Episode 6, "The Scavengers," begins in snow covered mountain country, where Johnny Yuma encounters a small band of scavengers, so named from his time fighting the Civil War, human vultures who feed off both the living and the dead. Their leader calls himself Suee (James Westerfield), claiming to be the son of a Sioux princess, and is accompanied by the younger Cabe (Richard Harunian, later seen in "The Promise"), the injured Ezel (Richard Evans), suffering from hands painfully swollen from wasp stings (in the wintertime?), and an unnamed old man (James Bell) who is actually Ezel's father, heartbroken since his wife's death. After he foils their attempt to rob him of his coat, Johnny ventures ahead to the home of Tom (Ben Wright), who was injured protecting his family against the marauders. Daughters Kate (Jody Lawrance, later seen in "The Earl of Durango") and Jeannie (Olive Sturgess, later seen in "The Pit"), recovering from an attack by Cabe, welcome Ezel into the house, ministering to his wounds because he was the only one that came to her rescue. In the meantime, Johnny fortifies a plan to expose Suee as the coward he knows him to be, no different than the ones he'd met during the war. James Westerfield will be familiar to anyone who grew up on Disney titles such as "The Shaggy Dog," while the still active Richard Evans will always be remembered for his heroic role in the STAR TREK episode "Patterns of Force."
