When too much is not enough

Although Director Beresford appears to have disowned this film, it's a suspenseful thriller with an array of unique characters and a climax to rival 'The Wild Bunch' when a brazen heist goes awry. Terry Donovan stars as an embittered former racing driver whose mundane job as a security firm supervisor leads him to gamble on a risky retirement plan.

Brutal and uncompromising, MM is the type of gritty Ozploitation that contemporaneously no one went to see, but which has since enjoyed renewed interest to become a cult favourite.

It's packed full of Oz talent with former 'Skippy' duo Ed Devereaux & Tony Bonner as the wily ex-copper and his youthful sidekick with a secret, young Bryan Brown features in an early film role as Donovan's mouthy sibling, Alan Cassell as a crooked cop, Lucky Grills, Hu Pryce (shares an implied subtext with Donovan's character that explains his actions at the climax), Carol Raymond and don't neglect burly Max Fairchild brandishing a pair of bolt cutters - ouch that scene is hard to watch. Topping it off with Bud Tingwell as a sadistic villain (!) makes for plenty of against-type characterisations to keep the familiar viewer curious.

There's a bit of drag in the second act when the elaborate plot is being established, but the witty dialogue and eventual tense climax makes it all worthwhile. Not for the squeamish, and definitely not your average heist film.
