I feel that it's basically like if they took the old Tales From The Crypt show formula and tried to bring it back for today's audience. And like all things they try to bring back because of nostalgia or that, it is never as good or entertaining as it once was. American Horror Stories is a series in which each episode is its own little short story kind of thing, which no plot connections to other episodes. The epsiodes are basically hit or miss. Some episodes have a good entertaining story, some not so much. Don't go into it expecting A+ acting from these people. Sure there are a couple big name actors/actresses, but most everyone are people with little experience.
