Barely Survives as a Movie Due To the Saving Graces of the Screenwriter
13 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A rather awkward rom-com that has one important, primary feature - could have been so much worse. This is a watchable movie that almost falls flat at every turn, except for somehow the desperate actions of the relatively experienced screenwriter who barely saves the movie by her uncanny ability to tie up every glaring loose end that she gets her characters into including for example the federal agent's observation of a piece of jewelry being snatched. The movie stumbles about as the prince and a small-time criminal switch places and the comedy ensues. A slow moving movie with the unnecessary inclusion of a secondary relational subplot and under develops the criminal's role. More unfortunately the action climax of the movie is lame without the Prince getting more of the action. Overall, this rom com survives on the merits and wits of the writer, one of the few instances that the writer possessed the ability to catch each of her potentially lethal errors and saved the script. Watching the movie just for each amazing save is sufficient to watch this movie one time. Writer Joany Kane made more work for herself than she needed to in order to make a decent entertaining movie. If not for her ability to spot her own weaknesses this movie would have been a 3 or 4 at most.
