Good episode, some problems
arneshsengupta25 May 2020
I said this in my main series review too but Rachel need to go. By far the most disinteresting and unlikeable character in the series and every time the plot switches to her it the pace is lost and so is my interest. Dana has been great for the last few episodes as the streamer and still wasn't bad but the conflict at the end felt a little forced, not too much of a problem though.

I love Brad and Jo, Brad has been consistently interesting and funny throughout and Jo has been super funny the last few episodes, this one was no exception. The two together are very funny too. David has been increasingly funny the last couple of episodes too, a very Toby from the Office vibe.

The main plot with Ian and Poppy was fine, not too interesting, and the twist was okay. Interesting enough to hold your attention and the actors do well but the conflict doesn't feel too pressing or interesting. Still, it's definitely very watchable and there are many great performances. Megan Ganz's writing is great this episode. Even previously annoying CW has a funny moment.

In summary, plot could have been a bit more interesting but a good episode nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars.

Great fun. The story dives deep into Grimm and his personal life. Still fun humor.

The plots, acting, humour and callbacks were really well done here. Also the reveal was great and makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. So yeah very good episode.

Best episode yet of a really funny smart show

Warning: Spoilers
The scene with Shannon and Poppi was amazing. Shannon was a scene stealer but poppi played off of her crazy yet relevant revelations. Then the actual Brenden revelation. Good stuff here. The kid is really unlivable and well played. I really like this show!

Warning: Spoilers
This honestly was a mixed bag. The twist was kinda interesting as well as some great scenes with the testers, whom I think are the best characters in the series overall. Brad, CW, Jo, and especially David all are incredibly entertaining and likable as characters (maybe not Jo but still, she's funny). But apart from that, that's about it.

The main plot with Ian and Poppy was ok-ish. The gist is that Ian goes off to meet Pootie Shoe, which turns out to be his son. However, he doesn't want to talk to Ian at all and ends up storming out of the diner. I thought that set up was interesting, but the actual conversation that we end up with is the exact opposite and even sets up Pootie Shoe as unlikeable. Ian is a character that is definitely full of himself, but during that conversation, you can tell that Ian definitely wants to patch things up and is even genuinely remorseful of unmasking him. Sadly Brendan doesn't want to hear any of it and even makes a joke about his rating system, killing the mood entirely.

And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. Ian exits towards Poppy, who has just talked with his ex. She is done with being "an emotional support animal" and mentions that she is going to his rival. Ian's response is "If that's what you wanna do, I can't stop you." which I thought was pretty refreshing since I expected him to make a narcissistic response but his response makes him more likeable in my opinion. Poppy then tells him to get in the car since she has decided to drive, which could have been a good end to the scene. But nope, she then spots a dog that she was referring to earlier as a example of being an emotional support animal, which felt tonally inconsistent with the dramatic tone the scene was going for. After her rant, Ian then makes a comment about her hair; not only is it not funny at all, but it further ruins the tone and it even felt out of character compared to earlier.

Long story short, they drive back, Poppy makes a call to Cold Alliance, accepting the job, but Dan Williams (played by Bender himself, John DiMaggio) has changed his mind due to her acting crazy and constantly changing her mind over the job during the episode. He hangs up on a shocked Poppy, Ian leaves, and Poppy screams as the episode ends.

Now onto the "Cold Alliance" plot point. Now Poppy leaving to work for them could have been an interesting plot point and could have gone in new directions. Maybe Poppy could have started work over there, only to find out that the "friendly" company was built upon other people who have thrown under the bus in order to create the perfect gaming company (Amy Hennig being "fired" from Naughty Dog). Maybe Cold Alliance II (the game that Cold Alliance is working on) could have been revealed as "woke" and pandering specifically to SJW's (inspired by Last of Us 2 Leaks). Maybe they could have focused on the "crunch time" that is now notorious in gaming companies nowadays being present in Cold Alliance. There are more directions that this plotline could have gone and honestly, those would have make the show feel more realistic and relatable, especially nowadays.

Even Ian himself should have changed even more after this episode but it felt like he didn't.

In conclusion, even though I love the series and I think alongside Defending Jacob, that this is the best series on Apple TV+, this is definitely the worst episode in my opinion and could have been a LOT better.

Warning: Spoilers
Not quite the build-up to the finale I was hoping for as they killed any drama with Poppy and her career trajectory, but it was still fairly funny. This show almost never disappoints episode to episode.
