"Smog Alert" features the second and last appearance of June Gable's Puerto Rican Det. Maria Battista (previously seen in "Noninvolvement"), who arrests a graffiti artist (Alan Haufrect) that scribbles his obscenities on ladies room walls. New York reports a first stage smog alert, so serious that Fish arrives for work out of breath ("it's just the smog, I swallowed a piece!"). Lee Kessler (later seen in "Graveyard Shift") plays suicidal Renee Pettit, who gets talked out of jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge by Fish, who promptly fainted from the smog, and gets misplaced on his way to the hospital. Ron Carey's third appearance as Levitt finds the 5'6 uniform complaining about the 5'2 Battista making detective over him (too bad she never appeared again, she made a fine contrast). Wojo is upset about the thickness of the smog, making it difficult for him to see what he's typing without tearing (Yemana: "there's one good thing about being Oriental, we don't expose a lotta eye!").
