He lost a professorship to a Kubist. She tries to cheer him up. There is *a* moment, but still no more talk. At the Health Center, Danny misses Carrie, who is on a trip (nooooo! No Jennifer Milmore in this episode!). One of the discs in Kurt's spine ruptures and he's hospitalized. Luckily for Jesse, Kurt's doctor, Jeff, shows interest in her. Unluckily for Kurt, his nurse, Rosemary (a pre-'Alias' Merrin Dungey), is his old nemesis from nursing school. Jeff asks Jesse out, but Jesse says she's "expecting to be involved with someone". Upon returning home, Jesse gets good news from Linda: Irma is packing! But it's not because she's returning to Chile, it's because Diego and Irma are going to Niagara Falls for the weekend...

Diego had mentioned a university cocktail party to Jesse, who assumed it an invitation to be his plus-one. However, at Diego's place, Jesse finds that Diego already has a date: the sexy student, Gwen (the apparently ageless Pauley Perrette, cf. NCIS, 10 years later), whom Diego has been seeing a while (since #1.12). Jesse goes nuts and starts to live an imaginary life according to the examples in the film noir marathon on TV... A life where Diego is a private eye and Jesse is a femme fatale. A life where someone kills Gwen in the first scene. Sad, but at least we see that Pauley Perrette has amazing legs.

Jesse is hosting a movie night at her place, with Carrie, Danny, Diego, Kurt and Linda invited. Danny's pick, 'Last Tango in Paris', does not generate much excitement. Linda's pick, 'Ouch!, where people get hit by stuff, does not get the thumbs up either. Jesse asks for a comedy, and Diego has one - until he is told that 'Midnight Express' is not the same movie as 'Midnight Run'. This leaves Kurt's pick, 'The Sound of Music'. During the movie, Danny reveals that he played Rolf at the a singing camp. Diego reveals he would like to have seven kids and Jesse gets anxiety. Cue flashback to late 1980s when Jesse was on the ninth month pregnant, expecting Little John, but still adamant at seeing Guns n' Roses live. And fashion sense was dead.
