.

Enjoyable if slightly flawed British vampire effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder26 October 2020
Going out for a night with friends, a woman meets a seductive female vampire in the nightclub they frequent and is taken home, but when she awakes the next day with a strange infection and strange superhuman powers she realizes she's become infected with a strange disease that turns victims into bloodthirsty vampires.

This wasn't too bad of an effort. One of the better features of this one is the wholly enjoyable setup that manages to get everything together rather nicely. Getting the virus released from the beginning by showing the escape from the research facility and seeing it take over the community with the aftermath of the attacks that the officers are investigating is a nice tie-in, much like how it connects to the group with a pretty nicely-woven double inclusion with both the roommate's boyfriend being the investigating officer as well as the group seducing her by themselves. There's also quite a lot to like with the manner of how the virus spreads and gets involved in the community. Acting like a zombie virus with the infected getting attacked and then developing a bacterial infection that denotes who the culprit is and that they have it, this becomes quite intriguing with the inclusion of those aspects into a vampire storyline. As she begins to change and transform into one which denotes the kind of film this really is even with the new build-up about what's happening to her, there's a lot to like with how this turns her into these beings quite gradually. The other factor to really like here is the fun action and setup featured in the finale where everything comes together. With the full reveal of the virus and how they're transmitted into the next victims, the storyline moves into a solid series of action scenes that show the growing powers and confidence of the vampire coming to fruition against the invading swarm of officers looking to take them out. This is a solid action setup that gets quite a lot to like with the screaming vampires coming out of the shadows causing tons of chaos which results in some nice action and gore, holding this one up for the most part. There are some big issues featured in this one. The main problem is the seemingly scattered storyline that takes quite a while before it fully reveals the intention of what's going on. Although it has a lot to like with the throughline of the various storylines, that doesn't occur until quite late in the film making it appear as a rather random series of events for the longest time. The other issue here is the seemingly human vulnerabilities of the vampires, who are taken out with simple gunshots and nothing else which goes hand-in-hand with their ability to walk in sunlight that's never explained. These are the main issues holding this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Brief Nudity.

Jéssica Alonso Rocks

Not many movies hold my attention, but Jéssica Alonso brings us a performance similar to Alaliyah in "Queen of the Damned".

Ambivalent
kosmasp3 June 2022
I can imagine that if you dig the message the movie tries to convey, you may be able to like this more than the average score is saying here. Is it a triumph of homosexual love - it has something in it that can be considered inclusive. But it also is badly made - low budget, acting wise and many more flaws one can find here.

There is not much more to say here, other than that there is blood, but the sexual element is kept at a minimum here (hinted at). But even the violence that is there ... well it has been done better before. Which brings us back to the budget of course. Really only for hardcore horror fans ... and those who like the parallels this is giving us. Love bites and all that. A sour note ending is not helping either by the way - but it is in tune with the mediocre (at best) beginning ...

Vampire Virus is Such a memorable movie
roger_202015 September 2020
Breathtaking. I was not expecting such tremendous performances from the actors but they delivered beyond my expectations. It's all about what suffering people have to take to suppress their inner pain. And also it busted many myths regarding vampires. A must watch. A great treat for the senses. 10/10

An American vampire movie... Set in the UK with no Americans in it?
joncolley22 January 2021
I quite like the (very) basic premise of this, but I don't know why?

It's hard to see past the bad script, acting, effects and low budget... Oh, and bad attempts at humour and erm... everything else really.

Actually, I don't know why I'm not marking this lower because it's really not good. However, it has something going for it and I don't know what? It might genuinely be because it's so naff.

This is the only vampire movie I've ever seen where the vampires lair is the grotty basement of a local pub with a few candles and curtains hung around the place - becos it's earotiiicccc...

Interesting
logannodine31 March 2024
This movie was interesting for starters. At the same time it was kind of slow. It also at the same time has a noir to it, like the club scene with the lighting and spectacular soundtrack. And even thought the cast is a bunch of nameless nobody's some of them can still act. At times the story could get confusing and you are kind of stuck wondering exactly what is happening. The ending was predicable and unoriginal. There is also elements that I think weren't necessary and didn't make sense. In certain there is also continuity issues and lack of basic logic. All together it was a great film that may not turn heads but is a good way to burn an hour or two.

Inarguably flawed and imperfect, but much better than it should be
I_Ailurophile17 October 2021
Forthright, eschewing subtleties, and employing tropes and film convention at its leisure, there's no mistaking that this is rather inelegant, and direct to the point of caring nothing for any usual critiques. The movie is going to tell the story it wants, in the way that it wants, and that's that. But it also gives strong consideration to details like costume design, hair and makeup, lighting, and set design and decoration. The flashy logos presented in the opening credits to list musical contributions would seem to portend unfortunately bombastic selections - and they do to some extent reflect the bluntness of the writing - but to my delight the soundtrack is also in the least pretty suitable for each passing scene, and even helps to lend atmosphere. No one will ever mistake 'Vampire virus' for an essential cinematic classic, yet despite a somewhat indelicate touch, and against all odds, this is reasonably entertaining.

With that said:

The vampire fangs are maybe the most inauthentic canines I've ever seen. Those exaggerated tusks would seem to demand a complement of severe overacting, as every time they issue forth from the lips of the "creatures of the night," the actors in question rather drop the pretense of grace and allure the vampiric condition generally entails. (I assume that less favorable side of the cast's portrayals is owed less to a deficiency of ability, and more to guidance from director Charlie Steeds.) Though it's actually written into the screenplay as a plot point, and not just a needless tawdry addition, there's egregious homophobia incorporated into one particular scene, and some dialogue otherwise. And maybe worst of all: while the narrative is solid as it is, and realized fairly well in this feature, the brusque and heavy-handed execution unquestionably dampens the impact of what this screenplay could have been.

The difficult presentation of homophobia is no accident, as 'Vampire virus' lightly touches on themes of queerness, and relates vampirism as it appears here - and broad cultural reaction to it - to the struggle of the LGBTQ community. Beyond that, there are hefty emotional beats and character drama that don't go unnoticed, but they're glossed over with the same swift, uncaring hand that colors the picture at large with a straightforward inattentiveness. For that matter, violence and sexuality are a staple of the genre, but even these elements aren't brought to their utmost fruition. I don't know if these shortcomings are reflection of an incapability or unwillingness on the part of the director or writers to more fully explore the vaguely rendered gravity at the core of the film, or if they simply didn't have the budget to expand their horizons. Whatever the case may be, the final product suffers for that lack. If the more ponderous aspects of the screenplay had been probed more, this would have been boosted substantially. Alas.

I maintain, however - despite all the flaws, gawkiness, and possibly poor judgment - that 'Vampire virus' is actually a good movie, and more than it has any right to be. I yearn for an opportunity for someone to bring out the full potential of the story concept, and the screenplay - yet even with that extra wistfulness in mind, I like this. My expectations weren't very high as I began watching, and those presumptions have been defied. This has all the issues one would assume of a contemporary low-budget genre film, yet despite those limitations, it still manages quite ably, if imperfectly, to tell a great if marginally incomplete story.

I don't begrudge anyone who engages earnestly with this and finds it unsatisfactory. No one is more amazed than I am that I walk away actually pleased with the viewing experience. All I can say is that if you're open to the wide variety of tales that can be told within the realm of horror, and able to recognize value while willing to abide faults - well, I think that just makes you a well-rounded moviegoer. And in that vein, much to my pleasant surprise, I happily recommend 'Vampire virus' as an imprecise but highly enjoyable vampire flick that rouses the imagination.
